Personally, I am all for a Wonder Woman who is not wearing a flag. The logic behind a Greek heroine wearing the US flag is just too convoluted in modern stories.
The flag uniform was stupid, yes. Instead, they put her in a 90′s jacket with her sleeves rolled up and bracers that can brand offenders with ‘W’. And gave her a ‘darker and grittier’ origin. I don’t mind changing the costume away from the old idiocy, but let’s at least make sure the new idiocy is 2010 idiocy, not early 90′s level.
Actually, if you read the stories it made sense. she was supposed to be the ambassador of peace between paradise island and america, so she took on the colors of the country she was visiting as a sign of good will
Actually if you read the comic her costume was modeled after the uniform of Diana Trevor, Steve Trevor’s mother, who crash landed on Themyscira before Diana was born. At the time, the Amazons were charged to protect the world from the evil residing under Themyscira. When Diana Trevor arrived, this evil was threatening go get loose again, Diana jumped in and selflessly sacrificed herself. That is ALSO how the Amazon’s got a gun to perform Bullets and Bracelets.
Now Wonder Woman’s costume is classic so getting rid of that iconic costume for something vastly less remarkable while every other major MALE hero gets to keep their silly costumes just with slight modern touches? I call BS and it just shows how LITTLE DC cares about comics most recognizable female hero.
Whenever someone says something shouldn’t change without explaining why beyond using subjective words like “iconic” and “classic,” big warning lights flash inside my brain. It was no different when everyone threw a fit when Optimus Prime had *gasp* flames in the live-action movies. Why was it wrong? Because that’s not “iconic” or “classic.” What do those words mean? As far as I’ve been able to tell, those words only ever mean “that’s what I’m familiar with.” And that’s not really compelling to a person who disagrees. Might as well say “because.”
I don’t care about iconic or classic. If I did, my favorite Batgirl wouldn’t be Stephanie Brown.
Re:Jan arrah: And I call BS on that. While the jacket and all that was silly, it was meant to be temporary and soon it was dropped. Now, the only difference is GASP! She has pants!
This is more of a generic reply to anyone I’ve seen complain abouth her wearing pants now, since surprisingly there’s a lot of people doing that. But to act like its sexist to give her pants? How? Its giving her more clothing so she isn’t running around in what looks like a pair of panties. Its progress, it shows female superheroes don’t have to show any leg to sell books. I’d proffer if her uniform now covered more of her chest, but at least its a step.
The argument about classic and iconic, I’m going to agree with David Willis here, if not for the fact we share the same favourite Batgirl, but because that makes total sense: Iconic or classic doesn’t mean ‘good’. The only reason they’re ‘iconic’ is because nobody’s had the sense to change them.
The problem is that they gave pants to Wonder Woman and then turned Harley Quinn into a slut and turned Amanda Waller from a fat woman to a sexy, fit one. Trust me, those guys are still ridiculously sexist.
I think I remember hearing somewhere that wearing it as a tie is the one exception to the rule.
But it’s one of those things that I heard from somebody who heard from somebody, on and on and on.
Which is to say, set it aside for a ceremony later, not just light it up on the spot.
(yes, I had someone try to argue that you’re supposed to burn it in place.)
When I was in the Army, I was taught that you’re supposed to cut the blue field from the stripes first. That way it’s no longer the symbol of our country, and can be properly burned. However, I’ve never seen that written anywhere. Any publication of the Flag Code I’ve seen just says to destroy it “in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.”
I remember it being more than just the blue “union” field. A true military flag is stitched together. Each stripe, star, and union field is a seperate piece of meterial sewn together. You are supposed to cut the stitches and poperly remove each part before burning the worn flag in a ceremony that resembles a military funaral pyre.
