If I ever have kids, that’s how they’ll get praise from me, yo!
Hell the series and movies is just one huge advertisement for child neglect, ignore your child enough and he too can one day pilot a giant robot. It’s how I plan to (not) raise my child.
I dunno. They make it pretty clear that this method of child-rearing is intended for apocalyptic use only.
Thus making you child the most important person in human history, I stand by my choice.
Glad to hear your like like the fools who turn a blind eye to child abuse.
sorry i meant not like the fools
Between this and Jeph’s “Shut up Shinji,” I’m gonna have to re-watch all of Evangelion tonight.
Those same two factors have finally motivated me to finish the series. Only ever watched the first twenty episodes.
Oh, the last few episodes are the best! They really tie the whole series together.
Ugh.. the last few episodes are the reason I have no respect for Evangelion at all. They went for a philosophy ploy with one of the most bankrupt philosophies every conceived (solipsism).
I liked the ending. Oh, it didn’t do shit for the story, no doubt, but I thought it was supposed to be all about Shinji’s character development anyway.
Wait, I haven’t seen Eva, but how is solopsism bankrupt? It could easily be seen as a cop-out, but that’s not necessarily the case.
You’re a terrible person and this made me laugh.
And if you find the show too grim to watch with your kids, don’t worry! End of Evangelion is much more family friendly!
Didn’t FOX Kids air Evangelion about ten or so years ago? Like, after Digimon? Man, I wish I cared enough to watch the whole series back THEN. Did they just not even skim the series before letting it be aired or something? haha
That was Escaflowne. Evangelion is definitely not Fox Kids material.
And they still couldn’t stop themselves from chopping it to hell and changing the soundtrack. Sheesh >.<
Ugh! I refuse to watch any more Evangelion after the End of Evangelion movie. I somehow made it through the entire movie, but the utter hopelessness of that movie made me swear off the entire franchise. I have read a couple of Evangelion fanfic in the years since but have stayed away from the anime, including the 2.0 version. (It has something to do with watching Wedding Peach in the Chicago area, driving a couple of hours to my home anime club, then seeing End of Evangelion. UGH!)
Seriously. I tell people that Eva is the best series EVAR, just so they can share in my confusion and pain.
It reminds me of the summary of Evangelion. It’s the only knowledge I really have of the series. It consists of the following:
“Shinji, you suck! Get in the robot.”
“Shinji, you suck! Get in the robot.”
“Shinji, you suck! Rei, get in the robot.”
“Shinji, you suck, but Rei’s dead. Get back in the robot.”
for the same reason i’m rewatching rebuild of evangelion (b/c i dont have the television series T.T) and i love that when shinji and asuka are in bed together she says “shut up, stupid shinji” …or at least in japanese
shinji looks alot like tetsuo in the third panel.
I’ve never actually seen anyone say, “Knucks,” when doing the brofist, but it just makes the whole joke much more surreal and funny.
one of my coworkers says that about three times a day. i used to just put a finger on his fist (i work w/food, i don’t like touching ppl while working), but lately its gotten so annoying i just say ‘no.’
Well, ya know … one of these times, just “slip” and “knucks” him in the nose. That’ll learn him.
there’s a kid at my church who asks people to give him knucks… but he’s two so i don’t think it counts.
Nice. And in the relaunch the characters are more balanced, but that not saying much
I sense a parallel…
i’ve got to say you recreated the art style quite well. Good job!
Does anyone else get blown away/freaked out everytime Willis does an art shift?
I can’t say that I freak out, but I am constantly impressed when I see a change in art. It throws us for a loop, which is a good thing in this case.
For a moment, I thought I’d clicked on the wrong webcomic.
Love the art shift! The strip would be just as funny if it was in your usual style, but going that extra mile makes this strip seem special.
This strip perfectly reflects the storyline title.
hahahaha so it does
Haha, I now understand this completely.
I came here to post this. Good job!
Neon Genesis Brovangelion.
Yeah the art shift is fantastic. I wonder how much extra time this strip took?
I dunno the actual time, but it was a lot longer than usual.
The time you took was worth it– fantastic art, especially the last two panels.
Agreed, well done sir!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh my ribs. I could not wish for this to be canon for the series any more than I already do.
Hehehehe, Nobody ever spells Ousukas name the same way. My DVD set spells it with an ‘Ou’ instead of ‘A’… I think. Just got “You are (not) Alone”, and “You may (not) Advance”. I feel kinda like a nerd.
I’ve never seen Asuka spelled any other way, and I’ve consumed a buttload of Eva fiction. Now, the spelling of Soryu/Sohryu, on the other hand…
and they solved that little issue with the name Shikinami…
And followed in their battleship naming theme lol
I’d spell it (in Engish, anyway) as Shoryu…
Except that’d be a different name. The issue is how to spell the long “o” sound. I doesn’t start with a “sh”.
There are standard systems of romanizing Japanese. “Modified Hepburn” is the one usually used in the English-speaking world. Sometimes people ju wing it, though, which I suspect is how “Sohryu” happened, since none of the standard systems would do that.
I’m nervous as to the concept of Evangelion fanfiction being consumed by the butt-load…it’s not a pleasant visual.
Pics or it didn’t happen.
Oh, Shinji, you nutty nut nut.
I liked you better when you were Simon and you drilled for great justice. But then again, that’s because you had someone supporting you there instead of suicidal German redhead who randomly kisses you and then lets you look down her shirt while she sleeps.
