Jazz: Squid
I’m okay with this.
I like (from the link, not the comic) that ChromeDome’s alt mode is officially a “Car”
I noticed that just after “Race car” turns into Blurr… XD
and crosshairs turns into a truck but… that is a truck? I’d believe it’s a squid first
also I suppose DW also noticed that in the orginal cartoon aired from 1984-1987 as stated at the beginning of the photo gold bug turned into a 1994 volkswagon beetle.. this was a bit before the new beetle was introduced.
The point and you have missed.
all Transformers but Jazz: vehicles
Jazz: Squid
other transformers: buuuuurn
Except for Rampage whose like “What I’m a vehicle” only in his crazy way.
So is this website run by a bunch of Grandmas? They never seemed to get Transformers right…
Tformers.. The special ed class of the TF community.
So, which one transforms into the short bus?
And does it come with a helmet?
I would totally buy a 1969 Chevorlet Camero if it could become a immortal alien cannibal crabtank robot.
Oh my Primus, the PICTURE THEY USED FOR RODIMUS PRIME!!!!!
And, I didn’t know G1 Blurr’s altmode was Animated Blurr
And what the fuck is Wheelie’s alt mode pic from?
Fanart of “Wheelimus Prime.” There’s a looooot of stolen fanart. Something I thought about duplicating in my parody, but… well, I’d have to actually steal some, ‘cuz I didn’t have time to ask.
Well, that makes sense. But when did Rodimus turn into an Armada Prime recolor?
Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out which ‘mechs in the 1991 Solaris VII box correspond to the ‘mechs in the Studio Nue redesigns of the Unseen for the Japanese edition of Battletech from the same era.
Koto = Locust (Obviously)
Tsunami = Stinger
Morpheus = Wasp
Colossus = Marauder
Now I have to wonder why you bought it up here…
I knew those, but I was looking for the other eight.
My old sight-not-seen (you know what I almost typed!) list:
Mantis = ShadowHawk
Longshot = Griffin
Daedalus = Phoenix Hawk
Ronin = Thunderbolt
Paladin = Rifleman
Onslaught = Warhammer
Cudgel = Archer
Juggernaut = BattleMaster
Now, I have a lot of doubts as to how right this is.
Not at all. Those designs were ones created by FASA artists – probably Jeff Launbenstein – for the S7 boxed set, rather than being based off existing artwork.
This page has all the known JBT mech designs. As you can see, the other S7 mechs aren’t amongst them.
Pity, as I wish they’d used the Big Aztec Battlemaster.
I’m having trouble with the Paladin=Rifleman equation.
Richard Deiner (hope I spelled that right) as Paladin in the radio show “Have Gun, Will Travel” equating Chuck Conners in the TV program “The Rifleman” just boggles the mind. Even if they were both Westerns.
Oh wait, we were talking ROBOTS. My bad.
Yeah, my friend showed me that a few days ago and I was laughing at how utterly dismal their “research” was, if it can even be called that.
I was trying to figure out how this would be funnier than the original infographic. The Jazz=Squid did it.
Oh god…the original…the styles clash! THE STYLES CLASH!
…you wrestling fans go ahead and make your own joke here. But no, really, it’s HORRENDOUS how the styles are inconsistent. WHAT THE HELL?
When I saw that the other day, I was noticing all the goddamned discrepancies, like using fanart or Optimus’ art for Rodimus. It just annoyed me because they obviously had SOME knowledge of the characters, but just how they got so much wrong…
I’m not sure how that even happened.
What’s really sad is that an accurate graphic would be kinda cool.
Hilariously, your’s is STILL more realistically accurate!
I wish I had a Rampage. Just need him and I’ll have all the Transmetals from the show.
It took me a while. I get it now. I lulled.
That’s nothing. I becalmed.
*golf clap*
That’s not True Jazz doesn’t turn into a squid! He was a Porsche 935. I know that because Squids don’t come with a huge spoiler! Or leather seats!
On the other hand, if I knew that Camaros looked like giant robot scorpions I’d have bought one of those sons’abitches back in ’95. I thought Camaros looked like an uglier Firebird Trans-Am, so I bought a stupid Contour instead.
Oh well.
Live and learn.
