I'm pretty sure Bruce did have a couple of brothers, very early on in the comics. Not sure what happened to them.

MORE SPOILER

He's *a* Thomas Wayne, but not Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father. He's a dude from like Puritan times who made a pact with the devil to live forever. Or something.

Friggin' Morrison.

Just to say it, since I'm sure that everyone who is going to has probably read it by now, these questions and many others were answered in the penultimate issue of Return of Bruce Wayne.... sort of.... kind of... maybe, a little? Actually it raised a lot more questions than it answered. The non-spolery current backstory about Batman's extended family is this; Thomas Wayne was an only child, and his parents died before Bruce was born (they were possibly murdered by a Bat-Demon Cult), Martha Wayne was also an only child, but parents were still around after Bruce's parents were killed but they were really old (like in their 80's and his grandfather was basically a vegetable on life support), there is some question as to why Alfred got custody of Bruce in his parents' will (Bruce apparently had, at the time his parents died anyway, several adult cousins who were willing to take him in) this ties into a meta-storyarc across the whole Morrison run where it is heavily implied that Martha Wayne and Alfred were screwing around and Alfred could be Bruce's real father (Alfred has denied this several times, but Bruce's grandmother said she thought this was probably true).

As for the paintings... Honestly, after the Magic Box o' Stuff in Wayne Manor's Secret Bat-Demon Summoning Chamber was introduced I stopped worrying about how little sense the paintings made.

I swear the painting thing makes sense in some Grant Morrison way, you may need to read return of bruce wayne a few times, but I swear it makes sense, I just can't explain it myself