The best part is, just look at Shinji’s hands. They are all torn up from his fight with that Angel, he couldn’t fist-bump Gendo in that state no matter how much he did. That just makes me think he’s an even bigger dick than before…
I missed that! Haha! Awesome!
Didn’t even think about that, and I saw this movie. Great. xD
This is so much win, there is no word for it in any human tongue.
I keep waiting/dreading for the day that the live-action movie comes out, if it ever gets off the drawing board. I can see Hollywood ruining NGE so hard, the resulting vacuum of suck would collapse the universe.
…much like what I hear they’re doing to Akira…
I almost spit on my monitor upon first seeing this. Props.
You continue to like good things. Congratulations on your taste. Or should I be saying, “Willis, Knucks.”
It’s been a while since I saw an eva joke, and the art looks fantastic
The song that started playing (on random) while I was reading this:
Fitting? Very much so, says I.
why is this so funny to me dgfh
FINALLY CAUGHT UP!
Gendo wasn’t even THAT affectionate to shinji, he was much more loving of the 13 year old angel hybrid clone of his wife that his son was in love with (no really)
Family reunions in that universe can be soooo awkward…
David, all I can say about this hillarious strip is:
Seriously, its awesome.
I don’t really get it, but I still chuckled.
Ha ha ha, oh Evangelion. I stopped liking you in… 1998, I think. And yet here you are again, dressed up in new rags, trying to impress everybody but still being the same old garbage.
The best thing is to play a SRW game that includes Eva garbage in it, and never use the pilots or units outside of the stages that force you to use them. And use someone Boss Borot or Fa instead. Burn!
There always has to be “that one guy” doesn’t there?
I tried watching EVA, I really did. I gave up and watched FLCL instead.
All I know about the revamped remake is that it’s supposed to be “Evangelion Stays On Its Meds”
Do, or Do not. There is no try.
That’s pretty close, but a fuller description would be “Evangelion Stays On Its Meds But Then Goes Crazy In A Different Way”.
FLCL: I approve.
Evangelion: Never saw. I hear it’s good, though. GAH, CURSE YOU, TIMESTREAM. I DEMAND YOU GIVE ME MORE TIME TO DO FRIVOLOUS THINGS.
I loved NGE when I first watched it, but I’m not sure I could ever go through that epic mindfuck again. And the animated movie that fittingly ended the series was such a bleak film that ironically it was the perfect ending to such a dark series.
On a brighter note, perfect parody here. Loved it.
I approve on SO MANY LEVELS. <3 Eva!
I actually got into Eva after I saw some Gundam. My conclusion is that for me it is not enough to have giant robots fighting one another. I require plots that have some sense of coherence. Also, it helps if I’m even slightly emotionally invested in the well-being of any of the characters. Even one likable protoganist does wonders for a series.
Misato is totally likeable. And Rei is pretty likeable if you ignore “what” she is and just focus on “who” she tries to become.
I totally preordered this! The rebuild of Evangelion, while very different from the original is less like a rewrite. Most of the events that happened in the TV shows, are still there, but Mari is new, Model 6 being built by Seele on the moon is new, the Beastial mode used by Mari is new, Provisional Model 5 was new; the graphics are way, way better, the characters feel…less tortured souls, and more like characters with issues we can relate to. The only thing that bugs me is the recycled musical score from Kare Kano. It’s still good and brings back a lot of good memories, but I feel they could have done better with the music. Oh yeah, spoiler alert, Rei does (not) become a doll to be replaced.
I think you mean Yoko Kanno.
And the only way they could have done better is if she did merged with Gackt and Joe Higashi. wait, that’s the fatal fury character…sorry, I meant the Princess Mononoke composer Joe Hisaishi.
In any case Yoko is a freakin genius…though the very idea of remaking Eva sounds scary to me. I’ll probably check it out at some point, though.
HA! Gendo would still slap him after that, too. It’s part of the approval process.
I’ve never watched those Evangelion animes, so the context of the strip is lost on me, but the artwork is great.
Gendo Ikari is like Batman, he’s Comedy Gold.
I agreed!: http://twitter.com/#!/Shortpacked/status/56353678675808256
That is all.
For… The… Win…
That is a fun one too. It’s Gendo! feels more appropriate here though, especially given it’s context: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPtFxvtfH9I 6:17-8:11.
Browsing those vids, I came across the “Congratulations” bit. WTF is up with that?? Its one of the creepiest (in a Paranoia Agent kind of way) vids I’ve seen in a while. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDajqW561KM&feature=related
Haha, love this.
Exceptional job with this strip, Willis. It seems like the two times you’ve done something with Evangelion, it’s of an exceptional quality. (Er, not that the rest of your strips aren’t great.)
This is fucking beautiful. Evangelion 2.0 was possibly the greatest anime movie ever created.
I really liked it, but I dunno if I’d go that far.
Shinji would have a heart attack in the film if Gendo showed anywhere near that much love to him in the film or TV series.
Asuka is talking out of her ass in the first panel.
She tends to do that anyway, though. It’s just more obvious in comic format.
Damnit, i was pre-empted.
You need to show this strip to Spike Spencer. Albeit he’d get a kick out of it. Tiffany Grant even.
What’s “albeit” doing in that sentence?
I don’t know what it means. I just see it used a lot in the form of “I’ll bet” Live and learn.
That’s…not what it means. At all. It means “although”, “even if”, or “allowing for the fact”. As in: “a pleasant, albeit brief, vacation”.
Oh god, if this had actually happened it would have made the show that much more creepy.
OK, this was awesome.
FATHER OF THE YEAR.
