Sex is normal for Roz but Jacob has an addictive personality…something 17 hours of straight sex would make you realise about yourself.
Roz has economized it though, so I question the normalcy therein. Also DRAMA BOMB!!
Eating pizza is normal, too. But if you find yourself eating only pizza, always pizza, constantly pizza, and about six meals’ worth of pizza every day, and angrily lecturing anybody who does not like pizza, it might not be normal anymore.
Unless you’re in Washington and live next to a Sahara’s. Then it would be totally understandable.
…what in the Cheese’s name are you talking about? Pizza is awesome, especially with lots of vegetables as toppings!

Hmm.. Considering that whole flap about Congress wanting to make Pizza a vegetable (not completely true, it was about the tomato sauce), would that mean you’re having vegetables with your vegetables?

Well, since Jacob doesn’t angrily lecture people who don’t like sex, he obviously doesn’t have a problem, and thus Roz is right.
… except Roz IS angrily lecturing….
If Jacob doesn’t feel comfortable having sex, it’s his right not to have sex. Even if you take the sex addiction away, if he doesn’t feel right having sex with Roz or anyone, no one should shame him for feeling that way.
So he should instead say, “I want a relationship based on XYZ, not just pure sex.” Maybe Roz truly wants that, but all she knows how to do to get him to shut up about his THERAPIST telling him not to see Roz anymore is to keep sexing him.
Has he really said he wants a relationship with her? Has he ever said he wants to be with anyone?
Oh you mean carefully and manipulatively changing the subject every time he starts talking about his psychological needs as they remotely relate to her and his relationship with her?
That doesn’t exactly make her behavior any more sympathetic or justified. It just means she’s avoiding COMMUNICATING with him.
Not a good way to have a “relationship”.

Just because someone wants a relationship doesn’t mean they want romance.

I never realized before how deep Roz’s reproductive rights thing was. I always thought it was a rebellious thing but that “sex-hating” shrink seems to have really touched a nerve.
Maybe Roz is an addict too and she’s using activism as her justification?
It’s possible, though I’m not sure. For some reason I’m having a bit of trouble in guessing her true motivations here.
On another note, that is one awesome Richard Garfield gravatar you have.
Perhaps she’s tired of being told that what she does with her body is a bad thing if it’s something she enjoys doing. She doesn’t want other people’s opinions and hangups defining who she is to the point that she won’t realize if it ever becomes a problem for her or someone else.
But at the same time, she definitely tells other people what to do with their bodies – she goes too far, unfortunately.
she’s become so overprotective, she’s become what she hates the most.
This happens to just about everybody, sadly.
Take any oppressed group, and you can find the looney 10% who are just as bad as their oppressors.
Yeah, I think her rebel against the “sex is bad” preach has gone so far to the other end that she refuses to acknowledge that (safe) sex can ever be harmful.
She’s straightening up Jacob’s life to prove, mostly to herself, that sex was not the root of Jacob’s problems. Or to prove to herself that she does not have a sex addiction herself.
Know what doesn’t get you a nice normal healthy relationship, Roz? Being a selfish bitch.

I’m not sure that Roz could keep pace with Charlie Sheen when it comes to sexual escapades. However, Willis has proven me wrong on other topics before!

Well, where does “slut-shaming” begin or end? At what point is it right or wrong to criticize another’s reproductive behavior?
Though Roz seems to fall a little on the “Have lots of sex or you’re wrong!” strawman level.
I think she just wants Jacob to realize that it’s nothing to be ashamed of so that he’ll not make such a big deal out of it. If he stops making such a big deal out of it then he won’t give it as much power over him and it might not ruin his life no mo’.
He was dropping out of school and ruining his life before he saw that shrink. it’s another outgrowth of his addictive personality, and unfortunately she is saying, “There is no such thing as a sex addiction. Ever! So shut up and have more sex now! You’re not having more sex? You’re a sex-hater!”
yeah but Roz wants to fix his problem. She probably thinks that if she can oversaturate him, he will stop worrying about it. I’m not saying she’s right. I’m just saying that’s her motive.
And she’s unwilling to listen to the possibility that she may not be helping things at the moment.
Also, I dunno, but the moment my partner screams “YOU JERK!” and takes a swing at me or throws something at me… I would either try to evaluate if I AM being a jerk, or evaluate if the relationship should continue.
Well he was already doing the latter so there’s not much he can do.

