Because their actors are so very concerned about being typecast, they can get written out mid-season without the batting of an eye. You sit there and say, "No way." "The can't kill him. He's like THE MAIN CHARACTER." And then they kill off the main character. Of course, because you liked the main character and didn't want to see him die, you are now pissed and don't want to watch anymore, but at least it's not predictable :D As a follow up, I want to say that that is why I like a lot of UK TV shows.
