I had thus far in my life avoided trying to copy Darwyn Cooke’s art. He is one of my favorite creators, so much so that the possibility of discovering I couldn’t ape him well was one of my greatest fears, like disappointing one’s own father. I did my best.
Anyway, I’m pretty sure Jim Balent’s fetish is watermelons.

I would read that.
For all we know, Willis is planning to write his version of Catwoman as a new webcomic, which could generate enough extra income to renovate his place.
Maybe DC will let him licence it. He could include Nightwing to appeal to the female demographic too.
And Nightwing could be gay to appeal to the yaoi crowd.
A gay character in a David Willis comic? And you really think DC would gay up a character that’s been straight from the beginning (fan jokes aside)?
This sarcasm brought to you by seeing Rifftrax last night and it still being fresh in my mind.
blasted dc and their turning the golden age GL gay……:Sighs:
No, they didn’t make the Golden Age Green Lantern gay.
They murdered him off-panel when his entire universe was wiped from existence, then replaced him with an entirely new character that shares a name and power set – who just so happens to be gay.
No, I’m not kidding. This is the way Crisis on Infinite Earths portrayed having your universe deconstructed – as a terrifying wave of whiteness eliminating you entirely from existence. The Alan Scott who married Molly Mayne has now been dead for over a year.
And he could include Stephanie Brown to appeal to –
Aw, who am I kidding? He couldn’t include Stephanie Brown.
I, for one, welcome this vision of the character.
Will you be adding any ‘homemade’ Catwoman art in your site anytime soon? HMMMMMMMM?
I have one kicking around DA, I think, but it’s more like a cross between Arkham City and Animated Catwoman.
That’s…
…a really good idea.
I’d donate to that.
I’m just remembering the weird glitch where criminals catwoman taunts go off for nightwing in Arkham City.
Catwoman: Villains In Disguise.
That’s a pretty damn good Darwyn Cooke.
I was almost sure it was a cut/paste he inked over.
No, that would be imitating Greg Land, not Darwyn Cooke.
And Land’s fetish is old sports Illustrated swimsuit issues and Victoria’s Secret catalogs.
That is a very good Darwyn Cooke.
Willis’s kink is Marigold in a cat costume?
Just as long as Momo gets play the part of Harlequin.
Harlequin? Harlequin? NNNNNGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
Well, the cat costume is kind of a given.
Did you also notice the glasses? ^_~
“Also Batman is so cool!”
NEXT WEEK: WALL-E gloats after beating OPTIMUS PRIME to the Robot Hall of Fame.
Still not as funny as when you realised your Catwoman would make jokes about Batman. XD
Maybe she’d find him cute in a love to tease you kind of way.
I knew it.
Can you even imagine Willis writing for DC? I think his criticisms of company policies would make him inappropriate there.
It would make him perfect.
Yeah, they could use a bit of that right about now.
How I imagine it going is, Willis gets control of some book, introduces or reinvents strong, independent women with real character depth and believable motivations, then Frank Miller demands to take over the book and turns them all into prostitutes.
Willis’ run on a DC book would last exactly as long as it took people to make it known that they liked it.
And then DiDio would send Willis a letter on his special “Fans? Who care what the fans like? Fuck ‘em!” letterhead, announcing that he was being replaced by Scott Lobdell.
So what would Lobdell’s Catwoman be?
Ursula Kitt?
Fetish for the “glamour” of Hollywood?
Willis, Ginger Toms?
So your Catwoman not only loves Batman, but also wears glasses, has messy hair, and likes Transformers?
So your saying your fetish is…you?
Opposite Sex Clone
I married one of those, actually.
I wonder if there is a trope for that.
Opposite Sex Clone…There’s a trope for that. There’s a trope for pretty much anything.
I was refering to the possible existence of a trope where you hitch up to your OSC.
I would imagine it is, though it may not codified. The existence of a trope is not dependent on people realizing that the trope exists.
I’m more concerned with the Rule 34 of it…just sounds…actually, rather tame compared to other Rule 34 implementations I’ve heard.
Forget I said anything.
Its called rule 63.
Rule 63 is the OSC, I’m wondering what the trope where a person gets with their OSC is called.
Screw Yourself.
Thank you! ^_^
First time I’ve ever been thanked for telling someone that.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BirdsOfAFeather ?
Don’t forget that she’s also wearing orange.
Am I the only one who thought Velma?
I thought about just drawing Velma on the cover and calling it a day, but figgered that’s more for my Tumblr audience.
I’m glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I got to the Christopher Nolan panel…
butts disease
He likes big butts disease and he can not lie.
You other brothers can’t deny.
Decided to leave out Adam Hughes (Audrey Hepburn) eh?
Yeah, I liked the Nolan panel better.
No argument here!
The tags for this comic kinda make it sound like the best crossover ever.
I feel like I could put “batman returns, catwoman, christopher nolan, cillian murphy, darwyn cooke, david mazzucchelli, david willis, frank miller, joe, michelle pfeiffer, robin, tfwiki, tim burton, ultra car” into a Random Screenplay Generator (They exist! Michael Bay puts “boobs, explosions, sunset” into his!) and get something that would outgross The Avengers.
