Really, that’s a terrible thing to say. First he’s implying that you can’t be interesting without being in Beast Wars, and then he’s suggesting that Dinobot isn’t interesting on his own merits, but only because he -was- in Beast Wars. I think Shockwave and Grimlock were both interesting in the comics (Shockwave moreso Budiansky, and Grimlock moreso Furman), and why would you lessen Dinobot’s level of interesting?
Okay, so Shockwave and Grimlock aren’t interesting
“Even if it’s just by virtue of being from Beast Wars.”
He’s only interesting because he’s in Beast Wars, not because he’s actually interesting. (granted, the “if” makes it ambiguous, but it still sounds wrong)
He’s talking about predictability. Soundwave and Grimlock are great characters, but they’re really obvious in a popularity poll. Someone — anyone — not from Generation 1 is automatically more interesting, predictability-wise.
(Someone from the UT would be more interesting still. Dinobot, though from Beast Wars, is still from the Generation 1 continuity family.)
Ohh. He’s not saying Dinobot’s the only interesting “character,” he’s saying he’s the only interesting “nominee.” That was the keyword I was overlooking… sorry, I just felt like Shockwave was besmirched and so I leapt into “internet nerd rage.”
As much as I like Dinobot, he was not as original as some ‘young whippersnappers’ think. Carnivac did the whole faction switch due to his honor and remained a Con (even keeping his badge) although fighting on the Autobot side. But of course, not many of the newer fans read the UK Comics.
My vote was on Shockwave, of course. Until the DW/IDW comics sadly he was only thought of as the totally inept Soundwave wannabe of the cartoon, thankfully Furman re-established the cold logical coolness of Shocky to its full glory. Though, we have Budiansky to thank for the best version of Shockwave, to be frank.
Dinobot is the “Proud Warrior Race Guy,” which is an archetype that long predates Carnivac.
Carnivac’s honor-inspired faction-swap is not nearly as fleshed out as Dinobot’s, anyway. Carnivac’s arc was, what, a handful of half-sized black -and-white back-up stories? His motives were revealed more through telling than showing, and he kind of throws out his millions of years of history with his original faction overnight because one Autobot was nice to him. It’s kind of like a Chick tract in comparison to Dinobot’s 30-odd episodes of solid characterization.
Frankly, Transformers-wise, Blitzwing did it first in “Five Faces of Darkness” in 1986, though his honorable about-face was even more abbreviated. (Though it would have been less so if they hadn’t replaced the “former Decepticon making good” role with Octane.)
That doesn’t really feel like the same thing. Skyfire was tricked. He never really believed what the Decepticons believed. As Optimus Primal once said to Silverbolt when he compared himself to Dinobot, “You didn’t KNOW better!”
You’re lucky you were able to cheat the system and vote so many times. The most I can do is beg my friends, family, and DA watchers to vote as well. I’m even starting to consider bribing them at this point. @_@
But yes, Torrents ho!
Even though I had to look up the avatar I was randomly assigned, I’m still being a good SP/TF lemming and voting for Dinobot. However, out of respect, I won’t tell you what happened to my first Dinobot toy.
You are all missing/overlooking Autobot Jazz!! Not only did he have style, he was also the only TF (autobot or decepticon) who could speak real english!! and did I mention he was styling? he’s a freaking Porsche for FSM’s sake(I don’t care what the did to him in the “movie” he is and always has been a Porsche)!!
I agree, Jazz all the way. I just remember when I was a young boy the local toy store had a guy in a sweet Jazz suit, obviously it had an impact on me. That and he was my second Transformer behind Thrust……. Sweet Sweet Thrust.
Ya, I was all set to go there and vote Dinobot for Ethan even though I haven’t cared abot Transformers since the Marvel run ended, but then I saw Jazz!
Ethan amuses me. His fan boy indignation mixing with his sense of injustice creates a nice bit of absurdity that makes me smile.
Actually I voted for Dinobot, despite having grown up watching G1 TF. Soundwave is awesome but Dinobot stole the show for me nearly every episode he was featured in during Beastwars. Code of Honor still gives me goose bumps.
Question! The voting site seems to allude that you can vote once a day until May 28th or so. Yet when I tried to vote again today, it said I could not. Anyone else noticed this?
Actually, I’ve been wondering something for a while now. Just how old is Jacob? I’ve been trying to calculate his age ever since we found out he grew up with Power Rangers.
I don’t have any Real Ages in my head for my Shortpacked! characters, since that’s how I roll, but I know what age range they are. Jacob is in his early twenties.
I’m 23, and the things Jacob “grew up with” or is knowledgeable about are the same things as they were for me, while my 21 year old roommate considers them “before his time” and my 27 year old roommate thought of them as “kiddy crap” when they were popular (Power Rangers, Beast Wars, etc.).
Makes sense. He’s the character closest in age to my boyfriend and I (we’re both 19), but it’s obvious he’s older than us. I just wanted to know how much older.
Oh noes! The company that made up their own Hall of Fame for a group of fictional characters that they completely own the rights to won’t honor the made-up contributions of one of those characters! Egads!
No, not really.
It just struck me how silly the whole “hall of fame” for fictional characters that are all generated by the same IP company is when you really get down to it. It’s not like actual people advancing a field or artform. Fun though.
I still voted of course, and for Dinobot too for what it’s worth.
Dinobot is awesome. Best TF character ever! I voted for him . . . but the quote they picked for him is completely inappropriate as a personal catchphrase. Why not “I fight with honor and beat my foes the old fashioned way–brutally!” or something?
Dinobot’s only interesting because he was in Beast Wars? That is blasphemy my good friend. I challenge you to fisticuffs.
I don’t think that’s what Ethan’s saying at all. Re-read!
“Dinobot’s the only interesting nominee”
Okay, so Shockwave and Grimlock aren’t interesting
“Even if it’s just by virtue of being from Beast Wars.”
He’s only interesting because he’s in Beast Wars, not because he’s actually interesting. (granted, the “if” makes it ambiguous, but it still sounds wrong)

