He just sort of drifted - he drifted into his job at Shortpacked!, he drifted into discovering his sexual orientation, he drifted in and out of relationships. This is another example of him going with the flow - going along with Robin locking Galasso up and putting him in charge. Ethan finally beginning to steer his own destiny rather than watching where it would take him was essential to his character development. From here in the future, his story is finished because he finally learned how to make his own choices rather than just being buffetted about by external forces. He never seemed to me like a character who was very deliberate in his life choices. He just sort of drifted – he drifted into his job at Shortpacked!, he drifted into discovering his sexual orientation, he drifted in and out of relationships. This is another example of him going with the flow – going along with Robin locking Galasso up and putting him in charge.
