Drew doesn’t know who Ace the Bat-Hound is?
He has relinquished his right to call himself a geek.
Now now — my Fiancee can name every episode of Stargate Atlantis and knows the back story for every minor character. She is very much a geek.
And she has no idea who Ace the Bathound is.
Not every geek is a comic book/superhero geek.
But he’s Ace and he wears a mask so no one knows he’s Bruce Wayne’s dog and bawwwwwwwwwwwww
In a perfect world, everyone would know who Ace the Bat-Hound is.
Yeah, but the last time I think he’s been depicted in that form (with the cape and cowl and all) was in the cold open of one episode of Brave and the Bold. Most people would only know Ace as Bruce Wayne’s black dog from Batman Beyond. They might not even remember his name from that. Poor Ace really gets the short end of the stick. Everyone knows Krypto, but no one knows Ace.
It’s a dog… wearing a Batman mask, and cape… with a bat-symbol on his collar. I REALLY don’t think it’s that hard to figure out who/what that is…
Krypto the Superdog ran for two seasons on Cartoon Network and still shows on Boomerang; Ace is one of the main characters- cape, cowl and all. He’s also in most issues of Tiny Titans.
…Your basic argument is correct, though: most people have never heard of Ace the Bat Hound at all. The joke with Drew is that he is of course not even in the same Universe as “geek”, he just hangs out with/was raised by people even more square than he is, so “he read some Fred Saberhagen and Fritz Leiber paperbacks in high school” counts as some kind of “geeky” in his mind.
TexasNinjaBuzzard – Trae Dorn is correct, there are all kinds of geeks in the world. Unless the only geeks approved by the Shortpacked community are comic book geeks, there will be legitimate geeks who don’t recognize any of these toys.
I’m pretty sure I count as a geek (write operating systems for a living, paid for programming since the mid ’70s, on the net for a long time before it was the internet, reading SF since the early 60′s, own thousands of SF books, watched TOS first run, am also a Britcom geek, an audio geek (vinyl!), a beer geek, and a comic _strip_ geek (active on RACS since the early ’90s), but I’ve never been into comic books, Transformers, etc., etc., etc. Does this last make me not a geek?
D00d, I know WWII reenactors and electrical engineers- I’m familiar with the breadth of the Autistic Geek Spectrum. I’m going by Drew’s own words, which indicate that he appears to think that Muppet posters and closeted board games qualify as “geek”. Unless he got that poster signed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson by virtue of leaping out from behind a stack of soup cans at the local grocery store and feverishly demanding autographs, he’s just sadly deluded. He will never understand the joy of laughing at a Michiyamenotehi Funana or understand why “Diecast technology… It’s a lost art.” is a great line.
Texas Ninja Buzzard – I don’t think he’s defining “geek” — he’s just pointing out that not every geek covers every surface of his/her home in geekly paraphernalia.
Which (calling up an old joke from a issue of Wizard) isn’t all that good of a disguise for a dog since they know each-other by sniffing – shouldn’t he be wearing the mask on his butt instead?
What kind of punchline would we have had if Ethan used Optimus Prime instead after his flip-flopping episode earlier? *chin scratch*
He could also just have more exposure to Marvel than DC. I grew up mainly reading the X titles and Spider-Man so while I remember Krypto from a few episodes of some DC cartoon or another, I never saw the Krypto show, I had no idea who Ace was until I looked him up.
Now that’s a thought considering Ethan’s previous reactions…what if Drew likes Marvel more than DC?
There aren’t many dogs -I- could identify a small plastic toy of from across the room, cape or no cape.
Heck, I don’t know who Ace the Bathound is, and I can quote entire Star Trek seasons, know the ins and outs of obscure RPG systems, quote tvtropes.org, ship the Little Mermaid/Aquaman, and have issues relating with people. I am Geek in pure form and I don’t know who Ace the Bat-Hound is.
You might not know the name of “Ace the Bathound” but I bet if you saw a dog wearing a Batman mask, you’d say “hey? Is that a batman-dog?” or something close. The fact Drew called it a “dog thing” is a sign of a bad geek.
You ship the Little Mermaid and Aquaman?
…My eyes have been opened.
They were clearly meant to be. Too bad they’re owned by different publishing companies…
DOG THING aight Drew I don’t like you anymore D=|
Agreed… DOG THING? Blödes Arschloch… >:(
Same. I can get being creeped out by Ethan’s room, I would be. I can get being worried that I’m dating someone that has that many toys. But calling it a Dog-Thing instead of at least ‘Bat-Dog’ or ‘Ace’ or something is simply being willfully insulting towards the Bathound, and that is something I cannot accept.
