The fandom kinda freaked out when this guy suddenly and magically, without fanfare, appeared in Toys”R”Uses and Walmarts. What? A Transformers 3 toy? That has to be a mistake! And how did we let it slip past our insanely focused warning systems?
It’s not something I would pick up normally, but it is a “preview” toy months in advance, and I kind of have an empty blog to fill, so what are you gonna do.
This is “Cyberverse Commander” Optimus Prime. That’s not really a description of the character so much as it is a description of the sizeclass. “Cyberverse” is what Hasbro’s calling the sub-Deluxe size class stuff this year. They’re building an army of little Legends class-ish toys and giving them playsets and swappable weaponry. “Commander” means that Optimus is one of the larger toys. Price-wise and mass-wise, he’s kind of a Scout, but not quite. He feels about 90% of a Scout. But he sure costs 100% of a Scout! ($7.96)
As a Commander, Optimus Prime comes with an accessory weapon. It’s a jetpack and two guns, which you can combine with him in various ways. It’s attached via the new C joint clips and rods, which is the same stuff you use to clip Jazz’s speakers everywhere. So, yeah, in theory, you could clip Prime’s tiny jetpack to a larger Generations deluxe. No promises it’ll face the right way, though. The guns have pegs that fit into C joint clips, so there’s probably some interactivity potential there, too.
Likewise with the vague new pricepoint, Optimus Prime’s complexity also falls somewhere in between the old Legends Class and Scout Class figures. The toy’s transformation feels more like a Legends Class toy, but has way more steps and parts than those allow. Legends Class toys don’t usually have balljointed hips and shoulders or bendable knees and elbows, or at least certainly not all at the same time.
There’s also a pair of 3D glasses (red/blue) included so that you can view downloadable content from the official website. Or downloadable 3D porn images from certain other websites.
So I guess, at the very least, this is an interesting look at what the cheaper half of the Dark of the Moon toyline is going to be like — tiny versions of movie characters with accessories or playsets, with transformation complexity somewhere above Legends Class toys. I’ll probably skip out on most of it, since I’m not very interested in starting a whole new scale, but this toy was a welcome diversion during the winter toy drought.

I saw it come in a couple of weeks ago at my TRU store (I work stock). Did’t bother trying to get it then cause of the street date on it.
Didn’t*
I like this new Legends size if only because I hate how all Legends are the same size. It’s like hey, maybe some of these guys could be just a smidgen taller? Oh hey, now they are!
I bought that Optimus Prime for pretty much the same reason. It’s been a while since I’ve bought a new Transformer. I also didn’t think this was such a bad toy. I was right. I really like the truck mode and transformation scheme. The jet pack and guns are nice too. They make me feel like I have a G.I. Joe toy. The robot mode is nicer than others may think. I’ve read comparisons to Fatimus Prime from Transformers Energon, but there’s nothing to that comparison. I’m actually happy with this preview Optimus Prime.
You had me at “accessories and playsets”.
As long as none of those playsets are the bridge of the Enterprise.
One of them’s the Ark. Well, the movie-verse version of the Ark.
funny thing about that ark. It sort of legitimizes something I had been considering last year: Buying Metroplex and populating him with a bunch of legends class figures. Something I always thought would be neat to do, but never got around to doing.
I’m digging the Powermaster Prime I’m getting from the bot mode. Alt mode is a definate “meh” though.
So I’m not the only one. I picked up a 2nd one to try to repaint into movie Ginrai. I think I can manage to make it different-looking enough to distinguish.
Should’ve gotten a third to repaint as BURNING JUSTICE FIRE GUTS Ginrai.
Don’t forget, you can attach Jazz’s speakers to this toy too if you want. There’s c-clips on the forearms, and the smokestacks are 3mm diameter too.
Wow… so Optimus is still carrying around and weaing pieces of Jetfire’s corpse? Does that make him kind of like a Cybertronian Buffalo Bill?