I also once had a man argue with me about the way the Walmart I work for has their flags displayed. He swore that since the flag was hanging from the ceiling downward, the blue “union” field was supposed to be in the upper left corner. I told him that was only true if the flag was hanging against the wall, which it wasn’t. If you go into a Walmart, you will see what I mean. They are hanging freely as you walk in the door, and can be seen from both sides depending on your location in the store. I had to explain to him that when a flag is displayed that way, the union is supposed to be to the upper corner of the flag that faces either North (if the flag is displayed to be viewed from the East or West) or East (if the flag is displayed to be viewed from the North or South)
Actually, that is not true. The flag is not suppose to touch the ground, and old worn out flags are suppose to be burned respectfully, but those two regulations are in no way related. Just because a flag touches the ground doesn’t mean it is suppose to be burned. That is just an urban legend, even when I was in the army nobody was that anal retentive.
Actually, you just remove it from the ground. Burning is the preferred method of destroying a flag that is “unfit for display,” yes, but the flag touching the ground is only temporary. Once the condition is corrected, it is again fit for display.
No part of the U.S. Flag Code mentions that you must burn a flag that touches the ground. It’s just disrespectful to the flag. Also, these “patriots” love the flag with the bald eagle or the “twin towers” placed over it, and to superimpose any image over the flag is a clear violation of the U.S. Flag Code.
Yeah, that’s not true. Not that the flag code is ever actually enforced, but it says nothing about burning a flag that touches the ground. Glad somebody else beat me to it.
Oh, Fox News, I hate you with such a passion, and yet, you’re SOOOO easy to make fun of…
My only problem with the new Wonder Woman costume isn’t the lack of Flag-age, it’s the lack of bare legs. If you’re going to be 6.5 feet tall with insanely long legs, show them off, girl!
Her lack of pants has been one of the prime objections to the costume for a long time, though. From basically everyone. Pants or leg armor were basically required in any major redesign. I just hate the jacket and the fact that the new thing is so complex. Too many details for something that’s going to be in just about every single panel.
And the new origin is idiotic. She’s already got a more convoluted backstory than any other DC character, why make it worse? Especially when the new origin is so terrible.
So part of how they’re bragging about Diana’s new costume is that it’s more practical than the old one, with her parts less likely to bust out. but if they’re concerned with practicality in combat, I should expect really tight pants to be a hinderance rather than a help – they really could’ve gone with a skirt – if concerned about modesty, they could go for the usual workplace dress code, just above the knees, with either a slit or just having the skirt be wide and billowy. Maybe they went w/ pants ’cause they’re easier to draw?
That depends on the fabric and cut, though. I had some skintight stretch jeans that I could tuck my ankle behind my head in… Tight doesn’t automatically equal constrictive; just as skirt doesn’t automatically equal mobility. Given the choice, I’d FAR rather go into combat in pants…
I got these bike pants that look like normal pants with a trim cut but the fabric has 4 way stretch, which means no mobility limitations, I imagine super hero costume makers would know how to make non-limiting sharp looking cloths
Skirts are terrible for mobility. If they’re tight, they constrict movement and ride up (a slit can only help so much), and if they’re billowy, they catch on things and are really easy for an opponent to grab and trip you and/or just yank off.
There’s a reason women like to wear pants that has nothing to do with their appearance as compared to skirts. They are much more practical. I’d hate to try to fight someone in a skirt, or run in one. They are terrible for physical activity.
Thought it was good until I noticed the Captain America line on the ticker, now this is one of my favorite’s! I laughed out loud and I’m still giggling a little.
IIRC, the original costume was made when a soldier washed ashore with a flag so they took that to be the standard for what people wore in ‘Man’s World’. Then it was revealed that the outfit was actually ancient armor. Then it was revealed that her mother took the (soldier inspired) armor back in time so that she could be Wonder Woman without copying her daughter, making the armor /also/ ancient. Then it was revealed that I no longer cared.
Well, Bucky Barnes is now Captain America, and he spent, what, 50 years either assassinating the enemies of Communist Russia or dozing in cryonic storage? Pretty sure he won’t get his pants twisted over the Flag Code .
Man. These three panels are as good as an entire episode of the Daily Show. I wish the whole comic had tickers at the bottom; they’re always soooo good.
…Except the costume isn’t made out of flags. Going by this logic, every July 4th decoration even hinting at the red-white-and-blue is disrespectful. It’s your country’s flag. What the hell’s wrong with you people?
