While I don’t want to see Robin’s face melt off, either, I was surprised to see Face-Melting Ethan™. Wasn’t the Covenant (for which the Ark was named) made with his people?
Geeze, you’d think Ethan would at least know enough to close his eyes…
Also, not that I in any way want to get rid of Ethan from the strip, but I’m suddenly chuckling at the idea that he’d suddenly just be gone, and the whole excuse was “He really shouldn’t have looked at the Ark” and he’s never seen again. I’m not asking for that, I don’t want to get rid of Ethan, but I just keep seeing the other characters in my head saying that and giggling.
Like “Oh, hey, Transformers 3 opens up tomorrow. Shame Ethan had to go and look at the Ark of the Covenant, or he’d already be in line to see it.”
In the Bureau 13 novels, they use the Ark as a trap to keep people out of the vault where they contain all the indestructible supernatural/alien WMDs and such, by having a pulley system that would open it right in the face of anyone who opened the door to the vault.

Hey, God killed seventy Israelite dudes just for looking into inside of it. They’re not immune from God’s wrath.
Wow. Now *that’s* a replica worthy of high collector prices!
That should be the next statue…..Amber, Mike, and Melted-Face Ethan….
Shouldn’t have looked, Ethan…

You can look at the Ark all you want you can touch it unless you say that stuff from Raiders.