You’ve been riding the wrong squids.
A squid once told me the end of Deathly Hallows. Don’t tell me they don’t come with a huge spoiler.
An Oddly Related Sentiment From Medium Large.
Having not heard of the Transformers thing, I actually thought you were trolling Graph Jam. Then again, it’s not like it doesn’t troll itself with great regularity.
I think what I found most amusing are the little touches. Like Bumblebee clearly being Goldbug. I would have chalked that up to “meh” if they didn’t have Goldbug further down. And G1 Prime’s alt-mode being a longnose? Someone must pay for that dishonor. Prime was a cab-over! And of course, all the generic “car, truck” type alt-modes. What, they couldn’t make something up like they did with Prime’s alt-mode? And you include Pipes and leave out Huffer? Come on, Pipes is a freaking Huffer redeco. And you’ll notice, they identify Pipes as a CAB-OVER.
…
Uh, I think I may have issues.
So … why did the cybertonians have vehicles in the first place?
Faster than walking? I’unno.
I’m pretty sure Bumblebee transformed into the original Type 1 Beetle, not the fugly 1994 version, but I’m just a hungarian semi-fan.
Okay, now I checked the link, and I facepalm at myself. Now I’m officially a trigger-happy new-beetle-hater.
Oh, it’s worse than that… the New Beetle didn’t exist until 1998!
In 1994, it was still called “Concept 1″, a prototype. Still, Goldbug’s creation came before the Concept 1 prototype was announced, much less thought of.
Judging by the rear deck lid on my Goldbug toy, it would have to be a Super Beetle given the shape and number of louvers. Tail light shape makes me think 1972, since anything ’73 and after had the big round lights.
What? I’m a fan of both VW and Transformers… the previous having resurrected my love of the latter.
Yep, VW 1302 (1971-72) on account of the flat windshield.
You would think if they were trying to make a point about brands, they would have stuck to modes they could identify an actual brand for.
Car! Truck! Race car!
holy shit. you can spell ‘camaro’… i had lost all hope since archive digging a few months back.
squid = awesome
TRIVIA TIME!!
Which Beast Wars era character had a squid altmode and is still in my toybox?
Easy; Clawjaw (or one of his Japanese repaints)
Walky, what’s the vehicle mode art for Prime from/of? It looks intriguing.
Marvel US Transformers #…48? It was a flashback issue about the UNDERBASE.
I wouldn’t call Comics Alliance “content starved” myself, as I think they do put up quite a few quality articles on a regular basis.
To be honest, while I think the infographic thing was incredibly shoddy, I’m a bit put out that people seem bothered by something so trivial.
You’re reading Shortpacked!, and you’re confused by people on the Internet commenting on stuff that isn’t really important in the grand scheme of things.
I just jeep giggling at Squid-Jazz. Considering how well sound travels underwater, he might really love that alt-mode!
And the fact that (some types of) squid communicate by flashing bright colours at each other.
Sound and light, baby.
Nah, that would appeal more to his cousin, Breakbeat.
(They really need to do a Jazz redeco named Breakbeat… He’d be a perfect character for a garish G2-style deco.)
A friend of mine sent me the original link, thinking I would be impressed. My laughing began when I saw g1 characters in robot mode with animated vehicle modes… XD
Other than two cars made in 1994, I can’t find anything wrong with the original infographic! I guess you have to have watched transformers as a kid instead of carebears and pound puppies to get the joke.
Part of the context has disappeared, but the graphic was originally labeled as identifying the specific vehicles everyone turned into. So Wheeljack is “1977 Lancia Stratos Turbo” rather than “car,” for instance. But then it starts including descriptions like “pickup truck” and “race car” and eventually just plain old “car.” You might also find it interesting that the two modes are often blatantly in two completely different art styles.
I suppose you would have to have actual Transformers knowledge, though, to realize things like “Prowl is just Bluestreak in different colors, he can’t possibly be a different model car” or “that robot isn’t Rodimus Prime and in fact looks nothing like him” or “U-Haul Robot is an obscure, nameless character, why is he even in this image?”
I was confused about the transformers part but thanks to three men and a guy in a white suit I’m starting to be a bit of a petrolhead so found humour in the amount of car fail I saw.
