The established Hulk/Bruce Banner isn't really all that likable a character. He's a superhero who's trying to cure himself of being a superhero. That's why people liked the Avengers version best. They based him on the David Banner character from the '70s TV show. In that show, Banner was always trying to help someone else despite his Hulk problem. Prior to that, Banner only seemed interested in helping himself. I know it may take away from the "inherent tragedy" of the character, but there's only so much tragedy a superhero character can have before people just want them to act like an honest-to-goodness hero.
