It was the time shenanigans- Spock was from the original Star Trek timeline, but then Nero changed it, and so the movie was an alt timeline with one character who was from the original timeline. Strictly speaking, it was the last sequel.

I could go into a long and drawn out explanation of how it does in fact tie in with the rest of the franchise, but I don't feel like it. Suffice it to say: don't think of it as a prequel, think of it as a time-traveling sequel.

Plinkett put it best: JJ Abrahms should have directed the Star Wars prequels. George Lucas should have directed people to their seats in the theater.

Meh, I liked the new Star Trek movie because it did actually make sense in an alternate reality kinda way. At least they even said that in the movie so they aren't actually trying to trick us by saying it all ties in with the other movies/series. As a movie in itself, it was awesome.

I was, however, disappointed it didn't tie in with the other movies and/or the series. I really would have loved an actual prequel to the original series.

But, I'd never compare it to Star Wars. At least with this ST:2009 I could follow the whole thing. I have yet to make it completely through a Star Wars movie without falling asleep. Even when I went to the theatre to see Episode 2, I nodded off. And I never fall asleep in movie theatres.

I don't remember the ad but once I saw the new Trek film, I began to (and will forever) refer to it as the latest "Star Wars" sequel.

I remember that ad. It hurt my brain, a lot.

But then after I came out of the theater my first thought was "that was everything I wanted Phantom Menace to be." And then the question of generations got confused in my head.
