We actually have t-shirts sold at my college that say ‘free hugs’ on them. And we get a new design each semester.

Considering any kind of soliciting sign was banned explicitly to stop this sort of thing, I’m surprised they saw even 10. I don’t think I saw any at all this year, come to think of it, though it’s certainly been bad in the past.
Things got pretty bad at Otakon for a few years there — some of the signs went beyond “free hugs” and involved money or kissing. They stamped down hard on it with the NO SOLICITING rule that a lot of cons are adapting to put a stop to this, and justifiably, since depending on the sign or interpretation, it’s nearly always soliciting a minor. Hooray!
Anime North did the same thing years back as part and parcel of the no-glomping rule and bodyguards for the special guests. That was instituted due to injuries sustained by one of the more popular voice actors that year.
At Anime North 2009 I started walking around with a “Free Bukkake” sign, people were oddly enough less creeped out by it than the Free Hugs mob- Favourite reaction was when a elderly Japanese man walked by, read the sign & nearly fell over from laughing so hard.
One of the cons in my area actually managed to avoid this problem by marking off a certain area as a “Glomp Circle” No glomping related injuries or “free hugs” solicitation signs.
The problem, as I recall it, was not only that people were wearing the signs, but that they were actively approaching and harassing other congoers (unsurprisingly, usually male congoers approaching females) to give them said hugs.
Are they making a comeback? I recall the Summer of Infinite Signs at Otakon a few years back, after which they had to ban them.
Always wondered whatever happened to Galasso and Faz.

Knowing Faz, that would probably be considered a win, too, if it involves being locked up long enough in the right kind of place.
I would pay money to see it. I’ve always been creeped out by those guys.
(Not helped by one taking my frozen look of vague horror / confusion as an invitation to hug me at one con.)

But downgrading his schtick from “Starscream-esque power-plays and workplace harassment” to “desperate pleading for shreds of kindness and dignity” has just about done it.
I hated those Free Hugs people hanging outside the train station.

I have to say, from what we’ve seen of Faz’s real father, Galasso is a marked improvement.
This is just a power play by Faz to get Galasso to declare that Faz is his heir and must sire an offspring with Conquest in order to continue the bloodline.
Is it just me, or does Faz look smaller and even more odd than he used to?
yeah. i was thinking his head looked a lot bigger than usual. maybe it’s because i just haven’t seen him in so long.

Five people felt sorry for Faz after reading this strip. I’m not one of them.
Four-and-a-half. Note that I didn’t feel sorry enough to want to hug him. Because he’d almost certainly make a sleazy and disgusting comment if I did and then I would have to restrain the urge to hurt him.
Not to mention that there’s a fifty/fifty chance he’d start staling you.

I can’t remember from which comic it was … oh right it was “The Devil’s #######” …. and one character was more than willing to give hugs when asked …. Sasquatch …..
Now that is something for a Faz to encounter.

I enjoyed Faz much more back in the day when he was smarter, evil:er and not so terribly small.

There were so many of those at ConnectiCon this year! Every other kid was wearing a damn sign! Mostly I stayed behind the Johnny Wander table so I was unaffected but DAMN, there were so many of them!
That sign is only acceptable as part of a suicide bomber costume.

(You’d think they’d back away from the staff member with the almost-scowl on his face, but nooooo, they just decide that means he needs “-More- hugs!” bloody teenagers… =P)
Faz has gone from annoying and inviting of pain to just plain pa-#*$&ing-thetic. How is it that he is STILL so pathetic. Hasn’t he at least gotten SOME brain, some self reliance? Can’t he learn how to grow up somehow? I mean he has to be at least 20 by now. He has a steady job (more or less), and I’m sure he has to have something outside of shortpacked.
How is it that he’s still so… reliant on the people of Shortpacked when it’s so obvious they all utterly reject him?
Delusion can be a powerful force.
I’ve actually know several people in the work place that would fit most of Faz’ behaviors, including the delusion that despite all their back-stabbing, slander, and sexual harassment, that everyone in the work area still thinks they’re swell people and great workers.
Because he’s a fictional character in a comic…
And really, I don’t mean for that to come-off mean-spirited, it just seems like people in these comment threads are SO attached to the characters. You’d think that they were all real people, and not the medium to deliver punchlines and adorable artwork.
Wait, this strip is based on _reality_? Real people actually really do wear these signs, even when they’re not imaginary people specifically designed to be mockeries of humanity?
My opinion of my race has just gone down a notch. _Another_ one.
They do. Mostly at conventions. Sometimes, they charge a dollar, but those are usually teenagers that are trying to -not- bug their parents for things they want, and would rather pay for it themselves. Saw a 13 year old girl at my first convention actually rack up a nice little amount that way – didn’t hurt that she was a real sweetheart, so people -wanted- the hugs.
The “Free Hugs” signage started out as a hippie thing, I think. It migrated to comic book and anime cons about ten years ago?
I think it was the Open Source Boob Project signs that started getting them banned, though.
