I held out for the G2-colored redeco giftset, because G2 Vortex was one of the first/only Transformers I had as a kid (think I still have him, might have his propellers and/or 1 or 2 of his side mounted guns- definitely don’t have his nose-mounted gun or any of his Bruticus parts).

The G2 versions of these FOC molds look a little plain in some respects. G2-FOC Vortex’s sword-guns aren’t painted at all (unlike the SDCC or retail versions), meaning they’re exactly the same purple as his actual helicopter blades, making the redundancy issue even more obvious (I imagine that most of the paint applications for these guys went towards their totally rad purple camo splotches). I’ve been swapping the weapons for Vortex and Blast Off, giving them both a bit more color contrast (and homaging the shape of original Vortex’s cannons in vehicle mode, rather than their hue).

Now that I have him in hand, it’s really puzzling that the copter blades are on his arm instead of his back. From an engineering standpoint, it seems like it would have been pretty easy to attach the blades to the tail section that ends up behind his head in robot mode, rather than putting them on his arms. Half-tempted to kit bash it that way myself… Maybe get a retail Vortex or a Whirl and try it on them first.

Yes, he can hold the swords like rifles. I’ve seen it in a video review.

That’s exactly why I have no idea. All the other limbs have black hands (well okay Blast Off’s is caramel painted black) and other black parts, yet still have the purple connector. The only thing I can think of is that maybe Vortex had the room on his existing tooling molds but the others didn’t.

I’d surmise it has something to do with the breakdown of the mold sprues; making his connector purple may have given him a purple combined mode hand and helicopter gun. I think I’d have preferred all their connectors to be black, I’m pretty sure they will be on the mass release.

For a really Pink guy, he looks great. I think Vortex is the first guy I’m going to un-pack when I get to opening my set.

I’d pretend the copter blades could rotate fast enough to be a shield, then he attacks with a hand-held sword. Also, can he hold the sword like a rifle? It looks like he can. I hope so, because that would mean both his rifle and his shield are also swords.

The beige part looks also rather brownish than greenish to me. But perhaps only because of all the pink he also got.

The propellors on the arm are unfortunate. However, I think its acceptable because the game certainly didn’t help the toy by making the propellers shrink and basically disappear into his back except for tiny little ends on the top of his back. I’m happy with it, sorta homages Movie Blackout.
