But the toon Starfire act least ACTED like a naive kid who was learning about romance and friendship. Yeah, they overplayed the language barrier, but still… a far better role model for young girls who are immigrants… Which is partly what her character was intended as (for the cartoon), I think.
I know you probably didn’t mean any offense, but honestly it’s fucking annoying when people call genuinely intelligent people who act silly or scatterbrained ‘ditzy.’ Starfire wasn’t stupid or particularly immature in the anime, she was just a little goofy.
Really? I’d guess that Ken mostly ignores race in his preferences based on the girls we’ve seen him express interest in: Malaya, Conquest, that girl at the end of the Kenquest arc, and this new girl.
I’m not sure if we could say he was “interested in” Conquest. When Malaya said how cute she was, he didn’t seem to notice. But he must have been attracted to her enough to “do the deed”, so to speak.
Whether you count Conquest or not, he’s expressed interest in girls on many varying points of the Fitzpatrick scale. I don’t think skin color matters much to him, which is a point in his favor IMHO.
I was going to say something about that, but then I wondered if that wasn’t relevant since he’s Asian. Then I wondered if it was racist to think that second thought.
I think the undertone that slipped beneath most people’s radar is that someone assumed Malaya (a Filipino girl) “looked like she would know about” a Japanese product.
Her boobs and butt WERE quite shiny in the previous comic. She must’ve gotten the rare variant copy with shiny paper that glows under light. It was an act of mercy on the colorists’ parts.
Honestly, the idea of a Twilightified!Starfire hurts my childhood less than the scans from that first issue did.
I wonder if Ken just feels the need to bang every new female face that walks in the door now. Well, sometimes once the first time is done with, a person feels like a kid in a candy store.
Yesss, I am so excited for Lucy’s return. I am all for the introduction of more girl geeks, especially ones with her great taste. Is this Lucy looking for a part-time job between classes, or has she just graduated into our terrible job market? (Do not ask me how many of my fellow graduates from my major have ended up in retail.)
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one whose brain keeps parsing Bakugan (little marble-things that unfold into robots) as Byakugan (the Hyuuga clan’s kekkei genkai).
How far did he get into Fall? Did they pass out discussing Bad Comedy, wonder if they should have salami or balogna in their sandwiches or simply discover that they do have The Touch.
Not that I think you take Jason Todd-esque polls on the opinions of your readers, but I thoroughly approve of the addition of Lucy to the crew, Willis!
On one hand, my suspension of disbelief over Malaya being able to not be fired is wearing thin.
On the OTHER hand, considering the REST of the people working at this place…Hell, Mike and Ninja Rick alone…
Mike and Ninja Rick both treat customers horribly on occasion, but at least they know about the products. And iirc neither of them decked anyone just for assuming they’d know about a product line. Mostly they just react obnoxiously when customers get obnoxious to begin with.
Lucy has returned! Wow, was this planned? What seemed like a one off character who wasn’t even shown in the store – and used for a single joke/message centered around a controversial and stupid depiction of a well-liked DC character from almost a year ago is now shown to be a real viable (and hopefully recurring) character who wants to work at the store? And adding to that – she’s a cutie wearing glasses!!!
Willis, you spoil us; and us naught more than mere readers, we’re so unworthy of these things!
I am assuming (hoping?) that that storyline will be resolved within the next two weeks. The Walkyverse anniversary is coming up; big things tend to happen this time of year.
I wasn’t trying to be awesome. That was my legitimate frustration typing. Also, I take umbrage to being presumed lazy enough to just hit the caps lock. I hold down the shift key.
Nope. It grew over the 9 months she was caring the baby. 030 Before that it was short and before that it was about that length. :3 But I kinda like it. ^v^
She’s either a really light skinned black lady or the color came out lighter than intended. The funny thing is it didn’t bother me until someone else called attention to it. *facepalm*
Blonde Amber in DoA is followed by Black Roz here?
Not to mention Joyce as light-haired, female, white Faz in today’s DoA
So I wasn’t the only one thinking that @ panel 4…
Well NOW you aren’t. crap.
It’s the DOWalky Singularity! The Mayans were right! THEY WERE RIGHT!
…I may be slightly sleepy
Hey, is this the “What the frig” girl who threw away the New-52 comic??
Based on the tags, yep. If she genuinely has good taste, she’ll probably end-up like Ethan.
The tags clearly say so, but she is wearing glasses now, a clear sign that is important and will stick around!
Wear glasses to job interview to indicate importance. Noted. Good to know.
Also, mention nerdy things that sound productive.
TBH, I’ve been doing that for years.
Huh…so have I! I figured it would make a better first impression than squinting at them and running into things in their office.
