I was surprised I ended up liking Damian Wayne so much. ”The bratty son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Head” isn’t really a character pitch that grabbed me. But after these past few years he’s really grown on me.
Part of that, though, I insist, is because he isn’t paired with Bruce Wayne as Batman. Batman’s cranky, Damian’s cranky… it’s not a very diverse duo. But when Dick Grayson is Batman, that’s where I saw how Damian Wayne worked as a character. Dick Grayson’s a happier, more social Batman. That’s a good foil for Damian, the little brat with a (very buried) heart of gold. But Dick doesn’t get to be Batman anymore, and after the Flashpoint reboot, Bruce is going to be Batman to Damian’s Robin. It’s nice that Damian’s staying around, but I think pairing him with his dad sort of misses the point. I hope I’m proved wrong.
But seriously, where’s my damn Dick Grayson Batman toy? I am kind of annoyed. Instead, this DC Direct Damian Wayne comes in a wave with back-from-the-dead Bruce. Dick is totally skipped over! Grargh. I snatched up Damian anyway, though, not only for myself, but because my wife thinks he’s great. Only with Dick, of course.
The toy is a standard DC Direct figure. There’s some minor articulation, a stand, and some accessories. Damian looks a little older than 11, though. I kind of wish he had an alternate head possibility with his hood over his head. I kind of like the hood over his head.
Anyway, in conclusion, this is required reading.

Your mom’s great with Dick, too. But only for a nickel.
That link was so adorable!!!
that was surprisingly funny.
Not positive, but I vaguely think I recall a Dick Grayson Batman figure being a New York Comic Con Exclusive of some sort. Might have been DC Direct, can’t recall.

This might be it. 2008, made by Mattel – if I read the post right. Not sure, but I had no idea where to find the figure, since I wasn’t sure I was remembering things correctly.
Newp. That’s just a rerelease of a DCSH Batman figure.
I’m glad to finally see Damian as Robin in toy form though! I just wish there was a swappable head with hood up…
Those letters from Damien were damn near tear-jerking.
any recommended trades with the dick batman/damian robin pair?
Each and ever trade of “Batman & Robin” by Grant Morrison.
Oh god, those letters. My heart feels sad now.
I find it kind of sad that when Bruce came back, Morrison said that Damian could never have worked as Robin with Bruce and it took a partnership with Dick to make him ‘work’ as Robin…and now Morrison’s going to be writing Bruce and Damian as Batman and Robin. 8/
Morrison’s expressed regret over the decision to pair Bruce and Damian, and said his plan was for Dick and Damian to be partners for basically forever. I don’t think ithis is his idea.
Dan Didio: He’ll leave nothing unharmed.
I’m with you Willis. When Damian was introduced, I HATED the character so much. More so when I found out he was replacing Tim Drake as Robin who still remains my favorite Robin to this day. Damian was annoying, arrogant and murderous (I mean, he DID kill a man during his first story arch)
But still, when Morrison took over the book and paired him up with Dick, I really found him to be surprisingly enjoyable of a character. He started to soften up, and his relationship with Dick became something I really loved to read about. Dick has an amazing habit of bringing out the best in people and just like he did it with Bruce, he did it with Damian too. They made a good team and I’m really going to hate not seeing them working together. I kinda wish they’d switched the book to “Nightwing and Robin” after the reboot.
“Nightwing & Robin” is an awesome idea. It is simple, obvious and doesn’t muck up what works while allowing Bruce Batman to return. This is most people end up quitting comics. Good characters and stories always get shoved aside when someone gets determined to shove their thumb into something.
Dan Didio sucks, and needs to stop resetting things in the DC Universe to be just like they were when he was a 12 year old. Some of us like the DC Universe as it’s existed from the late 90s to mid 2000s. Keep Dick as (a) Batman, and get rid of Barry Allen!
That figure looks like a 14 year old version of Damian — after a bit of a growth spurt, and the on-set of puberty. To be accurate to the last few years of comics, the figure ought to be more child-like / less teenager-ish: shorter, not as skinny, rounder in the face. And of course much more grumpy. (And yeah, a hood option would be great.)