Flag paper plates and napkins are definitely disrespectful. They’re even disposable, which adds insult to injury! Not only are you using the flag to wipe your mouth, but you’re throwing it away like garbage.
The irony that most of you are missing is that the studio’s background goes against the Flag Code as well.
“d. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.”
The background doesn’t count, it’s not made of a real American flag. And “section 3″ only talks about about use of the flag in merchandise, and only in D.C. For that matter, section j. covers the use of the flag in uniforms and patriotic organization, and gives the ok for lapel pins, too.
How many times do we have to post the section of the Flag Code which notes that if it looks like the flag it still totally counts? It’s not just against stuff made from actual flags. We’ve done it three times already on this page. Four, I think, would be overkill.
David, your quote of section 3, no matter how many times it’s posted, does not apply to section 8 article j. Section three applies only to section three, only in D.C., and only to use of the flag in advertising. If section three applied to the whole code, then the code would be self contradictory. I liked the comic, it’s snarky and well drawn and I appreciate the point it’s trying to make, but it’s just not accurate in its assumptions.
Sadly that cookie cutter talking head would just respond with how she hates America and it troops by 1 questioning him and 2 always talking about peace. He would then say “cut her mic.”
Hannity’s tactic is to take whatever you said to mean you’re anti-freedom. Why cut the mic when you can call them a pinko (I just wanted to use that word today)?
I’ve been saying for years that if Jesus came back tomorrow and appeared on TV with a Democratic candidate or office holder, Fox would be collectively screaming about how He was born in the Middle East and how the whole “don’t hate anybody” thing was liberal crap.
And that would be the end of Christianity for the extreme right…
I walked out of a Baptist church in the 1980s when the minister started preaching that to be liberal was a sin.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have stood up and asked, “Is my Savior a sinner? Jesus Christ himself was turned over to Pontius Pilate by the Pharisees because of his liberal teachings!”
Fact Check:
Jesus was not turned over “by the Pharisees” (who, BTW, were actually the more liberal party in first century Judaism–the Sadduccees were the equivalent of modern day fundamentalists, and Jesus’ methods of exegesis and teaching were Pharisaical). He was turned over by the Sanhedrin.
Jesus was not turned over for “his liberal teachings” but for claiming to be God.
The Pharissees’ whole view was that 1) Jewishness was primarily a cultural thing, and Jews had to be separate from other people; 2) as long as you were ritually clean, and could find legal loopholes, everything else was fine.
Jesus’ teachings were hardly “liberal” by any stretch of the imagination: His whole point was that the Mosaic Law wasn’t strict enough. “Moses only allowed it because of your weakness.” “You’ve heard ‘do not kill.’ I say ‘Do not be angry.’” “From the beginning, God intended it male and female, . . . and what God has joined together let no man put asunder.” “Anyone who looks at a woman with lust commits adultery.” “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” is not a liberalization of the Law but a restricting of it, creating a new standard for the Death Penalty.
Personally I’m okay with Diana’s new costume. Sure, it’s not the one I grew-up with but its not the worse costume ever made (cough/electrosuperman/cough). I can’t wait however for her to go back to her old look, since that’s the iconic look for her. You don’t permanently change the look for Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman.
Her new origins however, I’ll be glad to see the end of, and it’s barely even started yet.
I dont mind the new costume, as ordinary and suggestive of Black Canary as it might be, but the back story theme is getting repetitive and tedious. I mean, what’s next, a darker and grittier Richie Rich?
Darker and grittier Ritchie (Darkrich) will be different. He’ll find out his family gained their fortune by selling drugs made from the blood of enslaved fairies by a ancient cabal of evil immortals, and decide to use his fortune to fight the evil magi-cartel and their werewolf vampire enforcers (Were-vamp-wolves). It will be written by an eleven year old boy, but due to contractual disputes writing duties will be shifted to Stephenie Meyer, at which point the cast will be joined by an annoying girl with no relevant abilities and a rogue werevampwolf who never wears a shirt and sparkles in the sun.