…on that note, I’m now wondering if Prime’s got Jazz’s corpse halves stored away and waiting to kill off more transformers to complete his cybertronian corpse suit
Nah, I think it’s an all-new design. In the trailer you can see that it looks different and has Prime’s blue with red flames (or was it red with blue flames?) colour scheme on the engines.
It puts the Turtle Wax on its skin or else it gets the hose again…
how long is he from bumper to bumper, and how tall in bot mode (not counting jets)?
He’s about as tall in robot mode and long in vehicle mode as a typical Scout, just skinnier. http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/DotM/Preview1 is my review, with various dimensions and scale estimates.
If you’re watching porn through reb/blue 3D glasses, you’re doing it wrong.
Wow, that toy looks like a terrible version of the character. I’ll buy it anyway though – I’m completist on precisely *one* character, and that’s the one.
And are you *still* going on about fox X-men? Wow. Hey though, By chance I was watching some special features, and noticed another character with comicy-drawn highlights and an eagle-man voice! What a coincidence! Clearly, another show that must suck terribly.
It was X-Men Evolution’s Mystique.
Man, it’s easy to get a rise outta you!
When I noticed the aforementioned characteristics of Mystique, my overwhelming emotion was glee, at the rich, sweet, calorie-laden irony. I rushed to the computer to unburden myself of the amusement and share it with the world – presumably as some unread post in the lingering prior thread, because obviously you would not be still beating this horse anymore.
But, who knew?
Its nothing for me, but little from the movies are. Something nice for the kids though.
I can’t say I have a drought. XFire Munitioner and Explorer came in along with Thunderwing, WFC Cliffjumper, Kup, and Scourge. Preordered them all months ago and waited for both things to come in.
(Not buying T Wing and Cliffy many times waiting was kind of hard.)
They join my G1 Euro Constructicons, Perceptor, Wreck Gar, Jazz, Tracks, Animated Snarl & Rodimus, Movie Bludgeon, and a couple Legends class I bought in the event I ever run a tabletop TF RPG (yeah right) in being a massive pile of unopened toys.
Ok, I just opened and transformed Blast Off and Swindle. Swindle is MAGNIFICENT. Not almost 50 dollars of greatness but I don’t exactly regret his purchase.
Do what I am doing now. Saving toys for when I need some therapy after a really bad day. Dirge and DRIFT SAMA KUN CHAN DOMO were opened around Christmas just to make me feel better.
Back in 01 I cracked open MISB/C Gobots Puzzler and 2 3 Renegade Giftpacks after a certain really bad Tuesday.
It sometimes helps ease a bad time. Makes ya feel like a kid on Christmas, or at least gives your brain some things to work out.
(I am so unsure about combining to make Colossus/Bruticus though. While I did finish the last piece of the team to go with these 2, Swindle is so awesome, and I am not sure Fansproject’s sublime plastic and paint color choices and apps go with TFCC’s little combiner who mostly looks like a giant multicolored Jolly Rancher. Which I think is pretty mind you but..)
For once, I’m actually more interested in this tiny line than I am in the main toyline. I mean, there’s some awesome in there like Shockwave and that crazy demon Laserbeak, but mostly I’m gona try and stay away (only because I’m collecting so much else these days). The little guys, though…I dunno, they seem pretty cool! I like the articulation, and I’ve always been a sucker for small toys. I was expecting them to be mostly immobile, but the articulation is impressive! I’m gona have to take a closer look at those Toy Fair pics; I think I must have skipped over these the first time.
Good job extending the legs.
This toy has a little bit of a Powermaster Prime vibe going on, at least to me.
too small. but, i guess it’s neat to get a movie character version before the movie is out.
Anyone else noticing that the blue plastic is showing stress marks almost instantly? On mine, it also seems like it’s not holding as sharp of a shape, especially around the vertical bit in front of the trailer hitch where the jetpack clips on in vehicle mode. Maybe a different plastic than usual?
Weird. The robot mode seems to have some similarities in construction to the old Powemaster Optimus Prime with how the chest seems to plug in to those side panels and the head flips up.
