For what it's worth, if you put the thumb on Bruticus' Vortex hand perpendicular to the rest of the hand, it can hold a 5mm weapon, at least in my testing.

I'm actually getting the G2 one, but from what I've seen of all 3 (or 4, counting Ruination), I prefer having Brawl and Blast Off switch places. Or Swindle and Blast Off.

The colors correspond to "red/yellow/green/blue/purple," which are all distinct and bright colors, which look good when loaded onto pegs at a store. (This is the exact specific reason Hasbro themselves gave at SDCC.) So do Energon Bruticus Maximus's colors, and for the same reason. They look similar because they're attempting similar goals, not because one is an homage to the other.

Except they don't, any more than they actually match the G1 decos. 4/5 of the team match the decos of the equivalent characters in each earlier franchise. Brawl matches both G1 Brawl and Kickback, Swindle matches both G1 Swindle and Blight, and Blast Off matches both G1 Blast Off and Blackout. Vortex matches Stormcloud, but not G1 Vortex. Onslaught matches G1 Onslaught (albeit in slightly brighter hues), but not Barricade.

It's likely that Vortex's deco was based on Stormcloud's, but the deco of the team as a whole is as much G1 as it is Energon, and for the 3/5 that they match both, there's a good chance that's because they were homaging the G1 characters in their decos. (Which sort of raises the question of why Barricade had such a different deco than Onslaught - I'm not so much wondering about Stormcloud not matching Vortex...he was a pretty plain grey in G1.)

Actually I got the feeling Onslaught suffered a bit more than Brawl. Judging from a video review, he totally lost his massive, brute proportions in toy form, especially in vehicle mode. His shoulder joint seemed also a bit weird. But maybe you'll prove me wrong on this, Willis. ^^

I can't wait for the delicious, delicious G2 colors. Purple camo makes everything better.

I like that tan and purple color on Swindle. I would love to get all three sets and do a mix and match of them.

Call me a heretic, but I'm not totally into combiners. But I am impressed that Bruticus is so poseable despite his size.

I was thinking about maybe getting Brawl because I liked his design in War for Cybertron, but his toy differs in a few ways from his In Game model to work as a limb for Bruticus, and that makes him rather uninteresting for me.

Yes, this. I suspect that when the decision to go with bright, diverse colors was made, someone realized that they could work in that homage. The best part being that Swindle and Brawl are still pretty game accurate and Onslaught's colors are MORE game-accurate to his robot mode.

This IS the design team that managed to make the Wreckers retools a double homage to the RiD Decepticons. I wouldn't put secondary homages past them.