Hey now, one of the greatest web comics ever is written by like a 5 yr old! Just drop the age of the writer a bit and you have a genius story right there! http://axecop.com/ for reference
A few weeks on and I still can’t decide if I like the new costume or not. I’m certainly not keen on the ‘Wonder Buffy’ slant to Diana now, and the story patently has to be an out of continuity/alternate universe, otherwise Donna, Cassie, and pretty much the whole DCU get messed over by the changes.
Still, Straczynski is more hit than miss with me, so I’ll see where it goes.
The flag statutes refer to /actual/ American flags, not stuff modeled in the image of the American flag. Wonder Woman did not take an actual American flag and cut it up, sew it back together, and make her clothes, she wore clothes in a flag-like pattern. There’s a difference. The same applies to a stars-and-stripes background in a tv studio… if it’s not an actual flag, it isn’t covered by the code.
That’s incorrect. The Flag Code specifically refers to anything which the average person believes to be a representation of the flag. So, yes, her uniform absolutely would be covered by it.
Quote from Section 3 of the Flag Code.
“The words “flag, standard, colors, or ensign”, as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America.”
I said this on Comic Critics, and I’ll say it here. I got bored of Wonder Woman after one trade paperback. Here in England she doesn’t even have a regular publication (Supes and Bats do). So it’s hard for me to give a d**n.
And I’m sure glad we don’t have a flag code code here. I wear a St. George’s Cross shirt with a Union Jack denim jacket. If I had a mask I’d be a superhero.
“And I’m sure glad we don’t have a flag code code here. I wear a St. George’s Cross shirt with a Union Jack denim jacket. If I had a mask I’d be a superhero.”
Without one, you’re merely a fashion disaster. *rim shot*
“I like the new uniform, but… I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I missed ogling Wonder Woman’s body in the old uniform.”
And that pretty much sums up why her costume had to change. Kinda hard to put her on the same level as Supes and Bats when your reaction to seeing them is “cool, it’s Superman!/oh shit, it’s the Batman!” and your reaction to seeing her is to get a massive erection.
First you misinterpreted the code. No part of the flag, as in the physical flag itself and not something that symbolizes the flag, can not be used as uniform.
If this wasn’t case then she a hypocrite with the stars on her jacket.
Also didn’t the supreme court just rule you could wear clothing that represents the flag?
( I remember reading students were suing their school because they were suspended because that wore Tap out shirts that had the flag on it._
This rule is widely misunderstood, and used by people who do hate the flag to try and mock those who love it (Not claiming you do, just mentioning it). Wonder Woman’s redesign is largely based on attempting to reach out to gain a larger following from other countries that do not like the United States… A similar problem is what at first affected Captain America as people doubted his uniform/self could sell outside the US.
Instead what it seems to come across as is something like Miley Cyrus, who is suddenly ‘ashamed’ of her origins the second she wants to try and hit it big elsewhere. Wonder Womans original costume is as Iconic as Supermans red shorts, and trying to change them does reflect a disturbing trend in this country where the flag is being less and less respected, and becoming more of a mark for shame for many people.
It’s not misunderstood. Another poster above was kind enough to paste the following:
So you can get away with wearing a single star on a blue background, as long as no-one takes it to represent the stars from the flag? But if it’s several stars and some red and white stripes, then it’s too much?
And the red/white stripes within the Obama “O” probably count as well.
Of course, if you start running for President WITHOUT those elements you’d probably be quickly labeled a communist or nazi or whatever. Which, I would think, is why the flag code was suggested in the first place. The flag loses its power if anyone can repurpose it for whatever the hell they want, and abandon what it actually means for a patriotism arms race. The flag becomes a distraction from more important issues.
But the law is meant to avoid lessening the power of the flag, that it’s supposed to be a highly respected emblem. I may respect someone envoking that law if they’re the sort of person to go out in the rain to take down the flag, properly fold it, properly store it.. etc… But so few people in this country do anymore.
As it is, displaying the stars and stripes can be symbolized as a emblem of pride in your country. Or in Wonder Woman’s case, pride for the brave american soldier who fought for her people and became the only man to be buried on her island. I think that’s the current story anyway, they seem to retcon it so much.
