So, Power Girl is ending. For me. I mean, it’s gonna keep goin’ on, just not with the current creative team. Lovebuddies Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are leaving, and after that who really cares? I haven’t even read to see who’s replacing them.
It’s too bad, because I hopped on really late. But today the trade of the first few arcs came out in comic shops, so I was able to finally catch up. It’s really been a great year or so of comics. I didn’t even really have a love for the character before now, but I do now – well, at least how she’s written here. Girls who think with their fists are pretty cool, and it’s refreshing that she’s not neutered, power-wise, in any way. Nobody has to rescue her constantly, nor does she pull any punches. It’s great.
And there’s a irreverent sense of humor throughout, which you can guess is right up my alley. It’s a world that doesn’t shy away from Golden Age-style goofy antics, which is even more awesome. Just because the characters roll their eyes at them doesn’t mean we get any fewer Pregno-Rays or Hilarious Overwrought Villain Speeches. Also, copious amounts of Ultra-Humanite.
And the art looks like it’s pureed Jesus. Or other deity of your choice. Or pureed baby-killing if you’re areligious.
And and and and.
The new Power Girl writer is Judd Winick…which, if you know anything about Judd Winick, is probably a good enough reason to jump ship as it is.

I was definitely disappointed by the book changing teams. Power Girl (and Booster Gold) were both enjoyable books with decent sales numbers and yet current fans are getting the shaft with these “new directions”. I was annoyed at the switch anyway, but to hear that Winick (and Giffen) were taking over those titles was an extra punch to the gut.
Eh, Giffen on Booster will probably be pretty fun.
I’m worn out when it comes to Giffen.
But’s it not that Giffen will be good or bad so much as they’re chucking the direction the book has been going.
Damn, just as I started reading Power Girl.
I keep telling myself that it won’t necessarily be bad. Maybe Power Girl is the comic that Winick was born to write! That’s possible, isn’t it?
But Paul Dini’s Zatanna series debuts next month, which cushions the blow.
The comic Judd Winick was born to write was Barry Ween and the sooner he admits that to himself and stops writing comics that aren’t that the happier everyone will be.
Exactly! Even when Winick signed my copy of the first Barry Ween collection at ComiCon eons ago, I sensed he had an odd disdain for his own best work. And maybe everyone else’s too. Damn Real World.
I didn’t think Winick’s last Batman run was all that bad…
Don’t worry little Willis. I’m sure Amanda Conner will draw something again eventually. Cute girls. Silly animals in the background. Fun fight scenes. The most fantastic facial expressions in comicbook history… This sucks! Man, I never really cared about Power Girl, or DC comics at all. But I adore Conner’s art. Wonderful art and Ultrahumanite are the reason Power Girl is the first ever DC comicbook I have ever bought. And come issue 12 it shall be the last. *sigh*

Crap, the PG team is breaking up? I really enjoyed the writing and art there. I like my overwrought, drama-laden DCU, but having a port of crazy fun here and there was really nice.

I’m going to give Winick the chance to surprise me. The new artist’s work looks pretty darn good, though.
Wait, what? You mean there’ll be no more Palmiotti/Connor goodness for Kara Zor-L? Okay, so I admittedly did quite enjoy Judd Winick’s Exiles run, but still, this can only be bad news.

Yeah, Winick is a big truckload of ass.
However, Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis are taking over Booster Gold! How anyone can NOT be happy with that is beyond me. The Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League is possibly my favorite comic book ever. I’m so very excited.
It means everybody’s going to be alternating between that scrunched-up expression with the protruding lips and that head-cocked-to-the-side eye-rolling expression with the mouth open all the time, but I can live with that.
Winick had a good run on Exiles I still enjoy reading, but I also am dropping this series after #12 when Conner leaves. These funnybooks are sespensive! How can I afford that third Shortpacked collection if I’m looking at cartoon boobies all day?
This blows. As far as I’m concerned, Power Girl was invented so Amanda Conner could draw her. We shall see if Winick can get over his massive case of Author On Board-itis. I kind of doubt it.

I never gave a flying three legged fuck about Power Girl in the past but Amanda Conner brought so much life to her that I have been buying it up as soon as my shop can get them, I even bought some Supergirl cause she’d done the art, she just has such an amazing gift when it comes to expression that I just love it to bits.
I’d take her art in a manly fashion, were I not happily wed.
I’d been considering reading the Power Girl stuff, the covers looked fun, after reading this post I went out and did it.
I just have to say, Vartox is totally Faz.
Vartox is my favorite character in all of DC comics. Other than Clock King. And Johnny Witts. And… well, he’s up there.
I’ve always like Vartox, just because he sort of looks like Freddie Mercury.
You probably already know this, Dave, but one of my favourite artists (okay, you probably didn’t know THAT haha) has a LOT of awesome artwork up on dA, and a lot of it is Powergirl stuff. And the rest is just so epically awesome I don’t even.
