I was just about to open with something about how all of Sideswipe‘s toys seem to be pretty awesome, but then I remembered the Human Alliance version. Clearly my intended assertion is not true. But still, a pretty good percentage of movie Sideswipe toys are pretty awesome! I really liked the Revenge of the Fallen Deluxe Class toy, I don’t own Sidearm Sideswipe, but I hear he’s pretty good, and I like this new Dark of the Moon version of Sideswipe as well.
One of the reasons I picked him up is that he’s in a new body this go-round. Well, his robot mode might not be any different, but now he’s (as I understand) the actual production version of the new Corvette Stingray, rather than just the concept. And he’s a convertible! The convertibleness is probably one of the reasons why I’m so smitten with this new form. Since he’s got no roof, he’s got something approximating a detailed interior. He’s got seats, a dashboard, a steering wheel… all really cool things that add visual interest. Not many Transformers cars are convertibles.
What Sideswipe doesn’t have, though, are floorboards. You can look right through him from the top, peeking at the ground in between his seats. He’s a Flintstones car! This tickles me.
Unlike the previous movie Sideswipes, this one doesn’t have a silver paint job. That’s kind of disappointing. Instead, he’s a flat matte French gray-ish thing. Not a dealbreaker, but it’s something he’s lost from his older iterations.
Sideswipe is known for his giant arm-mounted blades. You know, the ones with which he cut Sideways in two! Poor Sideways. And because two arm-mounted blades that can easily bisect any Decepticon just isn’t enough, his MechTech cannon also auto-converts into yet another blade that he can carry around in his hand.
That’s kind of overkill, Sideswipe.

The weird thing is I realized recently that I actually love Sideswipe but wasn’t conscious of it: It really just sort of crept up on me. I was meh on his movie appearance, but went ahead and got his deluxe toy. And really liked it.
Then I spotted his human alliance toy, and bought that. With a little minor modding, I got it to a pretty good place.
Then I saw his new deluxe toy, Side arm sideswipe, and I was like “Oh hell yeah! He’s a gun fu guy now!” and it was mine.
And while I haven’t bought it yet, Top Freedom Sideswipe will be mine. And suddenly I realize I’ve become obsessed with owning all the major variants of this guy, even though in the movie he’s a non starter.
doesn’t bother me though. I can make stuff up for him. To me he’s got the attitude of a soccer fan and in my toy multiverse he hangs out with drift, but they orbit each other wearily because they know they are going to one day have to have it out for title of best autobot swords man. And while people think he would be into Animated Arcee, he’s actually not interested in lady bots, if you catch my meaning.
I can assure you that this is just a convertible version of the existing Stingray concept car. It is not a “regular production version”, nor will it be mass-produced…it’s still just a concept car. But it’s a damned cool concept. =8^)
It’s definitely not the same as the previous concept version. The headlights are relocated, for example.
Ah, good eye! The few small pics I had seen didn’t bear out the differences. Looks like Tom (Peters) and his crew at the design center played around with the basic design, sprucing up a few things. =8^)
Suddenly I want a Flintstones Crossover Toy…
I believe you have the feet wrong, unless it was for some reason…
Let’s translate that Cybertronian…
“Eat this, Drift”
Never did end up getting any of Sideswipes toys, though I had planned on it. If you think so highly of them, then perhaps I’ll end up getting this one. I do like how the arm blades look on this one (better than the previous ones, I mean). Unless the Human Alliance one is stands out as the best. Is this true?
I also am a fan of the general sexiness of Sideswipe’s toys. (sans HA) I really hate the gray on the Dotm dlx as opposed to his usual silver. Hopefully we’ll get a cool repaint. I have to recommend the sidearm mold, it’s one of those molds that’s fun to transform back and forth, everything locks into place & he doesnt fall over! There is going to be a racecar redeco later on in the Dotm line. I think it’s a walmart exclusive.
I liked the human alliance one, it was delightfully bulky..
It’s funny how the cars keep changing when they’re using concept ones.. People who accuse them of product placement should keep an eye on how many of those vehicles actually end up coming out, let alone within the affordability range of the movies’ audience XD
The DotM Sideswipe isn’t over here in Ireland yet (and either the retailers skipped Prime or the TV show isn’t over here until after September), but …
Do you think Hasbro missed a trick here?
Simply rename the convertible to Sunstreaker and you have the second brother and re-establish rights to the name. It also means that you have the chance to issue the non-convertible as a Sideswipe later on. Or would he be a repaint?
I only have the battle version of RotF Sideswipe (no swords) but it looks like this transformation is different for DotM. Is that the case?
They probably don’t need to re-establish the rights to Sunstreaker’s name at the moment. Sunstreakers have been coming out regularly for a few years now.
So if I buy a stingray will it turn into a badass robot? Cuz if it does I’m totally getting that car even if I have tomorgage my organs.