I’m pretty sure everyone’s kink is Cillian Murphy.
this is distinctly possible
Yeah. I mean, have you SEEN his eyes?
His LIPS!
Mmm. Cillian Murphy…
Yesssss.
Pass. I just don’t do androgynous.
My Catwoman would be an artist who’s pretty laid back and likes junk food.
…I don’t think I would call Nolan’s Catwoman asexual…
Me neither. Anne Hathaway isn’t exactly my first choice for Catwoman, but I thought she played the character’s seductive traits pretty high when it was called for.
Hathaway catwoman reminds me a lot of Julie Newmar, on the physical.
I loved how much her costume borrowed from the Newmar look with updated materials to make a fairly legitimate looking cat burglar outfit.
Because cat-burglars all need stiletto heels and long, exposed hair. Totes legit.
(It’s a gorgeous costume, though.)
In her case, it did seem that the stiletto heels were, for all intents and purposes, actual stilettos…
That’s why I called it “fairly,” as opposed to “completely” legitimate.
Wow, yanno what, I can’t believe I never thought about it during the movie. Might have something to do with it being forever since I watched the old show, but whatever, it worked.
Yeah, calling Nolan’s Catwoman asexual makes no sense. I consider her the sexiest of the four examples mentioned.
How much of that was Anne Hathaway acting, though? There was not a lot of Sexuality in the script, I thought.
Did you not notice the costume?
A costume is just a thing. If I put a morbidly obese gentleman in that garment, it would probably not have the same impact at all.
You can’t deny, though, that it would make quite an impact.
Do not want. DO NOT WANT.
You brought it up! Anyway, the costume was made for and worn by Anne Hathaway, so your point is irrelevant.
You brought it up!
Seriously, she did convince a politician to abandon his job and his family, making everyone think he had been kidnapped or killed, when in fact he just couldn’t resist being dominated by a random twenty-something in a dress.
Well, it was a Gotham politician, so it couldn’t have been that hard to do.
Yes and no. She used sex/sex appeal/being girly as a tactic in combat and for social manipulation with no trouble, but seemed to take a purely pragmatic approach to doing so. In terms of her character motivations and plot arc, sexuality and romance had very little to do with her actual character – as opposed to other Catwomen who have been mostly defined by their attraction to Batman, over-the-top flirting/sexuality for *no* pragmatic purpose, etc.
She turns good because she decides she likes Bruce and presumably spends the next part of her life with him. I think she has put MORE importance into the romance than any previous Catwoman we’ve ever seen…
That’s not my impression of the character at all – by the time we meet her, she’s not ‘bad’ anymore anyway, she’s just forced to do some bad stuff in order to escape her past. She already wanted to leave her criminal life behind before we even met her, Bruce just gave her the ability to do so.
She was not a good person at ALL at the start of the movie. She kidnapped people, stole freely (including sentimental things instead of just valuable ones), hit crippled people, and murdered to make good her escape. Once she found an ally, she turned on him at the drop of a hat and only somewhat felt bad about it. The combo of those feelings and seeing the city go downhill made her into a much more moral person who would help the city and not just herself.
So Christopher Nolan’s fetish is asexual women who use sex appeal to manipulate people.
That creepy fetish seems to be common.
I agree. She’s generally attractive and in respects to orientation I’m pretty sure she was bi (if the girl she was with was her girlfriend like I think it was((they did seem really close and they did move into a house together, but that could be because they’re sisters I suppose))).
considered catwoman at times is defined by the writers and artists by her sexyness…
sad but true
Wonder if Willis is gonna put off the next storyline long enough to do a TP:TG strip.
I love Darwyn Cooke–he’s the reason I started buying Jonah Hex! And you did a great job aping his style, Willis!
Jim Balent? Nah, too easy.
Joe is a Batman fan?
It’s weird to me that you’re considering not making Joe a closet nerd over in DOA to avoid cast overlap and now that Joe is a Shortpacked! semi-regular you used him to set up a Batman joke. Robin could’ve been talking to Ethan on the phone or on Skype or something. It just…I dunno. It feels wrong, somehow.
More mystifying though is that Robin apparently also moved to Denver and yet is still in the banner, which perhaps is an indicator of how long this couple’s gonna last.
I think that somebody mentioned before that Robin’s super speed kinda makes a long-distance relationship a non-issue.
Also, her car flies.
Wait, doesn’t everybody’s car fly? I thought ultracars were a dime a dozen now.
Zoomers don’t fly. Only Ultra Car does.
(Ultra Car is in the first panel only to set up how Robin is there.)
“Joe is a Batman fan?” Whose poster did you think it was? And he clearly reads comic books.
Yep… now if Darwyn Cooke was not such a huge obnoxious assclown as a human being, which completely ruined any and all enjoyment of his art for me.
Okay, I get most of it, but why the orange suit?
It makes her a Catwoman.
I assumed it’s supposed to be the toy-plastic orange (‘neon’) that the various strawmen always complain about.
I thought it was to match with Catman, who Willis has all the love for?
