I can think of some other ways to respond!

For example, you could realize that “monogamous marriage = happiness” for some people, and those people just might wish for such a thing out loud. They do exist.

Another way to respond is to understand that not everything a character believes is a belief they share with the author. Lord knows I’m an atheist and I spent a week in my other webcomic writing a fundamentalist Christian extolling the virtues of worshiping God.

Along those lines, yet another way to respond is to realize that not everything presented in storytelling is part of a dark agenda, a piece of propaganda for some insidious truth. Some times characters just say what they feel because that’s what those individuals feel at that point in their lives.

Another way to respond is to use a word other than “stereotype,” I think? I dunno if that’s quite the right word.
