As a young man with Asperger Syndrome, the original film shaped my outlook on myself, fiction, life, mortality, and morality in ways I couldn’t have dreamed. (Although it was Early Edition that gave me an appreciation for the art of Fisher Stevens.)
I just hope it doesn’t end up like Kevin James’ Zookeeper, with Johnny Five as the wacky guy who gives awesome advice. Or ALF. (You could see the desperation on the actors’ faces by the second episode of season one.)
I think the last time they talked either he was being told not to talk to Robin when she got home, or he was calling to tell her that Robin needed her. <__>
Stephanie did always sort of annoy me in the film, but in the way I expected sever ‘average girl’ female leads to annoy me in 80s films, which was really to the point of endearment.
Though the idea of a remake leads me to wonder… What would be the modern pop-cultural equivalent of three military combat droids overwritten with the personalities of the Three Stooges?
Remakes seldom reuse jokes, though when I thought about it, internet meme’s would likely be what gets used if they base it -now- instead of 1980′s. In the 1980′s, cable TV was not yet everywhere, and scrambling measures (PayTV) was easily stolen when it was. Even on Satellite dish.
If it’s based on today, the internet is certainly involved. “Need Input” , J5 probably first discovers dial-up AOL, and the movie progress as he finds better ways to get on the internet. Oh gee that would be such a boring movie, better make sure that NOVA shows up every time he does.
I wonder if Johnny 5 will connect to the internet, get trapped on tv tropes, and ultimately hobble away from it spouting memes and complaining about what could have been.
Or he could go totally Mike and refuse to fire the nuke. keep it armed and ready to go, but just absolutely refuse to end you pathetic monkey lookin freaks.
Of course, doing so while banging your mom and eating nachitos would just be icing on the cake.
First the Smurfs now Short Circuit. It’s like everyone from the 80′s is reliving their childhood through rehashing their favorite movies. Can’t Hollywood make anything original?
One thing I actually genuinely would like to see is a Gargoyles movie.
Most of these shows are changed beyond recognition into crap when adapted for the big screen, but in the studios’ defense, most of them HAD to change to even be considered movie material. I mean how the hell was a Smurfs movie SUPPOSED to work? It never could.
But Gargoyles was cinematic enough already, that I think a fairly straightforward adaptation would make a fine movie. The first five episodes, for instance, which tell a single story.
Live Action would be cool, but my preference would be all CGI. You know that’s how they’d do the Gargoyles themselves anyway, and this way they would match the rest of the world and not look fake. Also, you could have the original actors provide the voices.
Yeah, I’m kinda like Ultra-Car. “Make it just like the original – but better!”. C’mon Disney, cash in one one of the properties you haven’t ruined yet!
Wow, I had totally forgotten about that show, and I was a big fan. And somebody else also recently mentioned Samurai Pizza Cats, another gem I forgot about. To the internet!
The best part about checking out the comic early in the morning is you do not have quite so many comment to read though. Though that kind of pales in comparison to the fact that I’m getting married tomorrow. Go Me!
But it’d be better if you were actually late for the wedding in order to post this comment.
“First! Haha, I got first comment! But shoot, I have to go. They’ve played the Wedding March three times now, and I think the father of the bride went out to his car to fetch a shotgun.
At first, I thought she was illustrating Finger Banging. She wanted to bang Stephanie so damn hard and the Car didn’t “get” it. So she did the whole movement and the “you don’t get what I’m saying” bit.
Then I realised She was just gesturing the distance between herself and the car, and how they can’t “talk”.
I got it in the end, but… yeah. The strip was completely different for a moment there.
It’s been so long since I saw Short Circuit I can’t remember anything about it.
Well, other than one scene of 5 reading through books really fast and me being jealous of that ability.
Actually, this is the first time I’ve enjoyed Ultracar & Leslie. There should be more chats like this, not less.
UC has always been too much of an a stupid jerk, for me to really enjoy him. Or he’s been a prop.
Leslie also has been a bit of a prop (mostly as a background cash register operator), or otherwise been not much more than a sounding board. I didn’t dislike her, just never saw much entertainment in her character.
For some reason, having these characters together works. Maybe because the original cast upstages them?
Who exactly are they doing this remake for? The original Short Circuit is hardly a cult classic and the current generation wants their robots to look like Tricia Helfer and Summer Glau.
Marmaduke was hardly a cult classic either. It’s a known property with enough goodwill that it wouldn’t actively scare people away from theaters, and at the end of the day that’s all Hollywood wants.
I know this is days late, but after doing a little reading, it appears that the remake was going to be directed by Steve Carr and he was making the story change to a boy from a broken home, yada yada. What was announced a few days ago was that it will be directed by Tim Hill instead.
Will changing the director like this change the plot?
Also, apparently I need to rewatch the old film if Ultracar is even on the same planet of a fair critique.
Allow me to say I LIKED Stephanie Speck in this film.
…And I was strangely aroused by the dance scene with Johnny. ._.
As a young man with Asperger Syndrome, the original film shaped my outlook on myself, fiction, life, mortality, and morality in ways I couldn’t have dreamed. (Although it was Early Edition that gave me an appreciation for the art of Fisher Stevens.)