So claiming Wonder Woman is ‘respecting’ the flag more is kinda funny. XD like I mentioned above, it’s more like she wants to be more popular in other countries, and just wants to use that as an excuse. Kinda like how in the past decade Americans claim to be Canadian when going overseas.
I think saying the design was only changed to make the character appeal to readers outside the US is reaching. Let’s be honest — even putting the flag motif aside, her classic costume is absurd. It’s a one piece bathing suit, and bits of her would be falling out of it constantly in the middle of a fight. So, they migrated her to realistic clothes. Done.
(YMMV in terms of whether you like the new costume or not. I just severely doubt it’s some crazed patriotism-denial tactic.)
Look, all this comic of mine is trying to say is that because I disagree with you in any capacity whatsoever it’s because I am in league with our enemies and wish to see our nation destroyed.
And lets be honest, the founding fathers would choke on their teeth if they saw what a hub-ub a flag causes these days. I mean, these are the same guys who lost the declaration of independence.
Not ones to put much stock in physical representations.
It’s a wad of cloth. If thats how you define your national ideantity…. you need to crack open a history book. We should define ourselves by experience, not by representations.
And on another comment I glanced over. I would LOVE to see a candidate run without all the stereotypical imagery.
Their campaing slogan can be “Vote for Joey Vilone, A candidate whos got balls of steel”. (I am only partly joking, I think it would show a lot of clot to run without doing the ussual but kissing.)
Any person who, within the District of Columbia, in any manner, for exhibition or display, shall place or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, drawing, or any advertisement of any nature upon any flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America; or shall expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign upon which shall have been printed, painted, or otherwise placed, or to which shall be attached, appended, affixed, or annexed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, or drawing, or any advertisement of any nature; or who, within the District of Columbia, shall manufacture, sell, expose for sale, or to public view, or give away or have in possession for sale, or to be given away or for use for any purpose, any article or substance being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle for merchandise or article or thing for carrying or transporting merchandise, upon which shall have been printed, painted, attached, or otherwise placed a representation of any such flag, standard, colors, or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark, or distinguish the article or substance on which so placed shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in the discretion of the court. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
Captain America is exempt.
I tend to just overlook your political comics, as they’re few and far between, but this one caught enough of my interest that I thought I’d look into it.
Most flag desecration state laws were held to be unconstitutional based on the findings of Texas v. Johnson where the court found that flag burning was protected by the rights to free speech as written in the Constitution of the United States. Following that in 1990, the Supreme Court found in United States v. Eichman that congress could not constitutionally make law to protect the flag without abridging an individual’s right to free speech.
Effectively, the Supreme Court made any real enforcement of the Flag Code unconstitutional. In fact, if you read the full wording of the Flag Code, the only area where the Flag Code is, in fact, enforceable, is the District of Columbia.
The comic’s somewhat funny, because Hannity is a moron, I guess? Though, given that his show’s only been on for about 5 years, and Wonder Woman’s been sporting the star-spangled underroos since the 1940′s… I mean, you kinda have to wonder why it took her 70+ years to figure out she’s doing it wrong.
Well, what goes for desecration pretty much goes for any use, so wearing it on clothing, plastering it over a studio or placing it on a disposable napkin is pretty much a non-issue anymore.
Except noone takes it as disrespectful except for those who already find the flag offensive, and are trying to look for WAYS to make those who aren’t offended by the flag to avoid displaying it. You notice patriotic people rarely complain about wearing a flag, only smug sarcastic individuals that probably think those who are patriotic are ignorant red-necks.
Granted, it’s good policy to follow flag code, but I highly doubt most anyone here knew about the flag code until it was mentioned in the comic. Moreover, when the government in place is insistent that it’s own codes are unconstitutional, it’s rather tough for us civilians to follow it.
“You notice patriotic people rarely complain about wearing a flag, only smug sarcastic individuals that probably think those who are patriotic are ignorant red-necks.”
Which, as I mentioned, is a complete turn-around from the attitudes of not that long ago, when wearing the flag was apparently a smug, sarcastic thing to do in the eyes of supposed patriots. Apparently the rules are occasionally restructured to keep certain people on the other side of the fence.