Looks like he’s bad (horrible) at self-restraint, period, to me, and somehow gotten hung up on the idea that it’s the sex that triggers all the other addictive behaviour – so long as he doesn’t indulge in sex, he doesn’t indulge in any other vices. He needs to reroute his brains a bit – I ‘m not entirely sure how good modern psychology is at that stuff.
I wouldn’t know, though.
I’d feel bad for Roz, but the truth is Jacob had a healthier relationship with Amber’s Mom than he ever had with her…
Which makes me wonder if Roz is going to pour her hear out only to be rejected when Jacob says he wants Stacey.

I got a feeling that Roz isn’t going to change Jacobs mind. He may not be going about solving his problems in the best way right now, but at least he recognizes that he does have a problem. That is more than Roz is willing to do, for either one of them.

Bleh, no! If they manage anything approximating a healthy relationship after the way she basically bullied him into bed that first time, I will be physically ill.
I’d much rather he end up with Stacey, if we’re going with current characters. She actually was willing to take “no” for an answer. Roz was an ABSOLUTE slut-shamer; she told him he wasn’t a virgin so it didn’t matter. If that’s NOT slut-shaming, I don’t know what is.

I for one like Roz’s definition of “normal”. Which I hope is lots of monogamous intercoarse with someone you have a multifacitated attraction with. In fact I think that Roz could be a good thing for Jacob. Granted she keeps with the previous definition of normal and can help keep Jacob on top of his other goals.
Assuming Jacob has any interest in her outside of sex.
My interpretation is he doesn’t. He pretty much says, in this strip, that she thinks she’s unhealthy, a bad influence, and not worth pursuing a relationship with.
I haven’t seen much of a facet to their relationship besides a vigorous sex life. Roz is extremely manipulative and controlling of him, and Jacob seems to view her as a problem he’s trying to overcome. They don’t seem to share anything in the way of hobbies, views, or compatible personality traits so far.
This reminds me a lot of when Dina kept Mike plastered.
Please don’t make me stop hating Roz, Willis! I need at least one one dimensional hate-sack to loathe!
Well. I guess I still have Malaya.
She’s still a goddamn bitch in my book. Note how she’s been using sex to keep him from thinking… It’s a lot like how Dina kept Mike plastered, like Björn is saying, and that’s a really bad thing.
Also, by using Singularikitty to get rid of the stuff in his apartment, she’s only mitigating the symptoms of his illness rather than allowing him to actually cope with the root of his problems.
And only the symptoms that bothered her, at that.
Roz would be soooo much more likeable if she stopped insisting that Jacob’s addictive personality, which he did not choose to have, is somehow both imaginary and an insult to everything she is and stands for.
Seriously. Malaya is just a bit annoying and mostly too pathetic to even care about, but Roz… I like everything else about her, especially her sex-positive attitude, but her “sex addiction doesn’t exist” issue cancels that out. She preaches acceptance, but she’s really only showing acceptance for her own lifestyle.
I’d like it if Willis did make Roz more likeable, but there’s always the DoA version.
Eh, I’m kind of glad Willis makes his characters have sides to like and not like. Roz has personality traits to love and hate, as do most people.
Boy, after her appearances in DOA and her relative absence in this comic, it was pretty easy to forget for a while what a loathesome person she is in this continuity.
You know, Roz. If you want a normal relationship, you should probably start by not using sex to placate a guy who believes himself addicted to sex.
And hey, while you’re at it, why don’t you quit sabotaging a persons hobbies because you’re not interested in them. Jesus, did you get all your relationship advice from horrible romantic comedies?
Well, hey. She’s not destroying toys because she’s uninterested in the hobby, I don’t think. Roz believes that the “sex addiction” thing is a scapegoat from Jacob’s actual problems with hoarding and whatnot. From her perspective, she’s targeting the root and helping Jacob feel better about himself. Her motivations aren’t really selfish, just… Wrong.
It’d be one thing if she was trying to help him adjust his financial priorities, and cut back on unnecessary purchases. Hell, such a thing would probably be welcome, since Jacob has stated before that he tends to hoard. And hell, maybe that’s what she’s doing. But I sincerely doubt it because what we’ve seen is her going behind his back in secret and having her cat eat all of his toys, and express that he and his apartment are much better off under her guiding hand without any toys at all. Remember when Drew pulled that with Ethan? Well, hey, they’re still in a committed and healthy relationship with Drew still a character in this comic OH SNAP NONE OF THAT IS TRUE.
Addendum. What Drew did is better than what Roz is doing, because he at least tried to meet Ethan halfway (He couldn’t, but he tried). And while Drew has no singularikitty to feed toys to, Ethan did pack all of his toys into a bunch of bus-tubs in a closet to try to appease him, which had almost the same net effect.