Uh, did he mean the only reason Dinobot was nominated was because he was in Beast Wars? If so, I stand down on my challenge.
But if he did mean Dinobot was only interesting because he was in Beast Wars, some nut sacks are going to get kicked.
As much as I like Dinobot, he was not as original as some ‘young whippersnappers’ think. Carnivac did the whole faction switch due to his honor and remained a Con (even keeping his badge) although fighting on the Autobot side. But of course, not many of the newer fans read the UK Comics.

Actually, Skyfire’s turn from Decepticon to Autobot predates the Blitzwing/Octane change by two years.
That doesn’t really feel like the same thing. Skyfire was tricked. He never really believed what the Decepticons believed. As Optimus Primal once said to Silverbolt when he compared himself to Dinobot, “You didn’t KNOW better!”
I am confused and frightened by your two separate avatars.
Heh. Ethan’s so angry about that! It’s quite addorable, really.
LOL because youve tweeted about it so much, ive voted about 28-30 times. yay for school computers!
As an old fart, I have never seen a single episode of TF or BW, but just for you Ethan, I went and voted for Soun- er, Dinobot! (Really!)
I voted for Shockwave. Never saw BW, but read all 330+ issues of Marvel UK’s run, and Shockwave was awesome in that, right from his debut
^ This guy gets it!
Dinobot inferior. Soundwave superior.
Hell yeah, SOUNDWAVE SUPERIOR, Dr Smoov knows the score.
Soundwave has no honor! He would rather let mini-cons do the fighting for him than meet on the field of battle and prove his superiority!
Only 5 episodes of G1 aired in my lifetime. Beast Wars is why I got into Transformers. Vote Soundwave.
Beast Wars ALWAYS needs more love.
So am I the only one upset we can’t vote for Sky-Byte?
Voted for Dinobot. Beast Wars was my first Transformers series (I was five), so the Nostalgia Filter’s hard to bypass.
LOL this is why I voted so many times for dinobot. because i miss Beast wars. TO THE TORRENTS!
You’re lucky you were able to cheat the system and vote so many times. The most I can do is beg my friends, family, and DA watchers to vote as well. I’m even starting to consider bribing them at this point. @_@
But yes, Torrents ho!
I haven’t really watched Transformers in years but Soundwave made a huge impression on me as a kid.
Even though I had to look up the avatar I was randomly assigned, I’m still being a good SP/TF lemming and voting for Dinobot. However, out of respect, I won’t tell you what happened to my first Dinobot toy.
I’ll tell you instead! He ate it.
Are we supposed to vote based on character or toy? Dinobot was a better character, but Soundwave’s toy rocks to an 80′s beat!
You know Ethan, he’s allowed to think something’s cool even if he wasn’t there.
…real English? Is that like a true fan?
(And if we’re talking altmodes, personally I like the Lamborghinis.)
Jazz Rocks!!!!!!!
Jazz was my first ever Transformer, you never forget your firsts
And he loooooves Madonna!
Yay! David Willis replied to me!!
I agree, Jazz all the way. I just remember when I was a young boy the local toy store had a guy in a sweet Jazz suit, obviously it had an impact on me. That and he was my second Transformer behind Thrust……. Sweet Sweet Thrust.
Ya, I was all set to go there and vote Dinobot for Ethan even though I haven’t cared abot Transformers since the Marvel run ended, but then I saw Jazz!
why does every one forget rat trap
Because we make a concerted effort to do so!!
As for the vote, anyone who’s seen “code of hero” MUST vote for Dinobot!!!!!
Rattrap is a badass.
I went and voted… for Soundwave. Sorry David, but he was my favorite as a kid! To be honest, all five choices are pretty awesome though.

Are you responding to anything in particular…? This seems kind of random and nonsensical.
No, not really.
It just struck me how silly the whole “hall of fame” for fictional characters that are all generated by the same IP company is when you really get down to it. It’s not like actual people advancing a field or artform. Fun though.
I still voted of course, and for Dinobot too for what it’s worth.
Grimlock KING!
Are you suggesting Soundwave doesn’t deserve to be inducted?
TREADING ON THIN ICE, WILLIS!
He isn’t suggesting that, per se, but that Dinobot would be BETTER than Soundwave, not that Soundwave doesn’t deserve to be inducted.
Hmm, I see your argument and it’s many valid points and here is my well thought out and concise rebuttal:
Soundwave forever, Dinobot never! Soundwave forever, Dinobot never!
I want to vote for Sky-Byte, too!
My goodness I love me some Dinobot. I had better vote for him.
Grew up on Beast Wars. So, Viva La Dinobot.
I don’t quite remember Soundwave so well, I don’t think he showed up a lot in the shows I watched more. So, meh.
Going to vote now.
Hmmm… Can we do a write in vote for Seeker #168?
Dinobot is awesome. Best TF character ever! I voted for him . . . but the quote they picked for him is completely inappropriate as a personal catchphrase. Why not “I fight with honor and beat my foes the old fashioned way–brutally!” or something?
…and Dinobot won. So ha!
I like both….
“That Guy That Shoots Other Guys Out Of His Chest” is now how I will refer to Soundwave.
Jacob means Blaster, right?
