Westboro Baptist Church – one of the best demonstrations that the hardest citizen test of the First Amendment is acknowledging it also protects the rights of others to espouse that which you vehemently hate.
I assume something to do with Robin’s costume making Fred Phelps uncomfortable. There’s not a person alive who spends more time thinking about gay sex.
i expect the main reason they’re picketing Comic-con is because there will be TV cameras there for them to wave that same batch of signs they’ve been using, in many cases, since their very first “protest.” It doesn’t seem to matter what they protest, as long as they get press.
Supposedly it’s protesting the “idolatry/idol worship” of it all, from what I’ve read. Yes, we love this stuff. Yes, we think it’s awesome. No, we don’t treat the characters as some sort of religious figure. Idiots.
I just wanna throw out that these are the same people who pray to crosses, have crucifixes in thier homes, who have an image of jesus christ printed on half thier stuff, and who regularly worship him as thier lord and savior.
They were protesting because “God Hates Nerds”. There were 4 of them protesting but were overshadowed by cosplayers with their own signs. My favorite being a Trekkie holding up a God Hates Jedi sign. *lmao*
If the guy holding the “All glory. Darkseid is.” sign would have been standing a little more zombie like, I would have done a spit-take. Also a big fan of “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for THE DARK KNIGHT IS BY MY SIDE”
Even if the con-goers ARE worshiping such characters as Batman, Optimus Prime, and TRON as their Holy God and Father and Lord……so what? Isn’t that what religious freedom is all about?
No, which I find interesting. They have no problem crying like spoiled brats when people try and stop them from protesting, but then they have no problem telling others what to believe.
Wait…. doesn’t their God condem Hypocrites? (by their God, i am trying to remove them completely from the normal average christians, most of whom are pretty laid back.)
Actually, this point gets brought up a lot but it’s not exactly relevant. The basic idea of their point of view is that people DO have the right to worship god in their particular extreme way, but they do NOT have the right to NOT worship god that way or do anything else forbidden by their version of god. It’s actually quite internally consistent if you ignore the fact that they can’t possibly follow their own rules perfectly.
“You have freedom! Freedom to hop on one foot and sing the National Anthem backwards while wearing green facial paint! We believe in this great freedom! If you do not take advantage of this freedom, if you stop hopping on one foot, if you stop singing, if you don’t wear green facial paint… well, then you have reached the limits of freedom and deserve to die horribly!”
well yes, but i do believe that it’s stated somewhere in the bible, that it’s the duty of any good christian to spread their faith.
or maybe i’m mixing it up with islam.. or whatever those jehova dudes are rolling.
Yeah, but the shit they’re spinning has very little to do with Christianity as taught by the New Testament. They’re basically doing mostly the stuff Christ condemned, like Pharisees but without the respect people gave the Pharisees back in the day. The New Testament talks about owning your own shit, being humble, and loving people despite what they do wrong, and converting people by the power of your good example and your sweet, sweet reason.
So, wait. You drew this before the con? You had a strip ready just in case the Westboro Baptist Church happened to show up? Man, you are Batman-levels of preptime.
Seems like cheating to me. If this was made before the con, it probably could have been a fully-colored strip with a background. It occurs to me Willis could just pretend to be on the road any week he feels like being lazy with the art.
Hmm…who has actually seen him at the convention these last few days?
How did you know! *Pulls out a big bad ass Thors Hammer* (I really, am a heathen, meaning thats the identification I use to identify my personal beliefs on the universe and life. I enjoy that you called me a Heathen. ^_^)
Adius- Any argument is internally valid. (arguablly) But when it comes down to it, this is an external issue. it involves groups that are external from themselves. And as such, it is up to the greator community (the larger internal) to rule on wether or not these ideas and pollitics are acceptable. The greator community may not welcome gays with open arms…. but they have recognized that they are human beings whose rights are covered and protected under the same rights that protect the WBB’s right to protest, and hold their own internal beliefs.
In short. They are within their right to have their own whacky beliefs. but they are not within their right to insist that the greator external must also obey their edicts. They may not be using violence (yet) to try and enforce their doctrine (their leader IS a good lawyer after all…. and i hate mentioning it, but he won a few important cases that helped eleminate segregation in his home state. No one is complete scum) but they are pursuing terror inspiration as a primary means of convincing other people. (it’s failing miserablly…. but still.)
Just my opinion tho
I think its enough that we agree that they are whackos. ^_^
I’m sorry, but your ideas runs counter to what the Constitution is set up to protect. The bill of Rights protects the rights of the individual, from that of the “greater” – mob, society, government.. doesn’t matter who makes up the greater whatever.
Each individual have the right to believe whatever they choose, and they have the freedom to voice that believe, regardless of how crazy and out on the fringe they may be. To say that the community has the right to decided what is acceptable to believe and to voice, is nothing more than saying that majority have the right to silence any minority that they deem to be “wrong”.
And again you are wrong. Their freedom of assembly and speech gives them the right to try and convince people to accept and follow their beliefs. So yes, it is well within their rights to stand on a street corner and shout that we all must follow their views. And just as they have that right, we each have the right to call them crazies, lunatics, to ignore them completely or even to stop and listen.
And are you serious, they are “pursuing terror inspiration as a primary means of convincing other people”. Really, trying to equate protesting to anything related to terror, that is just.. I really can’t.. wow, That concept perfectly allows for the criminalization of dissent or any views that the mob deems to be wrong.
They are chanting little lines and waving signs. That is all, if what they say is so insulting or offensive, then don’t listen. I’ll repeat what Old Crow said ignore them. That is the perfect response to these people.
But to say that since they vocally express their views out in public that the majority have to power to silence them is unconscionable.
The main objection to them is not that they protest things like comic-con, but that they show up at military funerals shouting that it’s a good thing the soldier died. And then sue the family if one of them gets hit. It’s still not quite illegal, shouldn’t be illegal, but that doesn’t stop people from wishing there was some way to get rid of them.
I think by “terror inspiration” shockandawe is referring to the WBC saying that the 9/11 terror attacks happened because America is too accepting of gay people.
I know “terror” is the root word of “terrorism” but that doesn’t mean that you’re automatically equating someone with terrorists when you use the word terror in describing what they’re doing. I’m pretty sure that little language connection is a direct result of how the news media talks and writes things in such terrorble ways.
To clarify, “terror” is just being really scared of anything from nuclear war to rubber balloons, “terrorism” specifically refers to making people afraid of violent death by causing violent death.
I dunno. It seems to me that counter protesting merely legitimises them. I know, I know … most say that counter protesting makes them feel empowered–better about themselves–as if silence and acceptance indicates weakness.
Certainly, this is Phelps’ position.
Yet, here I am reading the counter protest signs and I don’t see the comic and bot fanboys being any happier or better adjusted than the god fanboys. Much ado over nothing.
You know, it’s actually kind of surprising that there weren’t any Warhammer-related counterprotest signs. The whole “chaos gods” things seems like it’d be tailor-made.
Naw. I’m having too much fun laughing at both groups for being exactly alike yet hating each other, needlessly. Watching this is far more entertaining than becoming involved.
I saw part of this on, uh… whatever day it happened. The best part of the counter-protest is when the Nerds started chanting, “ONE OF US! ONE OF US!” at the Westboro Baptist Churchies.
It wasn’t even fair. Just on the one street corner, it was like 400 Nerds to, like, 6 WBC folk. Although, it made for entertaining viewing.
Relatedly, while I was at SDCC, I found Jesus. He was running to some booth on the other side of the vendor floor. I exclaimed, “I FOUND JESUS!” and he put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Bless you my son,” then continued on his way.
Westboro Baptist Church – one of the best demonstrations that the hardest citizen test of the First Amendment is acknowledging it also protects the rights of others to espouse that which you vehemently hate.
Sheesh, what are they protesting THIS time? Good night, all of them just need to get laid.
What AREN’T they protesting?
Your mom
They’re protesting that she upped her price to more than a nickel
They would probably be protesting about getting laid.
You see how many kids they have? Getting laid is not their problem. Contraception on the other hand…
Really? Not a “Bring Back the Dinobots!” or “Transformers Animated Forever!”
God Hates Combiners
What, exactly, are they protesting? G4′s horrid-ness? The lack of hygenie of Con Attendees? The price of Con-Exclusive Toys on the secondary market?
I assume something to do with Robin’s costume making Fred Phelps uncomfortable. There’s not a person alive who spends more time thinking about gay sex.
Saw a picture of the signs they were holding a bit ago. “God Hates Nerds.”
Piffle. :p
That position can’t possibly be supported by the canon. They’re extrapolating from vague references!
FLAWLESS VICTORY
i expect the main reason they’re picketing Comic-con is because there will be TV cameras there for them to wave that same batch of signs they’ve been using, in many cases, since their very first “protest.” It doesn’t seem to matter what they protest, as long as they get press.
Not even people who are engaged in gay sex right now are thinking about gay sex as much as Fred Phelps does.
oh man, thank you so much for that laugh
Supposedly it’s protesting the “idolatry/idol worship” of it all, from what I’ve read. Yes, we love this stuff. Yes, we think it’s awesome. No, we don’t treat the characters as some sort of religious figure. Idiots.
Speak for yourself! Decade died to save the Worlds and then came back to life!
:p
I just wanna throw out that these are the same people who pray to crosses, have crucifixes in thier homes, who have an image of jesus christ printed on half thier stuff, and who regularly worship him as thier lord and savior.
Bah. That Jesus character is just an allegory for Optimus Prime, like Aslan, King Arthur, and Gandalf.
we don’t treat the characters as some sort of religious figure. Idiots.
You realize Grant Morrison said he considers Superman a “pagan sci-fi Jesus” WHILE Westboro was protesting outside, right?
They’re just jackasses
I’m from Topeka which is their home headquarters. They’re an endless source of both amusement and frustration. ಠ_ಠ
They were protesting because “God Hates Nerds”. There were 4 of them protesting but were overshadowed by cosplayers with their own signs. My favorite being a Trekkie holding up a God Hates Jedi sign. *lmao*