Talking to the topiary in the corner also tends to come off badly.
Careful, it could just be a disguise.
I like what Ryu’s facial expression in that last panel implies about his perception of Malaya now.
Yeah, I think the shine has finally come off that apple.
how does she feel about Starfire?
Which one? The George perez “balloon-bod” model or the anime ditzy model. Neither present womanhood
Well, anime ditzy one was still an adolescent…so…yeah.
They were both adolescents.
Way to bring back Characters from stand alone pages into the story there Willis. I wonder what will become of “I don’t like the new starfire” Lucy.
I’m still waiting for Duncan to move in with Ken, Malaya & whathisname.
In her defense, I would punch someone for assuming that too.
I would have Mike put his penis in your mom’s FAAAAAACE for a nickel.
Feels worse knowing they said it to the Asian chick.
Okay Amber, now fire Malaya and fire the new girl.
She can’t do that until she’s hired
Scruffy: *turns page* Second.
Malaya’s got JOB SECURITY…
…or maybe it’s not as close to a firable offense as Ninja Rick stabbinatin’ folks.
Stabbing people is no reason to fire someone…Some people need a good stabbin’!
Yeah like obnoxious customers.
Setting someone on fire isn’t a fireable offense apparently. Again, Malaya is just on the wrong side of the Comedic Sociopath line.
It seems Ken has a thing for the darker chicks. Guess Ken prefers chocolate.
Nothing wrong with that but I am somewhat a fan of the nougat range myself.
I love all shades of people except, purple, green, and blue. I’m not racist. I’m just afraid your bright coloration insinuates that you are poisonous.
I do hate to be eaten.
Then the person’s clearly doing it wrong.
That’s NOT what she said.
This comment made my night. Very Far Side-esque.
Really? I’d guess that Ken mostly ignores race in his preferences based on the girls we’ve seen him express interest in: Malaya, Conquest, that girl at the end of the Kenquest arc, and this new girl.

TIL: Fitzpatrick scale.
I concur
At Ken’s age, all she has to be is willing and breathing.
I was going to say something about that, but then I wondered if that wasn’t relevant since he’s Asian. Then I wondered if it was racist to think that second thought.
For once, I support what Malaya just did. Bakugan fans need to get decked HARD!
Hey, the guy didn’t know what it was, so he’s probably just a tired parent who doesn’t know about all yer newfangled pokeymans. Malaya’s still a dick.
Well if Malaya didn’t hit him Mike would’ve. Place is kind of a death trap.
true, between ninja rick, mayla, and mike, I’m suprised mayla got to him first.
I think the undertone that slipped beneath most people’s radar is that someone assumed Malaya (a Filipino girl) “looked like she would know about” a Japanese product.
Or perhaps the patron just assumed that “A TOY STORE EMPLOYEE” would know about thier store’s products?
Lucy in the store wants hirin’.
Lucy in the store wants hirin’
Aaaaaaaahhhhh.
Picture yourself…
Lucy has some explainin’ to do.
Swing and a miss.
Picture yourself in a store selling toys, like Batman Beyond and Optimus Prime.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Follow her down to the shelf by the counter
Where pokemon heroes sell lookinglass tie-ins
Everyone smiles as you drift past the Power Rangers
Made while so incredibly high
What really sells it is that Malaya looks the tiniest bit concerned there, as if she regrets her action, while understanding that she had no choice.
It was out of my hands…I had to do it. I’ll clean him up and put him in the dumpster where he belongs.
Yeah, like it’s an unpleasant, but compulsory part of store policy.
Yes, she isn’t bragging here, she’s actually taking responsibility for her actions by reporting them to her immediate superior.
Of course since Amber is marrying Mike, I wonder if what she really objects to is not the deed but Malaya coming and bothering her about it.
She’s got this Rozzy/Joyce feel going on.
It both fears and titillates me so.
Her skin’s a touch darker, and her eyes bereft of soul-crushing anger, but the hair really gives me a Sydney Yus vibe. And it has been a while…
Lucy! I like Lucy. Starfire was my favorite, too and I miss her. Also I like her new glasses.
… she looks suspiciously simmilar to Sydney Yus. Except not as insane.
… OR IS SHE?!
I thought it was Sydney at first too (would seem to be consistent with Ken’s taste in women so far, as well).
Malaya is fitting quite nicely to the store ethos.
GREAT ETHOOOOOOOOOS
If you’re wondering why she’s wearing glasses now…It’s that Issue 52 starfire damaged her eyes.
And thus, a second Jacob/Joe is born!
Those snowglobe babies sure do grow up quickly!
I think it can only go one way or the other with Jacob and Joe. It’s the difference of wether or not he feels bad about himself when it’s over.
