So I snapped up this Mezco Scott Pilgrim toy at the comic book store on Wednesday. There were two to choose from: this purple-shirted Scott with the open grin and a green-shirted Scott with a determined frown. Otherwise they were identical. I chose open grin!
The figure’s okay and all. It has articulation at the neck, waist, wrists, and biceps, with shallow universal joints at the shoulders. Neither of the hands is pointing, which is kind of weird. And he comes with a guitar and his testicle-sword. It appears, when you hang his arms down at his sides best you can, that one arm is a smidge longer than the other. I figgered this must be so he can hold his sword two-fisted. Nnnnope! He definitely can’t do that. I mean, he can hold it by the hilt and by the blade, but that’s kind of weird. So, uh, maybe one arm’s longer so that it can hold the guitar better? Or it’s an optical illusion? I don’t know.
Frankly, the best thing about this toy is the friggin’ guitar. It’s amazing. It has a real leather strap and it’s sculpted and painted up real nice, and you can give it to other, better toys. That’s the real feature. Besides, getting this thing over both Scott’s big-ass head *and* one of his arms is a harrowing experience. It’s not a long strap. It can’t be, if it’s gonna rest at proper length on his torso, and, again, Scott has a huge-ass head, unlike real human beings. I’m afraid the leather strap is gonna snap.
So, yeah, I apparently just bought a $15 guitar accessory. Not the worst of things, no.

Creeeeeeeeeeeepy.
Whoa – I agree, Tanya, that face is creepy and I’d hate to run into *THAT* figure in a dark toy bin late at night! =0 Lol!
Does McFarlane Toys still have any mini Guitar Hero guitars? My Google-Fu skills are a bit rusty and all I keep finding on eBay are the action figures, the electric belt buckle air guitars, the hand-held portable games and a few “tour” picks. I was going to say they’re a lot cheaper (I picked up two at a Toys ‘R Us for $2.99 a piece when they first came out) and you could REALLY spruce up you favorite action figures with a multitude of designs, but, alas & alack…

I’m pretty sure you can still find the Guitar Hero swords at Five Below. At least the ones by me have them.
That’s a rapeface if I ever saw one.
This toy would be awesome if I had room for it in my man-cave, but alas, after the disaster that was the Haruhi Revoltech Fraulein toy I’m concerned about purchasing toys which may have fragile parts. The irony is that the Medicom toys like the Shotaro Kaneda and Motoko Kusanagi I have, tend to be expensive but really durable and playable. Think of them as the Botcon Exclusives of the anime industry.
I’ve been reading Scott Pilgrim for about two days now, I previously found the premise depressing because I was concerned society expected me to have at least one evil ex by now, but after reading the actual comic the Edgar Wright movie was based on, I’m almost glad I DON’T have evil exes like my own twin brother does sometimes. And it’s not like you can just fight a real evil ex and they turn into coins either.
I’m trying to decide whether Scott Pilgrim follows the Akira school of comics adaptation (cool-ass movie, comic goes in deeper) or the Kick-Ass variety of comics adaptation (the movie is better hands down). So far I think despite it not being nearly as epic as the Akira franchise, Scott Pilgrim is definitely more to my taste than Kick-Ass would be.
I don’t have any evil exes, either, just lesbian ones.
Me too, believe it or not.
That is not a guitar. That is a bass. You’ve purchased a $15 bass accessory.
“Bass Guitar”
This is even specified as such in the Xbox Avatar version of the item.
Testicle-sword?
His sword totally has truck nuts.
Because he had to grow a pair to earn it…?
Thanks! Silly me, if I’d consulted the Holy Oracle (i.e. Google) before asking the question, I’d have known that. I’ve even bought all the Scott Pilgrim books recently, and didn’t notice the unfortunate, er, pommel on his sword on the cover.
He was joking. They aren’t really nuts. It’s a heart. Because Scott earns the Power of Love and gets the Heart Sword.
I’m just disappointed because BBTS’s preorder page had a yellow shirt with his Winter coat in place of the purple shirted one, and I guess they never ended up making those and I really wanted the Winter coat and now I think I might have to learn how to sew so that I can make one myself but I’m pretty terrible at sewing so maybe I’ll just ask a friend.
Yeah I’m disappointed too. They were going to make that one, but just didn’t for whatever reason…so I may make one for mine. I hope they eventually make one and at least make Ramona to go along with him. I’d love an entire line of figures, but I can understand if that doesn’t happen.
Bane sure is using a lot of negatives in that sentence of his.
You can pop his head off really easily and it makes putting his guitar strap on…well, really easy. Just letting you know.
I’m a huge Scott Pilgrim fan, and a professional action figure customizer so you can bet I’m gonna customize mine. Probably paint the light shine in his hair, and his shirt a different color with probably the Smashing Pumpkins SP logo that he wore for a while.
There have been better figures, but being a Scott Pilgrim fan makes it a pretty awesome toy.
Haven’t seen those Guitar Hero guitars in a long time, but they would have been much easier on the “man I want a guitar for my toys!” front. I got a couple, then bought the rest of the wave when they went on clearance at TRU. They go great with a lot of different figures!