That’s actually two signs overlapping. The one in back is “All glory to the hypno-toad”
And on the opposite side of the “God Hates Jedi” sign, it said “God Needs A Starship”.
My favorite of the images in that article is “Satan’s cake is a LIE!”
Even if the con-goers ARE worshiping such characters as Batman, Optimus Prime, and TRON as their Holy God and Father and Lord……so what? Isn’t that what religious freedom is all about?
These people aren’t so into the whole “religious freedom” thing.
Heathen! God hates logic!
Actually, this point gets brought up a lot but it’s not exactly relevant. The WBC are attention whores, they made sure everyone knew well in advance.
Seems like cheating to me. If this was made before the con, it probably could have been a fully-colored strip with a background. It occurs to me Willis could just pretend to be on the road any week he feels like being lazy with the art.
Hmm…who has actually seen him at the convention these last few days?
The Phelpses had announced their intention to protest weeks ahead of time.
Man, WBC were supposed to protest my school, but they never showed. What a tease.
Sideways lawl.
Sign I wanted to see:
BIZARRO HATES FAGS
That would have made me spit take.
Wait… RID Sideways? There wasn’t a Sideways in Robots in Disguise was there? Or was it a toy exclusive character??
toy exclusive, but it was a motorcycle and was used later in armada
Hey, I just realised that out of the 12 Transformers toys I own, Sideways is one of them.
…That determined expression on his face makes him remind me of… Bert from Sesame Street.
GOD HATES GROUCHES LIVING IN TRASHCANS!