And what I notice is that people like to call themselves things without actually bothering to understand or believe any of the underlying principles or rules of the title they identify themselves with.
Leaving aside the straw man that Wonder Woman wasn’t actually wearing the flag, but flag evocative imagery, which is not a violation of the Flag code (neither are t-shirts with pictures of flags on them. The flag code prohibits actually making a shirt out of a flag, not forbidding everything red, white & blue with stars & stripes).
But leaving that aside, I think a much bigger issue is that the new costume is dated, tacky, and is considerably less powerful than her classic outift. We’ve traded one of the most recognizable costumes in the world for what, every 90′s characters backup costume?
There’s also the fact that she’s, y’know, Greek. Mythological Greek, but Greek nonetheless. She shouldn’t be wearing an American-centered costume any more than I “should” be wearing one themed on the flag of, say, Libya.
Incidentally, Willis, did you happen to know that part of the constitution offhand?
Talk about a non-issue on BOTH sides. Fox News should have better things to do than have a story about this. But at the same time why even bother writing a comic about it? I wore a shirt on the 4th of July with an American flag on it, so I guess I should turn myself in? Everyone has different opinions on the matter but there are a lot more terrible things going on in this world. So liberals and conservatives I just have this to say: Let’s get back to solving the real issues!
Sorry Willis, just venting my political frustrations. Some of my family’s unreasonably conservative, while some friends are so far left they could fall off the face of the Earth. It just seems like we get so bogged down with minor issues like this that no one truly looks at the big picture.
Personally, I doubt very much this was done to reach a worldwide readership, because I don’t remember American comics being read all that much in other countries.
Then again, culturally speaking, I am so far from the US it’s not funny.
I’m pretty sure that part of the code specifically means “You cannot take a flag or any part of a flag and make it into a costume” rather than “You cannot make clothing resemble a flag in any way”
Quote from Section 3 of the Flag Code.
I second Mr. Whim.
Section j. full text: (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
The quote from section three is out of context and has nothing to do with the comic. Section three clearly states that that its prohibition against images of the flag is is only valid in the District of Columbia and that it only applies to the use of the flag in advertising, per http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode04/usc_sec_04_00000003—-000-.html
All mentions of D.C. in the links you provide are because it is the only area the Flag Code is enforceable. Everywhere else in the United States it is a guideline to be followed on a voluntary basis. Regardless of whether it’s technically illegal, it’s still disrespectful to the flag to ignore the flag code, just like it’s not illegal to flip off your mother but not something you’d do if you want to respect her.
I feel like the only person that LIKES the new Wonder Woman look. I think it’s a big improvement.
More super heroes should get a costume update if you ask me.
btw if i remember correctly, her panties were just white stars on a red background? So while it may suggest patriotism with the red/white stars, her panties were not an American flag.
Patriotic, shmatriotic. Her old costume was nothing special but at least it looked superheroy. Putting her in supercivvies reminds me too much of Diana Prince.
Oh spot on!
Actually, if you read the stories it made sense. she was supposed to be the ambassador of peace between paradise island and america, so she took on the colors of the country she was visiting as a sign of good will
she’s Greek? you learn something everyday. and that made me feel like i have missed something terribly important in my childhood. NOT ENOUGH COMICS!
She’s Themysciran, which is Hellenistic (primarily due to their connection to the Greek gods), but not, actually, Greek.
Betsy Ross was part of an amazonian sleeper cell. Boom! Explained
Amen!
Nice necktie too. Tho’ perhaps it needs some tightening…
I think I remember hearing somewhere that wearing it as a tie is the one exception to the rule.
But it’s one of those things that I heard from somebody who heard from somebody, on and on and on.
So basically from the network this strip is making fun of?
Nice. I wonder if “patriots” also know you’re supposed to burn a flag if it touches the ground?
I wonder what the rules cover a woman wearing the flag as a bikini without underwear between it and her pubic places.
Come on. You KNOW she doesn’t wear underwear under there.
Also, FLAG CODE, YAY!!!!!!
Uh, Actually it’s a myth that flags should be destroyed if they touch the ground.
As far as I can tell this myth is largely perpetuated by Boy Scout troop adult leaders trying to stop the kids from fooling around with the flag.
