I read the actual comics back in 1993. Bane broke Batman's back. Dick Grayson became Batman for about five minutes before being replaced by my least-favorite Batman-related character after Hush, Azrael.
Azrael modified the costume to include clunky armor and claws and went around killing people, basically to shut up all the Wolverine/Punisher fanboys who were saying Batman was a pussy because he wouldn't kill people.
After everyone got a taste of what a horrible idea a murderous psycho Batman was, Bruce Wayne's broken back was miraclulously healed by a bi-racial pair of siblings who had some kind of weird-ass binary healing ability, after which one was killed and the other went into a persistent vegitative state. Which solved the twin problems of "Why doesn't Bruce have these two fix Barbara's spine?" and "What do we do with this woman who loves Bruce Wayne and also knows he's Batman, but who is neither Talia al Ghul nor Selina Kyle?"
Bruce then went back to Gotham and basically mindfucked Azrael out of the bat suit and resumed the role himself, redesigning the suit so it was all-black (but still included all the old pieces, so a lot of colorists kept making the accessories blue anyway).

You're probably referring to the the audiobook version of the series Knightfall which introduced Bane(iirc) and in their first meeting Bane a. Figured out his secret identity, and b. Broke his spine. Bruce actually handed over the mantle of Batman to Jean Paul Valley until he recovered and then had to fight Valley for the title of Batman again. Jean Paul Valley had already wiped the floor with Bane before that.

He once broke Batman's spine in an audio book I listened too once as a kid. But then Batman de-paralyzed himself somehow and did something clever with his steroid tubing.