What *is* a backy gon?
Imagine Yugio and Digimon had an illegitamte child.
I thought there was some sort of top thing going on instead of cards? More in line with Bey Blades than Yu-Gi-Oh!?
Could be wrong, though. I’ve avoided that thing like the plague.
no it’s more like balls that turn into monsters…so maybe throw pokemon into the mix…and they still have cards.
If I were you, I would have my balls checked out immediately if they started turning into monsters.
I think I saw that anime once, and I am definitely not letting my kids watch it.
Soooo, less “illegitimate child” and more “this is your premise on insanity”?
Please don’t ever link Digimon and Bakugon together again.
Digimon overall (esp Tamers and Frontier) is awesome. Bakugon isn’t.
Sigh. Tell you what..you can have 02. Esp the epilog!
I think yugio is awesome. But if two awesome things are combined, It could still turn out shitty.
That is pretty much it. But not half as good as either and by not half as much I mean no where near half.
I like Yotomoe’s answer better, but I’m guessing byakugan? (As in the eyes Hyuuga have in Naruto.) I could be wrong!
Never mind, I’d somehow missed Aizat’s comment. I learn something every day!
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one whose brain keeps parsing Bakugan (little marble-things that unfold into robots) as Byakugan (the Hyuuga clan’s kekkei genkai).
Is it just me, or does the Do Not Enter sign on the border of panel 3 look like Amber’s lips in panel 4, as if she’s wearing lipstick?
Maybe it’s just me.
Hey! Is the TTG! Starfire fan right?
And at least she nows have the return of Teen Titans in DC nation
Hey, anyone notice the two “No” symbols in the background? Isn’t hat usually Willis foreshadowing?
How far did he get into Fall? Did they pass out discussing Bad Comedy, wonder if they should have salami or balogna in their sandwiches or simply discover that they do have The Touch.
SUUUURE she turned out fine.
Oh. I thought it was Sydney Yus in disguise, or something.
Can’t believe LUCY showed up. Didn’t see that coming!
Not that I think you take Jason Todd-esque polls on the opinions of your readers, but I thoroughly approve of the addition of Lucy to the crew, Willis!
I don’t think a reader poll would really be necessary to decide which character gets beaten to death with a crowbar.
No, no, the poll is to determine whether they live or die after crowbar beatings.
Well, it IS a cute character design. I can see why Willis would want to use her more.

Willis, you spoil us; and us naught more than mere readers, we’re so unworthy of these things!
He sure does. Hopefully that means the mute girl (I couldn’t find her name) from March will also make an appearince in the future.
Hey, it’s Person-Who-Hates-New-52-Starfire #683 (AKA Lucy).
I knew she looked familiar.
I like Malaya, but yeah, she might be terrible at this.
Don’t be a manager, Ken.
Wait, so does this mean Amber turned down Conny’s job offer?
I am assuming (hoping?) that that storyline will be resolved within the next two weeks. The Walkyverse anniversary is coming up; big things tend to happen this time of year.
WHO LIKES THIS WOMAN?! EVEN KEN IS LOSING THE AMOUNTS OF FUCKS HE GIVES ABOUT MALAYA. SHE IS A LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN.
As much as I dislike Malaya, I still put her over people that think the caps lock key is cruise control for awesome.
I wasn’t trying to be awesome. That was my legitimate frustration typing. Also, I take umbrage to being presumed lazy enough to just hit the caps lock. I hold down the shift key.
Then I apologize for insinuating that you used the wrong key.
Huh.
I thought I was the only person who did that.
Malaya is my favorite character.
Again, as many people have pointed out, Mike & Ninja Rick have done faaaaaar worse than what Malaya did.
Backy gon? Is that what they’re calling them these days?
Has Amber’s hair always been that long? I just noticed it today, but it also looks that way on the banner. I could’ve sworn it used to be shorter.
I guess, between Shortpacked! and the baby, there WOULD little time to get it cut, huh?
It was shorter. She grew it out so she didn’t look like Faz.
Nope. It grew over the 9 months she was caring the baby. 030 Before that it was short and before that it was about that length. :3 But I kinda like it. ^v^
The real question: Was Lucy’s return planned or did he just like the character design enough to revive her?
Red Hood and the Outlaws is a bad comic, but I don’t think enough people are still reading it to justify more references.
I’m sure he can find things to do with her that don’t rely on Starfire jokes.
[gasp!] Lucy! I love Lucy!
…There, now I can scratch that one off my checklist.
am I the only one who think that gal looked like a ghost?
She’s either a really light skinned black lady or the color came out lighter than intended. The funny thing is it didn’t bother me until someone else called attention to it. *facepalm*