This idea is not codified in writing anywhere, it’s just a myth. You’re sort of supposed to realize that when you become a grown-up.
Yeah, that’s where I heard it, when I was in scouts.
Yea, but not there and then. There has to be a ceremony to do so. I should know, I’ve done it as a Boy Scout.
I had wondered about that. My grandfather used to get annoyed when my sister wore her flag windbreaker around him.
You speak truth. My dad told me that back in the `60s he knew more than one person who got the crap beaten out of them for wearing the flag.
Even with the latest reboot Diana hardly has the most complicated origin in DC comics, that honor belongs to Hawkman, Power Girl or Donna Troy.
The pants are win and life and yay. Please, more superheroines with pants.
Thought it was good until I noticed the Captain America line on the ticker, now this is one of my favorite’s! I laughed out loud and I’m still giggling a little.
Bah! Extraneous apostrophe! Apologies.
Never DID make much sense that an Amazon warrior wore an American flag.
On the Recent animated movie, it is said that she is honoring the Country that she is visiting.
Well, that makes sense in a way, but the explanation itself is pretty stupid.
Really. What does she wear when she’s, like, checking out Belarus? Or Iraq?
how is that captain america quote suppose to end with “yeah” or “you”?
I assumed it just said “oh f***” as in he just realized he’s violating the flag code.
*rotflmao* Poor Capt America!
Well, Bucky Barnes is now Captain America, and he spent, what, 50 years either assassinating the enemies of Communist Russia or dozing in cryonic storage? Pretty sure he won’t get his pants twisted over the Flag Code
.
besides he looks more like captain Porto Rico, now.
As in their flag, and not in a racial way.
…you mean “Puerto”?
Awesome news tickers. Personally I always hated WW’s old costume, but the jacket on this one is so 90s.
pWWned.
Don’t forget cakes decorated with flag-pattern icing. Think of where that ends up! Now that’s desecration.
There is no greater honor than deliciousness.
Um, see Panel 3? She is pointing out exactly that.
Given the speed at which retro comes around these days, the 90es will be back in fashion any minute now, so the refit is actually avantguarde.
Captain America has nothing to worry about. His uniform looks more like the Puerto Rican flag than that of the USA.
I like the new uniform, but… I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I missed ogling Wonder Woman’s body in the old uniform.
A darker Richie Rich? His name is Batman.
Reminds me of this: http://www.the-isb.com/?p=304
Well, couldnt resist…
http://docandraider.blogspot.com/2010/07/darker-grittier.html
What bother me with that new costume is that is steal the style of Wonder Girl.
Pants is the trademark of Wonder Girl and I think she should be the only one using it (with Super Boy)
I prefer Wonder Woman when she wear that sort of super Armor.
Funny Straw Man is Funny. -XD
Nope, it’s just tacky.
Well, really, most people pay no attention to that rule in the U. S. of A.
Second what Spiderpool279 said. She took on American colours because she was acting as ambassador between the Amazons and America.
Which still doesn’t make much sense because ambassadors generally don’t do anything like that, but whatever.
Wow. That’s some awesome burn here.
This, is so full of win. <3
Nope, it refers to any representation of the flag. Somebody posted the relevant section of the flag code above, check it.
So you can get away with wearing a single star on a blue background, as long as no-one takes it to represent the stars from the flag? But if it’s several stars and some red and white stripes, then it’s too much?
Yes, it even covers the “W’04″ bumper stickers that have 20 stars and 7 stripes on those stickers’ abridged flag.
And the red/white stripes within the Obama “O” probably count as well.
Of course, if you start running for President WITHOUT those elements you’d probably be quickly labeled a communist or nazi or whatever.
But then, many retards have already labeled Obama exactly those things, even WITH those elements in place.
“The flag becomes a distraction from more important issues.”
It’s the Lapel Pin fiasco all over again!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
…”used by people who do hate the flag to try and mock those who love it.”
Just ’cause Glenn Beck said it, that don’t make it true.
Look, all this comic of mine is trying to say is that because I disagree with you in any capacity whatsoever it’s because I am in league with our enemies and wish to see our nation destroyed.
