Malaya

Malaya is not easy to get along with, and for good reason. She’s bitter, caustic, and spoiled. Oh, she does her job well enough, but it’s hard to interact with her without her offending you on every level.

Not many people like her, except for Ken, who’s always been infatuated with her, and Leslie, who seems to be the only human being Malaya is sweet to. She owns a pet iguana, who she calls Fuckface. Of course she calls it Fuckface.

Profile inexplicably leaves out that malaya 1. owns, 2. upsets nerds because she makes fun of their stupid nerd things, 3. totally owns because she upsets nerds when she makes fun of their stupid nerd things.

Considering how incredibly dorky your username is and what it references, I find your comment endlessly amusing from its hypocrisy. Nerrrrrd.

Yeah, it probably has nothing to do with her ‘bitter, caustic, and spoiled’ behavior, her general disdain for anyone who isn’t herself or Leslie, and frequent insults and bratty attitude towards the people she lives with.

But let’s go with the nerd thing, you have to be edgy and cool on the internet, and being a jerk is the only way to do that!

Like Billie in DoA, I like Malaya simply because I’m tried of nerdy characters in webcomics.

First Faz gets totally ignored (even during the chapter about him!), and now the focus light goes to some unknown character?

I know I am in no position to complain (you provide me with free entertainment, no strings attached), but the later Shortpacked keeps on disappointing me.
Malaya is probably the last straw.

After its introduction, this character seems to be skin-deep and over-the-top convenient.

She is an asshole who JUST happens to be a lesbian, and JUST happens to have a totally unexplained soft-spot for Leslie (who was JUST needing some lesbian girl to get over Robin).

Suspension of disbelief should allow me to forget all that and just enjoy the story… but…
    I just don’t know…

This particular character bugs a lot. She looks too shallow, but not in an interesting way like Faz or Mike usually do.

For someone who has just entered the Shortpacked universe, she has received a “protagonist role” way too quickly.
She seems to appear on most scenes, but with no justification whatsoever. Doing nothing interesting and not interacting with anyone.

Besides Leslie (and by extension, Robin) nobody seems to care (or even know) she is hanging out with them.

Nobody wonders what she is thinking, nobody gets mad at her for being an asshole, nobody tries to get closer to her, nobody tries to be away from her as much as possible….

She is just… there. Doing anything but being an obstacle for Robin and a Love-interest for Leslie and Ken.

Even if I do agree that Malaya isn’t a very interesting character (for now, I hope), her presence on mostly each recent strip is still quite logical: she works there and she follows Leslie like her shadow. Like you said, she’s a new member, it will take time before the interactions with the others are developed. Just look how long it took to Jacob to become a real, meaningful character…

And seriously, I won’t complain if she doesn’t open her mouth each time we see her.

I don’t think she’s ever said she was a lesbian or even hinted at it. Just because she doesn’t like Ken doesn’t mean she’s a lesbian. And it remains to be seen whether she is sincere about liking Leslie or just fucking with her.

Don’t like it too much. Never trust someone whose name has multiple interpretations.

I’m not totally convinced Malaya is strictly lesbian. I think she’s coming on to Leslie to mess with Robin…who once said she was “straight, with an exception.”

I hate you Malaya. So very much.

I’m just gonna go on record here as saying that, honestly, I prefer Leslie/Malaya more then Leslie/Robin. Leslie spent her first relationship endlessly chasing Robin until she got tired of it. Now, it’s kind of the other way around, with Leslie as the object of affection.

I know this is likely just setting up Leslie to realize how much she should be with Robin or something, but I for one would not be against this lasting forever…