It could only have been hotter if Johnny was a lady bot.
I do like my lesbians.
Are you sure “he’s” not? The voice was ambiguous, and there seems to be a lack of any attempt to make him look male.
Jonni 5, maybe.
I’m about to be real unpopular.
I hate this friggin’ movie. I hate the robot, I hate the people, I hate the premise. I’ve hated it since I was a little kid.
Think I’m going to hell for that?
If not, I could tell you my thoughts on E.T.. Then I will be, I’ll bet
I would like your opinion on ET. I suspect it is similar to my fiance’s.
Wait… they used to talk to each other before?
No, they didn’t, because of things like this.
Yeah, the last time they talk I think Ultra Car hit Leslie with pie, I think.
I think the last time they talked either he was being told not to talk to Robin when she got home, or he was calling to tell her that Robin needed her. <__>
I thought that was Roz.
As interested as I am in new Short Circuit, all my news on it so far has come from this site.
Often I agree with UltraCar on human culture.
In this case, he is wrong. It’s Ally Sheedy. He’s just wrong. Ally Sheedy was always hot, even (especially?) when she plays crazy chicks.
I am 32, she is 49, and I might still consider hitting that.
Stephanie did always sort of annoy me in the film, but in the way I expected sever ‘average girl’ female leads to annoy me in 80s films, which was really to the point of endearment.

Still the Three Stooges! It’s not like they were current in 1984.
Fair point.

I Agree.. I just don’t know who WITH, yet.
I feel the need to point out how great it is that she’s going for a WALK with the CAR.
If we’re talking sweet remakes, Fright Night is gonna be where it’s AT.
Here’s hoping the new Johnny 5 is as badass as the original one in the 2nd film.
I wonder if Johnny 5 will connect to the internet, get trapped on tv tropes, and ultimately hobble away from it spouting memes and complaining about what could have been.
Or worse, he discovers 4chan.
We’d be doomed. Remember that S.A.I.N.T. stands for “Strategic Artificially Intelligent Nuclear Transport”.
If a robot armed with a nuke discovers 4chan, he’ll no doubt decide that humanity needs to be exterminated for its own good. And he’ll have a point!
4chan. The only way to win is not to play.
Or he could go totally Mike and refuse to fire the nuke. keep it armed and ready to go, but just absolutely refuse to end you pathetic monkey lookin freaks.
Of course, doing so while banging your mom and eating nachitos would just be icing on the cake.
I thought Wall-E was the Short Circuit remake?
Lol!
You may have already seen this, given Willis is a friend of Joel’s, but still – seems relevant:

First the Smurfs now Short Circuit. It’s like everyone from the 80′s is reliving their childhood through rehashing their favorite movies. Can’t Hollywood make anything original?
Soon, they will be rehashing the 90s. Expect to see live action Biker Mice From Mars.
….I’d actually pay to see that.
I will boycott it if they ever cast Megan Fox as Charlie.
One thing I actually genuinely would like to see is a Gargoyles movie.

Crazily, Disney has a “Gargoyles” movie in development that has NOTHING to do with the cartoon >_<
Frankly, Id have been happy if they just didnt cancel the recent comic series of it.
Wow, I had totally forgotten about that show, and I was a big fan. And somebody else also recently mentioned Samurai Pizza Cats, another gem I forgot about. To the internet!

Congratulations!
I bet if you had gotten first it would compare!
Nah, just kidding! Congratulations!
Thanks Guys. Gonna try to get to sleep. Don’t know if I will though.
Go you!
And Congratulations!

Congrats!
But it’d be better if you were actually late for the wedding in order to post this comment.
“First! Haha, I got first comment! But shoot, I have to go. They’ve played the Wedding March three times now, and I think the father of the bride went out to his car to fetch a shotgun.
But still, First!”
Congratulations, man. Hope you have a great life as a husband and a father.
See that gesture Leslie does at the end? I thought she was doing something entirely different for a minute and was VERY confused… Haha!
If you mean the wanker gesture, then you weren’t the only one.
This strip is confusing.
At first, I thought she was illustrating Finger Banging. She wanted to bang Stephanie so damn hard and the Car didn’t “get” it. So she did the whole movement and the “you don’t get what I’m saying” bit.

Well, other than one scene of 5 reading through books really fast and me being jealous of that ability.
The only thing I remember is J-5 going on and on about how Ally’s got ‘nice software’.
Actually, this is the first time I’ve enjoyed Ultracar & Leslie. There should be more chats like this, not less.
UC has always been too much of an a stupid jerk, for me to really enjoy him. Or he’s been a prop.

Maybe there will be a hot chick in the “troubled family.” Maybe a hot daughter with daddy issues. Johnny-5 could be getting laid this time.
Only if Johnny-5 is how Data put it, ‘fully functional’.
Who exactly are they doing this remake for? The original Short Circuit is hardly a cult classic and the current generation wants their robots to look like Tricia Helfer and Summer Glau.
I thought something along the lines of either a Veritech or a police bomb-disposal-bot “I am not expendable”
WALL-E grossed at over half a billion dollars. I think people still like cute robots.
Marmaduke was hardly a cult classic either. It’s a known property with enough goodwill that it wouldn’t actively scare people away from theaters, and at the end of the day that’s all Hollywood wants.
I, like many other otaku would like their cute robots to look more like Vocaloids. ^_^
Dana Carvey was the best Church Lady ever.
Really? Not that difficult when there weren’t a whole lot to pick from, pretty small pool there.
All I know is this remake had better have more Los Locos.
Ultracar! We need more Ultracar! XD
see this is one of those pages that gives Leslie a one track mind like dealy.
I know this is days late, but after doing a little reading, it appears that the remake was going to be directed by Steve Carr and he was making the story change to a boy from a broken home, yada yada. What was announced a few days ago was that it will be directed by Tim Hill instead.

Short Circuit 2 was far superior anyway.