I mean, hello, it’s pretty obvious.
And on top of the Code, don’t forget that before, whenever she moved she was wiping her ass with the American flag.
It reminds me of that wonderful word “Flag!”
Glad to see I’m not the only person that likes the new WW outfit.
what’s weird is when people think the flag code is the law.. y’know.. which would be bad.. we do have a constitution..
So the flag law only applies to people who live in Washington DC? All those people selling memorabilia there are breaking the law!
IT IS the Law
It’s perfectly legal to desecrate a flag, yeah, but it’s incredibly disrespectful, and only done in protest. Kinda defeats what WW’s going for.
Well, what goes for desecration pretty much goes for any use, so wearing it on clothing, plastering it over a studio or placing it on a disposable napkin is pretty much a non-issue anymore.
It’s not illegal. But legality isn’t the point.
You can’t very well be an effective goodwill ambassador if your very outfit is a sign of disrespect.
And oh snap, the entire studio is also a sign of disrespect in the same way.
I live in DC. It is still law here
The New Captain America is good as it is clearly a large patch and he is part of a patriotic organization. The Avengers

Is the costume now free for others to wear?
Interesting that it’s some sort of parody of Fox News when just about every news show has flags all over the place.
That’s because Fox News published the story that this strip is taken from.
Woman Puts on Pants And Is No Longer Patriotic. Story at 9.
It’s not from the Constitution.
Note to self: Only write comics about the most terrible thing going on in the world.
(Do you really want to read comic after comic about Tosh 2.0?)
Sorry Willis, just venting my political frustrations. Some of my family’s unreasonably conservative, while some friends are so far left they could fall off the face of the Earth. It just seems like we get so bogged down with minor issues like this that no one truly looks at the big picture.
Reminds myself: ‘It’s only a comic, only a comic’
a href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code”
’nuff said.
How much of the flag do you have to wear before it contravenes the Code? Like, is the colour white considered ‘part of the flag’?
All these people wrapping themselves the Flag Code, and yet the result is having the flag toned down, muted, and otherwise obscured.
No patriotism for you, expect in judiciously permitted circumstances!
I’m… entertained by how crazy everyone is getting over this topic and this comic. Good job, Mr. Willis.
Let’s see how the next day’s comic does!
Personally, I doubt very much this was done to reach a worldwide readership, because I don’t remember American comics being read all that much in other countries.
Then again, culturally speaking, I am so far from the US it’s not funny.
I’m pretty sure that part of the code specifically means “You cannot take a flag or any part of a flag and make it into a costume” rather than “You cannot make clothing resemble a flag in any way”
Pasted for the third time here:
And here I always just thought they were big blue bloomers with white stars on them.
I’m surprised you didn’t draw Wonder Woman in the Timm style like you do Bats.
I don’t always draw Batman in the Timm style. Mind, even when I try not to draw him in the Timm style, he kinda comes out that way anyhow…
I feel like the only person that LIKES the new Wonder Woman look. I think it’s a big improvement.
More super heroes should get a costume update if you ask me.
Fuck, that’s hot.
Where can I get me some star spangled panties?
/off to rub one out
btw if i remember correctly, her panties were just white stars on a red background? So while it may suggest patriotism with the red/white stars, her panties were not an American flag.
LMFAO. I love Captain America’s quote at the end.
Well OBVIOUSLY her outfit should be made of the same material as her airplane seats. So they match. -pant- -pant- :p
Wow, you United States folk sure do take that flag thing seriously, there must be hundreds of posts here and the comic has only been up a week.
wha hahaha! Those stupid conservatives are so stupid! They’re not smart like we are! So smart and progressive!!!
This is great.
Totally unrelated but, they have made Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, So the world will sleep in terror.
“Still no ‘Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2′, world rests easy”
Willis… promise me you’ll never EVER tempt fate like that again.
Owwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnn’d.
Patriotic, shmatriotic. Her old costume was nothing special but at least it looked superheroy. Putting her in supercivvies reminds me too much of Diana Prince.
The worst part about the ticker on the bottom? Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3 has recently come out. 3!!
