Part of the reason I’m hesitant to collect Eva stuff in general is that nobody ever even makes any damn Shinjis, much less Gendo. Stupid teenage girls!
(Gendo, like Batman, is comedy gold.)

Your link is 403′d. Here’s a working one.
Why is that anyway? Japanese toylines seem to be far less inclined to make all the characters from any given series than American lines. If anything I’d have thought that Japanese otaku would be more likely to buy like completionists than American fanboys.
And damn every Final Fantasy line for always stopping just short of making the whole party. This isn’t a Simpsons scale cast here; It’s like 6 guys!
Japanese otaku are also more likely to buy figures primarily for onanistic purposes.
I firmly refuse to look up the definition for that word.
Oh my goodness YES, this is THE thing that bothers me about Gainax. The insane nonsensical plots, massive budget cuts, trolling, and everything else, I couldn’t care less about. But dammit, why are they making figures of that bridge bunny girl with the short hair before anything of the protagonist and his awesome dad?
They have made some Shinji stuff, but it’s, without exception, horrible.
Crap. I’m torn between agreeing wholeheartedly with you and eagerly asking “They’re doing a Maya figure? ROCK!”
Yeah, really! Who do I have to kill to get a Kamina, Simon, or Kittan figure from TTGL? But expecially NGE man, that show has been around since the mid-90′s and we still haven’t seen a single action figure of the main character? Lame, dude, lame.
Japanese otaku largely tend to stick with a favorite character and by tens of dozens of different items of merchandise for that one character, prompting companies to make the same character again and again. Popularity also plays a huge role in what they make, and the otaku community tends to find favorites with the same characters, rather than different ones.
David, no love for Kaworu? That fucker has a quite the collection of figures. Dunno about a Revoltech/figma though.
I dunno if “buying a bunch of their favorite character” is really an otaku-only phenomenon. Witness the countless variations of Batmen, Spider-Men, and Iron Men you can buy in America.
What’s different is that in America, what sells is the main character, while in Japan, what sells is the harem of hot chicks the main character wishes he could bone. (This is an extreme simplification of course, and has a lot more to do with age group than geographic location…)
Revoltech is actually getting to be pretty balanced between male and female toys. Hokuto No Ken balances out Queen’s Blade, for example. Regardless though, they’ll go with the easy sales, just like anyone else.
I have visions of Revoltech Gendo coming with three identical, expressionless faces.
and two sets of hands, folded and steepled.
Pardon my French, but why do you even make strips for that bunch of festering cunts over there? All I see when I go over every time is a bunch of fucking aspies making frowny faces as hard as they can in the comments
It’s the internet. You’re always going to get a bunch of cranky crybabies that are never happy with anything ever and are just looking to bitch about things.
I try not to read the comments on those strips because it usually makes my brain sad.
The loudest people are kind of jerks, but that’s just ‘cuz the loudest people are gonna be jerks anywhere. I’m sure there’s lots of very nice folks who read my strips there who don’t pipe up every week to remind everyone they exist.
That said, the TNI strips are ending at #250. This has nothing to do with reader comments, obviously, but everything to do with my love of round numbers and my desire to spend my time doing other, newer things.
Aww, I really like them, even though I almost never actually know what you’re talking about. They’re still funny! BUT! I also like the sound of you doing other things you like better, so I’ll probably get over it.
I think the only advantage the TNI/SP! format had was its “economy”. Some jokes just work better in a strip than they do in a whole page, as well as vice versa.
While I’ll be sorry to see it leave I know it’ll eventually improve Shortpacked! as a whole to take this move.
Huh, I figured you only did the TNI comics because they were paying you or something…
They are a bunch of Fjord’s, aren’t’ they?
I’m waiting for a Revoltech Fujiko to go with my Lupin III and Jigen.
Meanwhile in Japan, some toy designers are thinking “You know what those Americans need to do? They need to add a character to one of their superhero properties based on David Koresh.”
I’m not an EVA fan myself but I have heard the concept that Gendo is based directly on the real-life Yukio Mishima.
Hey, man. You made an error here that pretty much kills the joke for anyone familiar with Japanese toylines. The line that focuses on teenage girls (and just so happens to have the Eva license) is Figma, not Revoltech. Revoltech would actually be far more likely to make a Gendo, although they mainly focus on mecha, movie monsters, and dynamic characters like the Sengoku Basara cast.
Tl;dr, do some research next time.
So this Revoltech Asuka figure that I own is entirely my imagination, then. As is the fact that they made several of her, Rei, and Mari, but no Shinji, despite him being the main character.
Hmm.
Yeah, uh, that’s the Fraulein subseries. There’s like 10 of them.
Meanwhile there are literally over 100 robots and monsters made in the MAIN line, plus the Sci-Fi line.
You’re thinking of figma. The common joke of “They only make girls” is figma. Which is also wrong, but it’s LESS wrong than this.
