I remember this scene! 8D And I didn’t even watch the whole thing! Ray would kill me for saying this, but I’m not sure I see the appeal in that anime. I’ve never been one for mechas.
The original scene was all heartwarming and stuff. Then later it’s all HA HA ACTUALLY WE HAVE LIKE FIFTY REIS IN A JAR. DOCTOR VENTURE GAVE US THE IDEA.
That series was insane .. well, it didn’t hurt having the writer being insane at the time. At the time it was something new, mecha that you were not sure were mecha, adolescence, weird science, Illuminati, teenage angst, madness, love hate relationships, etc etc. It was one of those series that had each of the Anime nerd factions gasping for the next episode, fangirls included … well until that last episode where everyone just sat there in that darkened convention room in wide eyes shock and confusion.
The ending to the movies was indeed probably a more accurate description to how it did happen. Perhpas, it was in their heads that we saw the first time around, a happier, if more boring place, to the physical realities fucked up state. I mean, Rei and Kaoru and all of earth in one physical being? Being able to feel and hear EVERYONE that exists? Gneee.
To this day, it is one of the most fucked up animes I’ve seen (I couldn’t even finish Paranoia Agent, tho, so I dunno, Lain comes close). I’m building, starting low on the “THIS ANIME IS TOTALLY FUCKED UP” scale, so that one day, my wife might be able to try and watch that anime with me, and debate WHAT THE HELL GENDO SAID IN THE END!
I watched evangelion… it was brilliant until that weird, even by its standards, ending.
paranoia agent is just crap, I had to give up for my sanity after I decked my room mate when he accidentally quoted something from it, although, to be fair to him he understood once he’d watched some of it and nearly had the same reaction. Serial Experiments Lain im starting after exams finish but ive heard its good
I cannot make my friends finish this series. They all say Shinji is too emo.
I actually enjoyed it, and it introduced me into the world of more dense anime. Anyways, most of Gainax seems weird, but I don’t remember other anime in which everyone was turned into Tang…
See, Shinji gets criticised a lot, but I think most people would probably react to that kind of situation the same way: by either running and screaming or curling up in a ball and sobbing quietly. I know I would.
I think the problem people have with it is that while it’s realistic, it’s not very fun to watch. Obviously tastes vary, whatever floats your boat, etc cause I like watching fictional characters suffer.
No, I’ve watched FLCL a bunch of times (and own the DVDs, in fact) and it’s tons of fun.
Now, Excel Saga, on the other hand…I watched two episodes at Balticon a few years back (subbed, because apparently you’re not a real fan if you prefer dubs, no matter what Shinichiro Watanabe says about the Cowboy Bebop dub being better than the Japanese version) and came out of the room thinking I’d hurt my brain.
I kinda love how all the comments here are nostalgic about how cool Eva was back in the day, and yet nobody noticed the comic was actually about the new(-ish) movie series reboot of the franchise. As a note to anyone who hasn’t seen it, Rebuild of Evangelion is made of pure win (especially the opening of the second movie with Unit 5 and its crazy drill arm).
How it should have happened.
Roadblock can never be wrong.

Pretty accurate to just how creepy that was.
The original scene was all heartwarming and stuff. Then later it’s all HA HA ACTUALLY WE HAVE LIKE FIFTY REIS IN A JAR. DOCTOR VENTURE GAVE US THE IDEA.
It’s not like Evangelion predated that show by 8 years, or anything. I agree. Totally plagiarized.
I think he was saying that the later version corrupted his fond memories of the original, not that there was any plagarism going on.
But what do I know? I haven’t watched either of the things you two are talking about.

My guess:
Your Mom
Yeah that is terrifying
((Never seen the series, sorry))

Obligatory Evangelion reference quota reached, please continue.
Of course you’re sporting the perfect avatar for this statement. (^_^)
Awkward smile is awkward.
Asuka’s a fucking tease.
Shinji wants to fuck his mom.
Let’s move on.

It’s like that saying I’ve heard: Everyone wants to be Superman. Everyone is Peter Parker.
That’s not a smile or even a grin, that’s the ‘I got goosed by Freddy Kruger” face.
I am intrigued by how you would know that kind of face.
Umm… FLCL!!!
No, I’ve watched FLCL a bunch of times (and own the DVDs, in fact) and it’s tons of fun.

I once marathoned Excel Saga, that didn’t hurt my brain as much as Nerima Daikon Brothers and Ninja Nonsense in the space of 24 hours
Ugh FLCL sucks ‘cept for the Steamer
anyway the correct response to this is to help her tone that down a bit

by the timing it could be the movie, but the scene plays the same in both
sorry space about the comics tittle, new movie it is
Maybe it’s just me, but this kinda also reminds me of one of the first Shortpacked! strips:

Rein and Amber were kind of alike back then.
Anyone here ever read the fanfic NGE Nobody Dies?
Takes a whole new look on the characters. And I mean like… oops!
