Almost all of the character that appear in this comic have had little or no characterization in past media (and, in Overlord's case, had a completely different origin and motivation in the last major media he appeared in), so they aren't anchored down to past stories. While there are a lot of obscure references and mysterious backstory mentioned in this comic, most of it ends up being revealed as the comic progresses (good storytelling, hooray!). Despite it being a part of the IDW continuity as a whole, it is a mostly self-contained story with very enjoyable art and personality. It is Transformers love. I think you will.