That’s what I was thinking
‘cuz orange gets him off. All of Willis’ dreams either involve orange creamsicles or e-hobby Sunstorm.
/googles for “Darwyn Cooke catwoman”/
Hmm, that is some pretty fine lineart right there, and not even what you could call exploitative.
/googles for “Jim Balent catwoman”/
HAHAHA oh wow. That’s just dumb.
I think his fetish is body paint…
And water balloons attached over where women’s breasts should be. Those things do NOT behave like actual boobs.
You know, that might actually be a pretty smart tactic for a somewhat flat-chested female crimefighter. I know that if I grabbed a heroine from behind, and suddenly her boobs *popped* and drenched my hands with water, I’d probably freak out and ease up long enough for her to deck me.
If your first step to neutralize an enemy is to grab his/her boobs from behind I don’t think you’ll be a dangerous foe anyway.
Someone’s gotta pitch that character. Granted, she’d have to wear an actual top to hide it, but if it’s otherwise skin-tight we could get away with it.
Maybe she has water powers and can maintain the illusion or something.
My god, he stayed true to his word! BUTTS!
Is this a subtle hint to Maggie, in what you’d like her to wear for Halloween?
If so, you should have made it a little bit earlier. Kind of short notice. And it’d have to be a custom job, since the only adult orange cat costume I found online was a unisex Garfield.
But hey, if that hits all your fetish buttons, who are we to judge?
There’s this perception that Nolan’s movies are asexual and unromantic. And that’s true in the sense of romance often being the problem or whatever. But untrue in the sense that most of them REVOLVE around romance and lovelovelove and so on in ways that other movies do not. I mean:
-Following: Dude is tricked by femme fatale, nearly escapes his fate because she has feelings for him too.
-Prestige: Rivalry to the death starts because of death of a lady, Scarlett mucks up both their plans, and the one guy’s wife nearly undoes his greatest trick many times.
-Memento: Wanting to help that lady is the only (somewhat) unselfish thing Guy Pearce manages. The reason he wants to help her is sexy times.
-Batman Begins: Rachel defines Bruce’s mission and rules for him and makes him care enough to survive the battle at the end.
-TDK: Bruce wants to quit over Rachel, her death drives Harvey over the deep end and Bruce into early retirement.
-TDKR: Bruce thinks about quitting for his CEO lady and actually does it, taking a relationship with Catwoman as a nice perk to the whole deal. He gives her a new, clean past almost ENTIRELY based on sexy times.
-Inception: The whole point of the movie is a romance…
-Insomnia: It is a twisted sort of love that makes Robin Williams evil.
Yeah, that’s all of ‘em. People need to stop saying that, seriously.
I dunno, the sexuality feels pretty surface-level – ascetic, maybe. I think the asexual descriptor is more about how the sexuality in Nolan’s movies is kinda Not Very Sexual. It’s all present narratively, in that people like other people and so on, but not aesthetically or dynamically what have you.
I mean, Prestige and Following (if I remember the latter right) have decent “dynamic” love scenes. And by that I mean, sexy times. And TDKR had that whole fireplace bit.
I just read through the archive and I’m hooked. Thank you, Willis, for allowing me to read this completely free of charge, for it is excellent.
Now there are three or four other Willis archives to read through. GOOD LUCK.
It’s only fifteen years of binging! And the alternate universe of Dumbing of Age. But think about all the jokes you’ll get!
Seriously, reading it after the full archive binge is a completely different experience.
Hmmm, which is a longer binge, Walkyverse or Homestuck?
Back when Gail Simone was doing her column at CBR (“You’ll All Be Sorry!”), she did one that was a bunch of fake product announcements, one of which was “Jim Balent’s Broadsword Comics announces ‘Boobula and the Titulons.’”
That title now pops into my head unbidden whenever I get to the Broadsword page in Previews.
Oh, I thought that was a Futurama episode title.
The really sad thing is that the only reason that’s a parody is that Balent didn’t actually think of it first.
what kink was the long purple dress?
Hard to say, since isn’t the purple costume a throwback to a costume Catwoman had back when inking technology wasn’t so good & Batman had to wear a blue costume?
So, maybe its a nostalgia fetish. If it was good enough back then, its good enough now.
What’s Bruce Timm’s fetish? Sameface?
Animal rights?
You thought Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman was asexual? I thought she was super-sexy. Maybe red lipstick? She had the best lipstick.
She’s the only Catwoman in a while who didn’t basically give up her lifestyle and personality because she fell in love with Batman (she was already trying to get out of her life of crime when we met her).
And of course, since Robyn is reading, she’s “doing nothing” and should be interrupted.
So your fetish is…for Maggie?
the devil you say
Some black stripes on the back and that’s a Sexy Garfield costume.
UNFORTUNATE IMPLICATIONS
Robin is doing a Derpy Hooves imprression!
What was the fetish of William Dozier (producer of the 60′s Batman series)?
Julie Newmar.
But that’s hardly unusual.
That and purrrrfect puns.
Cosplay.
I approve this catwoman.
…so is it bad that I wrote a Catwoman fanfic whose first words are “I love to see men die”?
I think you did a good job on the Cooke Selena.