Fanboy of Logic, I love logic so much.

Yet, here I am reading the counter protest signs and I don’t see the comic and bot fanboys being any happier or better adjusted than the god fanboys. Much ado over nothing.
Sure it may legitimize them, but the sheer amount of AWESOME in the counter-protest makes up for any logic to be had.
It’s not about being better adjusted than them. It’s about having more fun than them. C’mon, make up some signs. You’ll feel better.
SUPERMAN DIED FOR YOUR SINS.
DECADE IS MY PINK RIDER SAVIOR!
GOD HATES VENUS THE FEMALE TURTLE!
CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR HERESY!
Oooh, I like the last one.
They’re not exactly alike. The comic geeks have a sense of humor and tongue planted firmly in cheek. The WBC are dead serious.
Well, I think what would REALLY drive ‘em nuts and maybe get you assaulted (good for law suits, bad for your survival):
JESUS IS GAY! or
JESUS WAS GAY!
etc. and so on…
I figure anybody who equates Iraq war dead to god being down on homosexuals would not handle that at all well.
oOOOOOOOooo!
Just thought: It’s a Comic-CON! Illustrated versions of those signs!
(note do not stand within 100 meters of person holding sign unless you are in class VI body armor)
If you’re not seeing the SDCC people being better-adjusted than the WDC, I think you need to visit the optometrist.
I love on that link the guy with the God hates Jedi sign looks like Grant Imahara from mythbusters lol.
Heck yeah! I love the Marriage Ref. You sing it, Willis. Makes my relationship look normal.
The Marriage Ref is fun. My fiance and I have been watching it since it came on.
My sign would say:
“RUMBLE IS RED | FRENZY IS BLUE!”
I would make a sign for my friend that would say:
“RUMBLE IS BLUE | FRENZY IS RED!”
We’d start at opposite sides of the counterprotest then meet in the middle to slug it out”

Saw this, thought of SG Ravage. Hi! Do you see me waving?

Of God Westboro Baptist why is it the insane one get noticed and make us all look like wackjobs.
…I want to see Mike and Roadblock have a ‘Biggest Asshole’ fight with Fred Phelps.
