     Ruth was written into the stories in 1998, http://www.itswalky.com/d/19981002.html and intended from the start to die (i don’t think this would have won him any points had he drawn a character based on her). when he proposed to her he said that she asked him out in 2004 http://www.shortpacked.com/2008/comic/book-7/08-the-cartoonist-proposes/will-you-marry-me/ even if they’d known each other for a few years, i still don’t think basing the comic sacrifice off her would have enured her to him.