The fact that she’s sticking with one guy means absolutely nothing. If they have nothing but sex all the time and she’s trying to feed at least one side of addictive personality, and your trying to stop him from sorting out his issues, she has no idea what a relationship is. Sometimes a ‘smarter then thou’ lifestyle is more annoying then a ‘holier then thou’ lifestyle, and Roz is the epitome of that. She claims to be more open-minded about views, but at the same time she views her open-minded views to be better then anyone else’s.
Fact is, she’s been living that lifestyle so long she honestly does not know what a normal relationship. She’s more likely to compromise her relationship then compromise her lifestyle. She’s a lot less self-less then Robin. (not saying Robin is the epitome of selflessness, but still)
Ever notice how in movies/litarature/tv the friends with benefits arrangement always ends with one falling for the other and wishing that they could be in a proper romantic relationship with them?
Me’thinks that has happened with Roz which imho kinda makes sense in a weird way after all Roz seems to have a lifestyle of running round seducing whosoever she pleases and quickly moving on but with Jacob she’s been having sex with him consistently for how long now?
There’s a strong possibility that she may have resisted seducing other guys either because she got attached to Jacob or, more likely, because attempting to satisfy Jacobs needs has left her too tired to pursue other guys.
This is probably the closest Roz has ever had to a ‘normal’ relationship and she likes it and maybe, like the friend with benefits people in movies, she has managed to pretend to herself that they are in a relationship but then Jacob starts a conversation with ‘my shrink says…’ and its like he is saying the dreaded ‘we have to talk…’ that usually heralds a break up so she tries to delay that talk indefinitely by distracting him in the best way she nows how because she doesnt want the closest thing to a normal relationship she has ever known to end.

More like stalker girlfriend than Friends with benefits. She moves in and calls it hanging out. She throws his stuff away. When he tries to talk about breaking up she forces him to have sex. No friendship at all.

What gets to me about Roz is that she’s all about sexual liberation but continues to bully a guy who struggles to deal with his own urges and has told her multiple times that he needs stay away from sex. It’s a double standard that I really don’t like.
I couldn’t read past the first panel for a while because I was laughing too hard at the first one. Imagine Jacob saying “Bitch, please” instead of “Roz, please”
Ugh what is this. No, Roz, no. This is really messed up.
Jacob’s sex addiction is getting in the way of his life. Yeah, if someone wants to have sex a lot with a ton of people, great! But:
1. He literally has no control over it, and this is lack of control is making it unenjoyable for him.
2. It prevents him from doing things he wants to do, and this is making him unhappy in the long run.
3. He actively wants to stop but can’t.
This is officially become a problem, and if wants to find a way to stop this addiction and gain control of his sex life, whatever that may be, then he should be supported.
And not to mention, trying to say that the sexual choices someone wants to make IS slut-shaming. Roz is trying to force his sexual lifestyle into a what she wants and would make her happy, and when he wants to change this, she tells him he’s wrong.

Roz, I hate to break it to you, but if it’s a normal, healthy relationship you want, you aren’t going to get it by manipulating and controlling your partner with sex and shutting him down every time he tries to discuss an issue that is important to him.
