Nickelodeon has the rights to turtle now. So 4kids won’t be involved.
Turtles Forever was pretty good, if enormous fanwank (not that there’s anything wrong with that now and then). Still, I do share your anger at a kids cartoon existing to sell toys. That’s outrageous.
Turtles forever seemed like the accumulation of the love/hate relationship the creators have with their fans. Just… they love the incarnations and their fans but also hate them and wanted to tease the shit out of them for such a long time- and as they were being given up for good this was their last chance to do so.
But it was good and did remove some of the bad taste of FF/BttS in some respects just from being so CRAZY and hanging lampshades on almost EVERYTHING on the OT.
Of course when the OT went a bit ‘darker’ in the red sky series (though looking back it was still silly to me, just in a different way) compared to its original kiddy/more delibrately cheesy version, people complained as well and it led to its ‘downfall’ in that incarnation too, at least that’s whats generally believed.
Perhaps the key here is consistency, or at least when you change something a bit, the change being gradual and feeling more organic than what both these incarnations eventually pulled- they kind of alienated the fans from the beginning in each probably. I mean look at S4 turtles and FF and… it doesn’t even seem like the same cartoon anymore.
In the 80′s, that’s exactly what every cartoon was.
This. If you havent realized by now that 80s cartoons were glorified toy commercials, then you havent watched any, EVER. (I’d also point out, on the whole, they were SUCCESSFUL toy commercials.)
The turtles will never really die- when one incarnation fails, eventually another will pop up. If TMNT can survive their anime incarnation* and whatever the hell that whole ‘Out of their shells’ band weirdness, they can survive anything. Sure the 03 toon is dead now, but that never meant they couldn’t be picked up again and ‘reimagined’ once more.
I’m just curious as to what this new incarnation will be like.

Considering I have a pair of old school action figures who’s schtick was that they’d shoot a pizza out of their shells…eh, I don’t know if we can really complain about modern turtles being anymore toyetic than the TMNT of the ’80s. And at least they haven’t had a touring concert.

HAHAHAHAH. Oh god. Cool to know about the voices though- so we’re getting turtles again! YES. I just hope it’s not going end up as the suck-fest of fastforward or ending of BacktotheSewers season (WTF… just WTF.). It just didn’t fit those TMNT counterparts- the FastForward season might have been something I’d have marginally enjoyed if it hadn’t been the NT turtles involved I think but some other brand new characters instead (despite Cody sucking ass). I wonder what style they’ll go for though- will it be as cheesy as the Old toon, will they try to lampshade all the cheesy things sort of in the way they do with New Scooby Doo cartoons? Mmmm.
MAYBE VENUS WILL COME. DUNDUNDUN.
(You know I actually don’t hate the idea of Venus, just remove her magic or something or maybe make it not so damn convenient that she too learned a martial art and she might not be half bad. BLASPHEMY).
Also while I never did … uh that as so Robin colourfully stated, one of my first cartoon crushes was on OT Leonardo. I think I was 8 or something- it was sometime when they were rerunning the turtle cartoons in the 90s anyway in the UK. Also April, just a little bit. I kind of think I shipped them too back then, even if I hadn’t a clue what shipping WAS. Har.
Watching the NT was amusing in some ways when I remembered that. Granted my favourite turtles are now both Leo and Don in the NT, despite the last two seasons being pretty disappointing. Eh, they needed another reboot in some respects after that. Let’s see what happens before we utterly freak out. I just hope they DO show/decide on what they’re going for they STICK to it (OT or NT style) instead of starting off as darker and derailing it a lot later (as the last two seasons of the new TMNT were to get new viewers).

Okay, first I read the comic on it’s own and it was pretty funny.
Then I read the title, got the Animaniacs reference, and chuckled a bit to myself, but kind of wondered why it was titled that. “Really wrong” isn’t much of a double entendre.
Then I remembered that the voice actors name, which (this being 6AM) hadn’t really registered with me.
Then I LOLed.
Why am I not surprised? There’s yaoi, yuri and hentai all over the internet…

Rob Paulsen voicing Donatello now is awesome cuz I’ve had a thing for Don longer than my thing for Raph….. But considering that this will be on Nickelodeon I won’t be at all surprised if/when Cam Clarke is cast in the show (which is set to premier in 2012 but Rob says they’re filming the pilot now). Rob and Cam are like in nearly every Nickelodeon show. Heck their characters in Back to the Barnyard are best friends. *lol*