For starters they got the models for Prowl and Bluestreak right except the Nissan 280ZX was not in production in 1974. Also the Lancia Stratos production ended in the early seventies.
Was Smokescreen also a recolour of Prowl/Bluestreak as they say it’s the Datsun 280ZX which is the Nissan 280ZX as Nissan thought we were still too sour over the war to buy Japanese.
Also the coolness of Kup means he is not a pickup truck he is a ute. (It’s an Australian thing)
Smokescreen is a retool of Bluestreak. And Smokescreen is specifically a Datsun 280ZX, as it’s based on an actual rally car. http://www.a2zracer.com/page84.html
Hey don’t mock U Haul Robot! He was awesome! He was like a father figure for me growing up!
You know, a guy I barely knew that was never around.
(I’m joking, love my dad!)
The pic (in the link) was a fail right from the start… they didn’t even use the actual semi cab (basically a cube with no hood) that Optimus ’84 transformed into! Great find, though.
“Blurr -> Race Car”
Heh, that’s pretty fu–
“Chromedome -> Car”
OH WOW LOL
Now someone needs to make a Jazz custom out of the Claw Jaw mold.
Cars and Trucks? Who knew? I didn’t. Seems like a little more effort could have gone into the original graphic.
I wonder if this was an intentional “error” to drive hits.
Thanls, Andy Kaufman!
The mighty power of Willis helped Dinobot win an election. Think he could get Hasbro to make a Jazz –> Squid toy?
Because I would buy, like, a hundred of them.
I would buy the HELL outta that!
OH god yeah! They don’t make enough beast forms anymore anyway. When are we getting our Beast Wars reboot hollywood?!
Excellent try, but the original misinfographic is still funnier.
Well, not being a Transformers fan, I found it easier to understand the comedy in Willis’ rendition of the joke. So he has a wider audience for his infographic.
I saw that original pic on topless robot and it was posted with serious praise, and proceeded to be torn apart in the comments. I don’t know why everyone who spread this graphic couldn’t tell how retarded it was.
I am grateful to that chart for informing me that Chromedome turns into a car. I would never have realised that on my own!
(Actually, I doubt I’d have remembered what his altmode was since I don’t care about Chromedome.)
The Japanese love Chromedome for some reason.
And apparently Arcee decided to go googly eyed over him when she became a robotic office lady.
Japan: Never allow them to write Transformers fiction. EVER.
But…but…but they make it so hot blooded!!
Now that is a bitchin’ Camaro.
did it run over its neighbor?
I expected one to be labeled “robot”, with the vehicle mode unlabeled. Good stuff, though.
Where is Wheelimus Prime?
Just got done reading the entire archives collection..
Wow, this comic is pretty sweet!
Just bought a Claw Jaw to repaint into Jazz. If anyone else wants to, they’re on eBay for pretty cheap.
TO THE EBAYS! *gallops into the sunset*
Seriously, pics or it didn’t happen!
eBay’s not that hard to search. Why would he need to give a pic for a hint on a searchable buying shot.
I’ve heard that even the ‘real’ official line for various trucks Optimus has been has been pretty wrong.. also, I laughed.
I was looking through it and not really seeing what was wrong (aside from the generic “car” an such for transformers that didn’t have a real world analogy) until down near the bottom with Goldbug. My first thought was “huh, don’t remember him when I was growing up” then I saw the transformation…1994 vw beetle. Then I looked back up at the top at the “original transformers cartoon that aired between 1984 and 1987″. Then I realized that obviously someone writing the show had a time machine so it was ok
Audience-specific jokes are what lose you readers. =/
Audience-specific jokes are what make the Penny Arcade guys millions of dollars.
Zing.
Pssst. They’re not funny either.
it’ looked legit till cliff jumper that’s when i realized the joke
Ya know, it’s the iStock photo I had the most problem with. Jazz could very well be a squid if he wanted to. It might not be particularly practical, possible. A photo is just….
I’m no car expert so even following the link the context is lost on me…but I DO know that the original 80′s Optimus truck had a boxy cab, not a long nosed one that wasn’t introduced until the 2000′s. So if they made THAT mistake I doubt I can accept anything else they said.
