Dinobot’s only interesting because he was in Beast Wars? That is blasphemy my good friend. I challenge you to fisticuffs.

Really, that’s a terrible thing to say. First he’s implying that you can’t be interesting without being in Beast Wars, and then he’s suggesting that Dinobot isn’t interesting on his own merits, but only because he -was- in Beast Wars. I think Shockwave and Grimlock were both interesting in the comics (Shockwave moreso Budiansky, and Grimlock moreso Furman), and why would you lessen Dinobot’s level of interesting?

          “Dinobot’s the only interesting nominee”

Okay, so Shockwave and Grimlock aren’t interesting

“Even if it’s just by virtue of being from Beast Wars.”

He’s only interesting because he’s in Beast Wars, not because he’s actually interesting. (granted, the “if” makes it ambiguous, but it still sounds wrong)

He’s talking about predictability. Soundwave and Grimlock are great characters, but they’re really obvious in a popularity poll. Someone — anyone — not from Generation 1 is automatically more interesting, predictability-wise.

(Someone from the UT would be more interesting still. Dinobot, though from Beast Wars, is still from the Generation 1 continuity family.)

Ohh. He’s not saying Dinobot’s the only interesting “character,” he’s saying he’s the only interesting “nominee.” That was the keyword I was overlooking… sorry, I just felt like Shockwave was besmirched and so I leapt into “internet nerd rage.”

Uh, did he mean the only reason Dinobot was nominated was because he was in Beast Wars? If so, I stand down on my challenge.

But if he did mean Dinobot was only interesting because he was in Beast Wars, some nut sacks are going to get kicked.

As much as I like Dinobot, he was not as original as some ‘young whippersnappers’ think. Carnivac did the whole faction switch due to his honor and remained a Con (even keeping his badge) although fighting on the Autobot side. But of course, not many of the newer fans read the UK Comics.

My vote was on Shockwave, of course. Until the DW/IDW comics sadly he was only thought of as the totally inept Soundwave wannabe of the cartoon, thankfully Furman re-established the cold logical coolness of Shocky to its full glory. Though, we have Budiansky to thank for the best version of Shockwave, to be frank.

Dinobot is the “Proud Warrior Race Guy,” which is an archetype that long predates Carnivac.

Carnivac’s honor-inspired faction-swap is not nearly as fleshed out as Dinobot’s, anyway. Carnivac’s arc was, what, a handful of half-sized black -and-white back-up stories? His motives were revealed more through telling than showing, and he kind of throws out his millions of years of history with his original faction overnight because one Autobot was nice to him. It’s kind of like a Chick tract in comparison to Dinobot’s 30-odd episodes of solid characterization.

Frankly, Transformers-wise, Blitzwing did it first in “Five Faces of Darkness” in 1986, though his honorable about-face was even more abbreviated. (Though it would have been less so if they hadn’t replaced the “former Decepticon making good” role with Octane.)

Actually, Skyfire’s turn from Decepticon to Autobot predates the Blitzwing/Octane change by two years.

That doesn’t really feel like the same thing. Skyfire was tricked. He never really believed what the Decepticons believed. As Optimus Primal once said to Silverbolt when he compared himself to Dinobot, “You didn’t KNOW better!”

Ethan amuses me. His fan boy indignation mixing with his sense of injustice creates a nice bit of absurdity that makes me smile.

Actually I voted for Dinobot, despite having grown up watching G1 TF. Soundwave is awesome but Dinobot stole the show for me nearly every episode he was featured in during Beastwars. Code of Honor still gives me goose bumps.

Question! The voting site seems to allude that you can vote once a day until May 28th or so. Yet when I tried to vote again today, it said I could not. Anyone else noticed this?

I’m 23, and the things Jacob “grew up with” or is knowledgeable about are the same things as they were for me, while my 21 year old roommate considers them “before his time” and my 27 year old roommate thought of them as “kiddy crap” when they were popular (Power Rangers, Beast Wars, etc.).

It just struck me how silly the whole “hall of fame” for fictional characters that are all generated by the same IP company is when you really get down to it. It’s not like actual people advancing a field or artform. Fun though.