Well, at least he can ignore it. Here’s hoping Ethan can compromise for happiness.
Hooray for Drew not being unreasonable!
Drew’s arm looks kind of short.
Kind of noticed that, too… But at least it’s around Ethan’s shoulder again. Here’s to hoping they work through this bump in their relationship.
I kinda like how drew has the obligatory dreamy blue eyes, shaggy hair and perma 5 oclock shadow. He’s like the mid 00′s dream guy.
Glad you can see it our way, Willis.
Now, let’s keep it this way until you can come up with a reasonable explaination for why Drew can’t be Ethan’s butt-buddy.
Come on. Don’t be a snob.
That was actually supposed to sound sinister, but I guess it sounded more like “condescending douchbag” than “sinister villain”.
Maybe if I tented my fingers it would’ve worked. And an evil laugh probably would’ve sold it.
*tents fingers* Muahahahaha!!!
That good or does it need tweaking?
One of you 2 needs to get a Gravatar. This was confusing.
Alternatively, David needs to draw a few more random ones.
How bout both?
Which would make you more happy Ethan? A man on your arm, or a bat-hound on your tv?
…Don’t answer that.
A man on his arm who can appreciate the charm of a Bat-hound on the TV.
I repeat… Drew is a bad geek. He called Ace the Bat-Hound, a “dog thing.”
*Smacks Drew on the nose with a rolled-up issue of Detective Comics* Bad Geek! Very bad geek!
But why would you want to removes a dog with Batman’s mask? EVER!?
Because if you’re not used to it being immediately above the movie you’re watching it can be distracting.
I used to have a cowboy hat on top of my TV, so everyone on screen looked like a cowboy!
My tv has a fedora.
Everyone is either Linkara or Indiana Jones.
… Or a woman wearing a fedora…
sigh, Ethan is adorable…
i don’t suppose there is a real Ethan who likes Clinically depressed, mentally unstable guys with high IQ’s and a computer worth more than their car?
awww crap… a female image?
… how long until the avatars get reset? or any way i can change it?
I really hope you aren’t my husband’s super secret online identity, ’cause that would be awkward.
I’m not quite as geeky as ethan, but I have a moderately large transformers animated collection.
Where do you live?
This relationship is DOOOOOOOOOMED.
set up a gravatar… see if it works
These last few comics have been exceptional. This is so my life, except it’s my girlfriend instead of another guy who feels like Drew.
Ethan will convert Drew to the dark side of the Force…I can FEEL it!
Or maybe Drew will help Ethan be less of a terrifying manchild.
I’ve never heard of Ace the Bat-hound, and i watched the batman cartoons all the time as a kid. Never got into comics though… for many reasons. I just nod and smile when my friends start comparing comics to the cartoons. Honestly, I’m more of an rp gamer… this includes dice systems and video games. I collected my little ponies when I was a kid and I’m keeping that entire collection for my kids to play with (I played with toys. They were not for displaying)
I don’t think this makes me any less of a geek. And I’m not gonna hate on Drew because he doesn’t know that the dog is called Ace the Bathound. OF course, I would have called it the batdog… thing. Thing so would have still been in it.
I’m not so worried about Drew not being able to handle it anyway. It’s Ethan that is more likely to call it off.
Thanks! Thank you very much… I was reading the whole back archive of this comic for the last three weeks at work. It wasn’t until today I got to one regarding ‘Drift’ the Autobot. I googled him, found the often mentioned transformers wiki… and while looked at him started snickering a bit louder than I should at the captions for the images. One link to another and I wasted forty minutes on that wiki. Thanks… now I got in trouble at work for laughing at my screen *and* not doing work.
Keep it up!
Don’t go to tvtropes.
That’s it! Just dump him!
If I walked into a room like this, I’d be less claustrophobic and more worried that if I ever ended up living with the guy, over half our rent would be going towards plastic toys and batdog-things.
“Your nickname was never Ace. Maybe Ace-hole.” – Lister
Faint ray of hope? I sure hope so.
Fear the action figures, Drew. FEAR THEM!
They can be used as pointy death tools as well as distractions!
I know Ace from the Batman Beyond cartoons. And if I saw Ethan’s house, I don’t know if I’d be scared or impressed. I try to collect toys, and my collection impresses my friends in a “I can’t believe you collect toys but I’ll admit it looks pretty cool” way, but Ethan’s collection really is a bit overwhelming.
(And I want that Ace the Bathound toy. GIVE ME.)
This strip has more comments than I’ve seen so far going through the archives…. And most of them are about Ace the Bathound.
I knew he should’ve gone with Masterpiece Optimus Prime instead.
