It was brought to my attention yesterday that April 16 is the anniversary of Mike’s very first appearance in Roomies!, my first webcomic.
So, um, yay! Celebrate it by preordering the awesome Mike statue!

FIRST comment, hell yea, by the way poor amber
Wow. That is one traumatized lady!
I’m fairly sure that’s exactly what I looked like after seeing Mike smile yesterday…
Yay for April 16th anniversaries! *cough* *cough*
I’d give her a hug anyway, because hugs are a magic cure-all.
You know, except for cancer.
Do people hug in funky winkerbean?
Only if there’s the chance that it may be incestuous.
Holy crap epic accidental foreshadowing.
Yeah, Amber. I think we all have to agree with you on that.
Also: Someone has not had to work with Mike very much yet, have they?
Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! Roma-roma-maamaa! Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!
I can’t actually figure out which one of them is Gaga/the narrator but they are definitely in a bad romance. Poor amber, facing up to that fact!
PS, Willis, I am v. glad your blog is now hosted instead of being on livejournal! *waves pompoms of squee*
That first panel looks like Amber’s breaking the fourth wall. And *NOW* I’m creeped out…
– agent_of_the_8.
You said that and I scrolled back up… she is staring right at me o.o
Holy crap, she is… creepy.
But smiling Mike is still worse.
After seeing the comic with Mike smiling, you have 7 days before Amber crawls out of the computer screen and kills you.
You’ve doomed us all Willis.
Am I the only one that thinks that Mike is happy she punched him because she’s actually standing up to him, or..?
Well, we would need evidence that that is his ONLY smile. If it’s his only smile, then… y’know..he has to look creepy to express happiness.
I dunno. Yeah I guess I could buy that being part of it.
Well Mike smiled pretty creepy one time in one of Willis’s other strips. I think at best, I may have seen a non-creepy smirk. But I’m not positive.
This is, of course, only talking about Sober!Mike. Drunk!Mike is a tottally different story.
On that note, I wonder if Mike ever comes home still buzzed? It’d be fun to watch Amber try to figure which Mike she’s gonna be dealing with. Of course the rosy cheeks of goodness would be a dead give-away.
That would be a pretty messed up message, wouldn’t it? Standing up for yourself via spousal abuse? (do they have a special term for beating up your non-married boyfriend/girlfriend, or does it still just fall under “spousal?”)
I believe it’s just called domestic violence
Personally, I think Mike’s pleased she punched him because he’s manipulating her into emotional states that are attractive to him.
If you theorize that he is to a normal human being what a photo negative is to a photo, then naturally, he would find negative emotions far more attractive than positive ones.
I agree with you almost entirely. I don’t think he is the opposite of a person, but other than that we are in agreement.
He smiled sober on It’s Walky, at one point when Dinah hugged him cause she got in a fight with walky or something like that. He seemed really pleased in a selfish way XD
Pretty sure that’s because he knew he was going to get to take advantage of her to hurt Walky. The Dina thing is what keeps Mike from being my favorite character.
He’s technically got a clean slate in DoA, though!
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw….poor thing.
David! What have you done?! I saw no drama tag pulled this time! Next you’ll have to pull the S&M tag to top that.
I think if Amber had continued to stand up to Mike after punching him I would have thought it possitive and been on her side. He DID deserve it. But instead she folded immediately into a wreak and fell into classic abusive relationship appology rhetoric and it just made her seem weak and horrible and a lot more like her father than she probably wants to be.
The fact that Mike THEN gives her “The Smile” and says I love you must have hit her hard with 1)How horrible he is, 2)How horrible this relationship is, 3) How horrible SHE is.
No wonder the girl’s a wreck. Now the question is can she pull her self back to self-respecting humanity (not that she was really ever there) or does she continue to fall apart till there’s nothing left?
Should it bother me that the look on Amber’s face had me laughing more than the actual punchline?
Nope! Hell, it was a two-fer for me – Amber’s facial expression and the punchline both had me in stitches. Excellent! I am positively LOVING this and hope that things keep on getting worse for Amber!
A part of me is actually hoping Mike puts Amber in a mental institution by the time he’s done . . . and then visits her regularly to keep twisting the screws. Crap – I knew I hated Amber, but I didn’t realize I despised her this much . . .
WOW, you officially hate her worse than I do. What you want is pretty damn close to a fate worse than death. Me, I just want her to suffer enormously for a period equal to the smug blackmail that she committed (that being said, I certainly wouldn’t protest if your scenario happens).
I’d settle for her being written out of the comic entirely.
Is it really blackmail if Mike wants it, though(and yes, I am aware of the implications of that line)? By the New York trip, Amber was about to let him free, but then she found out that Mike was just going along with it to do something else. Initially it was bad, but after that, she knew she wasn’t actually doing anything he didn’t want.
Plus, if nothing else, Mike deserved it.
Good to know I’m not alone in my dislike for that character
Here’s the scene. Amber, finally so fed up she leaves everything behind, goes home to her mother. She walks in, blinded by tears, intending to bare her soul to Mommy and be comforted. But Mom’s naked in bed with Mike, and both are smoking cigarettes. Mike looks up at her and smiles just like he did after she punched him and says, “I told you I f**ked your Mom.”
This storyline delights me on multiple, inappropriate, levels.
Well…can anyone else remember Mike EVER smiling before? Even when issuing a nut-shot?
We’ve seen him smile several times . . . it’s just that he’s always been drunk at those times. o_O
When Dina hugged him in It’s Walky he was clearly struggling to suppress a smile, if that counts.
This punch line seems vaguely relevant to the current story line.
Good catch! This really informs what’s going on here – I think Mike might actually be somewhat sincere, in a truly effed-up way.
I think its great. Your work has really impressed me. I am only a recent reader but i had to spend my whole day off catching up to current. I must say I thought Mike and ethan would end up together though lol.
I am thinking that Amber doesn’t like the idea of Mike being really truly affectionate towards her and she would prefer him to stay violent and hateful? Amber, I am confused.
I really MUST be confused to speak directly to a fictional character like that…
You hear that crackling noise? It’s hell freezing over.
April 16 is also the 0th birthday of my daughter Matilda
Yet she doesn’t mention the argument that led to her punching him in the face that led to the smile (which she also forgot to say was creepy as hell) and the loving.
