Since Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman is like the greatest thing ever, I’ve been hankering for a toy of Batman’s “new 52″ design. Yeah, the one with all the extra lines. But the DC Direct version sure wasn’t gonna be it. That thing is a lean Jim Lee statuette. I wanted something a little closer to Greg Capullo’s slightly more stocky take on Batman. …And probably something that has more than a handful of very shallow points of articulation.
And so I snagged myself Mattel’s version. It is much nicer in nearly every single way than the DC Direct one would have been, though it’s in no way a perfect Batman toy. My old “perfect” Batman six inch figure, the one from Public Enemies (seen being punched above), still has some advantages over it. Namely… man, I know I am biased towards the cartoonish, but I still feel strongly that superheroes are way pinheaded most of the time, and it rubs me the wrong way. And so Mattel’s New 52 Batman’s tiny head looks a little hilarious. I thought maybe I could swap heads between the two, but after pulling on either head for a little bit, I was too apprehensive of breaking something, and so I let them be.
I just want a large cartoonish jaw, is that so wrong? Also, I’m a big fan of the pouch-style belt versus the new belt-belt, but whatevs. And I do wish there were a toy that were more faithful to Greg Capullo’s art style. I’d squee.
Anyway, where the hell are my Court of Owls toys?

Where do you think the Court of Owls toys are? Everywhere. Hiding in plain sight. Plotting things in their underground white expanse of labyrinth. Lying in wait. Or lying in frozen hibernation, y’know, either one.
They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed, speak not a whispered word of them or they’ll send the Talon for your head.
Did you order this online or find it in a store?
Got it from BBTS.
Do you want Talons for Batman to punch or do you want the creepy people in formal wear & Mario 2 Phantom masks for Batman to punch?
I know I’ve been here too long when the first thing I imagine after seeing that picture is: “I’M Batman!”
David, what are your thoughts on the (very hard to find) Youg Justice version of Batman? He’s somewhere in between the PE and Nu52 figures and is the closest to a Timmverse Batman that Matty will ever do… But he is pretty pinheaded still…

I probably would have picked it up if I’d seen it in stores, but I didn’t see it in stores, so I didn’t bother.
Forget Batman, I want a Goddamn Blue Falcon figure.
(with Dyno-mutt)
As someone who doesn’t quite care for the New 52, I’ve been hearing Batman, Wonder Woman and Animal Man are the best comics in the lineup. Are there any other good ones, or are they all like Red Hood and the Outlaws?
Aquaman’s pretty good, and Swamp Thing apparently goes with Animal Man as a combined awesome.
Other than that, can’t say.
Even Red Hood isn’t Red Hood any more. It had a shaky start, and while I dropped it just because I realized I was 3 issues behind and didn’t actually care, it’s moved past that.
I’ve even heard good things about Catwoman, which was the first book I dropped.
Also, anyone who doesn’t put Action Comics in the top tier right now isn’t worth listening to. (Also, of the Bat-family books, the ones actually featuring Batman are the least of them. Batwoman, Batwing, and Batgirl are by far the best of them.)
“And I do wish there were a toy that were more faithful to Greg Capullo’s art style. I’d squee.”
Words I never thought I’d hear from you. Or anyone, really, but that’s only because before Batman I hadn’t heard much of anything out of Capullo in a good decade, and before that he was (sort of) the Alex Milne to Todd McFarlane’s Pat Lee. I think I might still have a Wizard Magazine with ‘Capullo’s Corner’ storytelling tutorials from 1997. Good times.
The figure looks nice, but personally, I’m holding out hope that we’ll be able to get the (seemingly cancelled) Young Justice 6-inch Batman figure. I don’t have any strong feelings about the show one way or the other, but that design is *smexy*.
That Batman was released, but it seems like most retailers stopped ordering the line before it made it out to stores in any great number. The only options now are crazy ebay prices for the fig + base set, or buying a loose one from a seller in China. :\
Batman punching Batman. Your argument is invalid.
Hey, Dave, if you get a hair dryer and warm the heads up a lot they should pop right off. That’s the secret we customizers use.
I realize now that you may not like being called Dave and I apologize in advance.
I am not very particular about my name, though I trend towards “David.” Don’t worry!
I recall a list of no-go names on your Walkypedia article, though. Are those still off-limits?
Just curious; does BBTS/Mattel have New 52 molds of anyone else? Like Superman or Nightwing, for instance?
Superman’s in the same wave as Batman. Dunno about anybody else.
I thought they re-did the waves at the last minute so that Batman got his own three-figure wave and Superman was in another three-figure wave?
They made new 52 Bats and Supes the new official last wave of DCU Classics w/ Red Robin and Superboy Prime and are releasing them in metallic paint schemes in the DC Unlimited series (Batman w/ super powers Penguin and N52 Batgirl and Superman w/ N52 Flash and N52 Hawkman). The next release after that is N52 Wonder Woman and Injustice Batman.
NuSuperman’s on the cross-sell, that’s all I know.
Thanks!
Snyder’s been doing a bang up job with Batman. Well, except maybe that Annual with Mr. Freeze. But otherwise, great, and I can’t wait to see what he does with the Joker.
I’m liking his work a lot more than Morrison’s.
