Happy New Year! I’m in Miami.
No sooner than I get my “Challenge at Cybertron” set than I find out that it’s coming over here as “Battle in Space,” minus Galvatron. Normally, hey, who cares, but instead of Galvatron, there’s an exclusive-friggin’ comic book. An exclusive-friggin’ comic book that retroactively places Lugnut at the Battle of Autobot City during the animated 1986 Transformers film. Aw, no. I neeed that.
And so I have some nigh-identical figures. The only differences are Rodimus and Cyclonus now have Rub Signs instead of tampographed symbols. Which is actually preferable to me. I’ll ditch the old tampographed ones on eBay and keep the Rub Signed versions. Also, woo, comic. And woo, Matrix? There’s a die-cast Matrix of Leadership in here that no one can hold. Well, no Transformer in this set, anyway.
Certain rulers of Apokolips can hold it.

I could totally see having the Matrix made into a pendant.
It should be pretty easy. There’s the holes there already, because this particular Matrix mold was designed for a chain.
Yup. I got some jewelry chain from my workplace (Michaels), and rigged up a neck-chain so Galvatron (or whoever) can wear some bling.
You’re thinking small-time, this Matrix obviously belongs on a person-sized necklace.
‘Zactly. I wasn’t going to let Galvatron wear it! (I would need a Galvatron for that.)
Maybe Fluttershy, though.
Flavatron?
I’m tempted to have it incorporated into a larger piece. Then again, adding anything more than a chain or cord might distract.
It’d look better than the Ravage piece I was thinking of having done, mind.
We need pics of Darkseidimus Prime!
Oh, it’s metal? Slightly less cheesy, then. Haven’t opened mine yet.
Ooh Fun. Must…get…cyclonus…again…
Snazzy. I might hit up a Wal-Mart for these fellas; I’ve been eyeing a Cyclonus to go with my TFAnimated Shadow Blade Megatron (originally bought because he pretty, but he makes a nice ersatz Galvatron). He could go with Blackout and Oil Slick, but then I’d have to find an ol’ Beast Machines Strika…
Has Lugnut (non-Animated) hit stores yet, by the way? Did I miss that blog post?
Picked up the set at Target yesterday and just tried to have Thunderwing hold the Matrix. He can’t! His hands aren’t open enough!
Thunderwing can’t grip the sides, but he can sort of limp-wristed dangle it like some kinda magical purse

(guess who needs to dust!)
You prefer the rubsigns? Weird . . .
Rubsigns are awesome
On the Mini-Spies, they were awesome.
On minor characters, whose function is espionage, they’d be awesome.
On the Clones, they were neat. They would have been awesome if the Clones had been more ‘clone’y.
On everybody else, they’re silly.
Even as a kid, I thought it was dumb that, say, Hot Rod or Cyclonus would have rubsigns – especially when they had standard faction symbols visible in the same modes.
So…basically, what I’m saying is, the rubsigns are a pretty neat gimmick, but they stop being neat when applied to characters who don’t FIT the gimmick.

In other words, every toy in the Reveal the Shield subline. Are we really expected to believe Tracks would be caught dead with that ugly black patch on his chest?
Rubsigns are dumb.
Energon Chips are where the action is at.
Since the Matrix is the same one from the Takara New Year’s Convoy, I just plugged mine into the chest of my G1 Optimus Prime. It looks pretty great on him.
Question: How far off color wise are these two from their original releases?
They are pretty different. Much closer to the cartoon colors. I think Cyclonus looks a lot better but Rod suffers from lack of transparent windshields and a pretty bland alt mode. I’m pretty sure tfwiki and tfu have pics of both, plus if you go back through the archive I think Mr. Willis had pics from when he got the 3 pack.
Seeing as this is my third Rodimus/Hot Rod figure I’ll cut it a little slack. Putting it next to the other two it is a lot brighter shade of red, but I have no idea what shade of red the original Classics style release was, so I was curious.
However this does light a fire under my butt to track down the original “Classics” Cyclonus.
