Because God loves me, he gave the world a version of Fall of Cybertron Bruticus in Generation 2 colors with Generation 2 symbols in Generation 2 packaging, so that I may buy the hell out of it. Honestly, I am not super-familiar with Bruticus’s Generation 2 colors — like, before this fall, I probably couldn’t have told you Blast-Off was white or Vortex was blue off-hand — but despite this, this version of these guys is really setting off my happybrains. And, really, there is a huge deficit in yellow/purple Transformers, so thank you, G2 Onslaught.
Since this guy is G2 colors with G2 symbols in a G2 box, that makes him a new iteration of the original Combaticon characters from the Eighties, rather than an iteration of the new Fall of Cybertron/Aligned characters the first releases of the toy represented. (Continuity families are a tricky business.) This means that as a special bonus, even though this is just another set of Combaticons all with the same names and personalities, they still count as separate, different characters in my brain. These guys’ll go on my G1/G2 shelf, with the San Diego Comic-Con version hanging out with my Aligned/WFC/FOC/Prime guys.
Earthy beigeness be damned, this guy’s way prettier than the original. Yes, I’m talking about an entity that includes a space shuttle that has purple camo. Realism doesn’t really enter into my appreciation of this guy. It’s all tingling nerve endings. A perfectly visual stimulus, absent from reason.
This guy’s an online exclusive in North America. He’s sold out at Amazon, which is where I got mine, but Big Bad Toy Store still has some.

The packaging is so beautiful I’m loath to open it.
I do really want these guys, now I want them it two colors…
Man, this makes me want to hit ‘Ship My Loot!’ at BBTS right now. I was going to wait and add a few more things to the pile, but they are SO PRETTY.
Is your G2 (or FOC) version of Onslaught’s weapon suffering from plastic stress at the peg-holes where you mount it on top of his vehicle mode and/or at the peg-holes where you mount it behind Bruticus’ head? Seems like the pairs are just a hair closer together than their respective pegs, maybe.
Despite that, though (and the minor scraping I had to do with an Xacto to get Onslaught’s head to seat properly) (and the fact that they’re sort of plain in robot mode since all their paint apps probably went to their rad purple camo) I agree, these guys rock. They definitely poke the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers lobe of the brain in a way that is good.
Mine doesn’t seem to have any plastic stress points.
My brain immediately leapt to “my brain lobe doesn’t have plastic stress points.”
Yeah mine had stress marks on all four sockets on Onslaught’s cannon right out of the box (also abysmal paint jobs on Swindle and Onslaught’s eyes, but that’s a whole other matter)
My Swindle has somehow managed to have his Decepiton symbol half way off his chest. I pretend he got it cheap in a deal.
And yeah, I’ve got stress marks on Onslaughts weapon holes.
My Onslaught has stress marks on only one hole. I guess statistically speaking there had to be at least one like that.
Yeah, pretty much right out the box. It’a a real bummer. Wonder why specifically it happened– and to be clear, this isn’t a problem people are having with the Fall of Cybertron retail/SDCC versions of the Onslaught mold? Different plastic type, maybe?
Paint doesn’t bug me, ‘cuz that’s both easy and kind of fun to fix if I feel like it. I feel like Blast Off and Vortex suffer most from unpainted weaponry in this deco, so I’ve been giving them each others’ weapons for added color variety. Vortex gets pistols to balance out his attached blades, and Blast Off gets gun-blades to go with the whole “space knight” motif he’s got going on, visually (and wings in vehicle mode!).
Based on the pictures in the old post about the Comic-Con set and on the punching picture here, it looks like you’re mis-transforming Vortex. Take a look at Vortex in the still-boxed picture, and how the area of his robot mode chest is unfolded, lengthening the arm mode. It seems you’re missing that step of the transformation, hence why you were having issues with the Comic-Con one’s disparity in arm length.
Ignore this if you already figured that out.
The Robots in Disguise Annual already depicted FOC Blast Off and Brawl albeit uncolored and unnamed, but chances are it’s just a matter of time before the SDCC versions are officially repurposed into the IDW G1 continuity. I just love that due to the packaging we have something that is officially part of the G2 line 17 years after it ended. I can’t wait for this guy to arrive from Amazon tomorrow; I’m one of the minority of fans who became a fan during G2 so this is totally hitting my fangasm button dead center.
Hell yes I bought this set. So far it’s the only version of the FOC Bruticus mold I own. I was only slightly disappointed that a great many of the paint apps shown on the stock photos were not present on the toys.
But, damn it, Tropical Fruit Hawaiian Punch Bruticus. I can’t argue with that logic.
Also, it’s clear to me now that one could have an entire toy room’s worth of Bruticus/Bruticus-style molds. Hell, one whole shelf could be G1 Combaticon molds.
That’s so awesome they did G2 colors! It’s the only Bruticus I ever knew. …well, most of Bruticus. My friend was never able to get all the parts, but between us we had a few limbs. The yellow Onslaught and green Brawn are probably the two most nostalgic Transformers for me.
Man, I cannot deny the appeal of a brightly colored combiner! But, I think I’m gonna wait for the Wreckers version! I’m pretty sure I read that Twin Twist is gonna be one of the parts of the team, and I actually LIKED the Twin Twist toy that I had way back in the 80s! Awesome chrome drills on him back then! I think it’s where my love of drill tanks comes from.
Yup! Twin Twist, Topspin, Whirl, Roadbuster, Impactor. The new Twin Twist will come with some sort of hand-held drill weapon. It’s gone be awesome.
Oh, that is totally freakin’ sweet!
I am very eager to see in-hand photos of that guy… the blue hues and shades in the stock photography are just too pretty to believe!
A little off topic, but I really hate the arguing about continuity families I’ve seen lately. Some people accuse others of trolling these days for saying “Prime/Aligned” continuity because it can’t POSSIBLY be the same continuity because of all the errors made. God, I wish some people would get over themselves…
In my mind, this is what happened to the Combaticons after Starscream left them dead/unconscious in the WarWorld and then used the Matrix to merge with and re-form the ship. All that Matrix energy washing around, why wouldn’t it affect them too?
This was my preferred version of Bruticus. And at $60 for the full set, probably is the most affordable way to get him!
Now that I have it, bring on the Wreckers/Ruination set!
I just wanted to point out that the other Bruticus could go on your G1/G2 shelf as well. The toys are also G1 characters – according to IDW.
Blast-Off has appeared a few time in Robots in Disguise in his FOC form. I believe there were a few other FOC Combaticons in crowd shots (though I don’t remember which ones).
Not all of them. Swindle, for example, is a unique design, probably because he was drawn into the comic before FOC Bruticus was revealed. And Vortex and Onslaught haven’t appeared yet, I don’t think. Only Brawl and Blast-Off were in that crowd.
What are the other purple and yellow transformers?
The Generation 2 Constructicons are the first example that springs to mind… or the retail-release deco of this Swindle mold (c.f. http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Swindle_%28FOC%29 )
What is the name of the blue guy being punched?
It’s Combat Hero Optimus Prime.
Its just a shame that the toy is lacking paint that the official images of the toys have. I wanted Onslaught to have a black head like he’s supposed to.