Yes, but in the realm of Evangelion merch, there’s buttloads of merchandise regarding the girls, but close to zero merchandise of Shinji.
You’re trying very hard to make the comic wrong, and I commend you for your efforts.
Yes but you’re not generalizing Evangelion merchandise, you’re targeting a specific toy line, Revoltech. You’re singling them out as if they are the only toy line in japan to do this. If you’re going to blame someone, blame Gainax marketing for only focusing on the females. Max Factory’s figma line has also only focused on the Eva girl. So has the Microman line from Takara. Let’s count the number of Alter Shinji statues there are, oh wait there are none.
Kaiyodo’s Revoltech line is by no means the best japanese toy line out there, but hell I give them credit for being the most diverse one. So this comic makes it seem like Kaiyodo would never do male characters, because all they work on is 14 year old girls, which is incredibly unfair to them.
I’m singling out Revoltech because they’re known for hyper-poseable figures, which is pretty damn important to the principle joke of “Gendo doing anything other than sit and clasp his hands together is comedy gold.”
I’m sorry I gravely insulted Revoltech. I hope they can recover from this.
Asuka’s had three Revoltechs, while Rei and Mari have two each. To compare, Units 00 and 02 have had at least five each, while EVA-01′s had at least nine in the Revoltech line alone. To compare, the only Evangelion Figmas are a Rei, an Asuka, and a Mari. Given that the Revoltech line frequently makes such non-moe things as Professor Layton and the Sengoku Basara dudes (samurai on crack, fuckyeah), it doesn’t make too much sense.
Anyway, I get the intent of the comic was for the action-Gendo poses. I agree with you that a Figma/Revoltech/S.H. Figuarts/whatever Gendo would be wonderful for all the silly poses. But the dialogue combined with the placement of the dialogue makes it sound like the joke’s supposed to be within the dialogue rather than the image, which makes the comic look like a poorly-researched jab at the toylines.
Anyway, it’s pretty hopeless to debate this, as you’re just gonna get butthurt and make a smarmy reply like you’ve done to everyone else. I’m just giving a suggestion here; the action-Gendo joke had a lot of potential, but the poorly-researched dialogue placed where a punchline is usually found completely kills the comic.
You forget that the EVAs contain the souls of dead moms, so they’re technically female.
Personally I thought the joke isn’t what’s said the final panel, but rather the absurdity of seeing Gendo in the standard sexy and/or action poses that Revoltech figures are always photographed in. The third panel dialogue appears to be there just to define what the hell we were just looking at.
You are wise.
The joke is about the general tendencies of Evangelion merchandise, not the general tendencies of Revoltech.
For some reason, Gendo Ikari tends to rearrange itself in my brain as Hikaru Genji. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HikaruGenjiPlan) From what I know of Eva’s plot, specifically Rei’s origin, that’s actually not too far off.
And I just realized I’ve been misremembering the name of that trope.
We need this. Now.
I know it is possible to get Gendo merch, though it’s fairly rare. Tends to be more along the lines of trading figures than action figures or large figures. From memory, there’s Gendo figures in the Eva Portraits 5 trading figure set, and the Petit Eva Gurashi Genesis 03 set. I know there’s one in one of the Gatcha’s as well, though which set specifically escapes me right now.
I love how butthurt some people are getting over a simple joke.
As if anyone’s jokes, ANYWHERE, are somehow required to be technically accurate.
Here’s a hint, you herpy derps.
The guy who said “take my wife… please” didn’t actually want a divorce.
The guy who said “why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?” didn’t actually have a problem with the nomenclature.
And the guy who said “a homeless guy came up to me and said ‘I haven’t had a bite for days,’ so I bit him” wasn’t actually a cannibal.
Now you’ve got me thinking about rule 63 jailbait Gendo.. DAMN YOU. oh..
And this, THIS is why I decided to dissociate from all fanboy culture. This being the comments. The comic amused me. And I’ve seen about 12 seconds of any NGE.
While a super Poseable Gendo would be awesome (and would warrant a purchase) I’m still waiting for more Misato merch! She’s better looking and more interesting than the younger girls, and also ducks the “otaku are pedophiles” stigma by being an adult!
Yeah but the Japanese audience seems to only want their schoolgirl toys and very little else.
Ok, some robots and giant monsters too, but for human figures? Mostly female and mostly underaged.
Just look at Eva’s fan audience and what they want.
Misato owns. Her idea of a healthy breakfast is a six pack and some cup ramen. That’s a LADY right there.
There isn’t even a ton of stuff for her, its mostly Rei and Asuka crap.
If Revoltech had done all 3 main leads of Gurren Lagann as figures I would have bought them. Nope. Just Yoko. And other companies also doing Yoko.
Sheet, I was lucky to find a cheapie model of the King Kittan, the greatest moon face giant robot ever.
Just go look at places like Tomopop. What are almost all the figures? Girlie.
Willis’ comic was all too true.
Especially that a Gendo in silly poses would be AWESOME.
