While some people are cheap bastards who will pirate even if paying is easy and reasonable, I like to think enough of us will pay for things to make it viable. But if they're not for sale, we can't buy them. We CAN, however, generally get pirate copies with nearly zero effort or risk. They'd probably think of that as just making it easier to pirate. That's why you don't see a lot of webcomic collections on ereaders. It's simpler to just throw the PDF on the internet and charge for it through your own webstore.
