True, but sadly, I would rather be with Windows 7 than anything Mac these days. Especially the imac. I have Ubuntu as a second operating system on my machine, so I’ve got the best of both worlds.
No macs for you? Try this on for size. My personal computer is an iBook. PowerPc. Not intel, so I can’t run much. Hell, Firefox takes up 50% of my ram (256mb). Luckily, plenty of room on my hard drive (20gb).
No joke. Ubuntu IS awesome. So long as you want to do cool techy stuff instead of play mainstream games.
But Linux isn’t exactly user friendly. I’m 2/3 of the way into a computer science degree, with 2 1/2 years of deskside support on my resume, and i *still* have a lot of trouble with Linux.
In the Tron Legacy movie by Disney, when they’re talking about their latest release which will (and I paraphrase) bring about world peace and harmony and stuff, the camera is on the company higher-ups talking about it, with a big monitor displaying the system. On the screen? Ubuntu. I shit you not.
I’ve actually never had any of the problems I had with previous Windows versions with Windows 7. Of course, that doesn’t mean OTHER people haven’t, and I haven’t given enough of a damn to check.
I think the bad reputation of Windows is largely undeserved. Almost ten times as many people use Windows as Macs; ten times more users means ten times greater likelihood of errors surfacing. So even if Windows had, say, half as many flaws as OSX, it would still screw up far, far more often, and thus gain a reputation for screwing up. Some errors can only be triggered by very specific chains of events, which are less likely to occur the fewer users there are; thus, Macs may very well have a lot of errors which will never be found.
Among my circle of friends, most people own Macs. They’ve had their fair share of fatal system errors and other screwups. I have to wonder how the reputation of Macs would change in a market that was split 50/50 between the big two operating systems.
The reputation for windows is deserved, although it may or may not be fair to apply all of those issues to the current version. Back in the day, windows was quite horrible – but people got used to rebooting twice or more times a day and saved a lot more often. They seem to get the occasional version more or less right (WFWG, 98SE, 2000, XP), but Vista really damaged their reputation again.
Really, they both are the same thing with different (metaphorical) colors, but most of the argument about them is largely based on stupid people saying stupid things. So.
I think every other windows version is okay. I started with WFWG. Was good. W95? Not so much. 98SE? Improved 95! 2000 wasn’t made for games as it was pretty much the new NT! And ME was so much fail that I got rid of it and reinstalled 98SE. Used it until XP got SP2 and reinstalled it so much that the serial is still stuck in my head. Then used XPSP2 for years. Tried Vista when it came out and it was just as much of a failure as ME. W7 is the improved Vista and it is good. I think I’m skipping W8 and wait for W9 or whatever it’ll be called as it’ll be the improved W8!
I have a desktop setup with Windows Vista (it was a GIFT okay?) and bought a laptop with Windows 7. I get more crap from my machine with Vista than I do from my laptop. It’s a much better improvement over vista, believe you and me.
I’d own a mac, ‘cept the one I want would cost as much as a basic package corvette.
Here’s my philosophy. Mac users and PC users are like Republicans and Democrats. They think they’re total opposites of each other, but to impartial third parties, they’re practically the same.
Now excuse me while I duck and cover for the nuclear bunker while I wait for 99.7% of Americans (PC users, Mac Users, Democrats, and/or Republicans) to find out where I live and hunt me down.
My deciding factor: cost.
For the cost of getting a mac, I could get a dell with equal specs, a really good anti-virus software to null the difference between the two, and still have a bit left over for games. Apple makes wonderful things, but as soon as Jobs is gone, a lot of their creative spark will go too, but they’ll still think they offer superior services and items. Apple will still charge more until they realize that they’ve fallen behind, and then it will almost be too late to recover.
It’s happened before, and it’d be stupid to say it won’t happen again.
Just wanted to note that Jobs is indeed now gone, so we’re going to totally be seeing if you turned out to be right… I’ve got a gut feeling you really are.
Don’t look at me, Windows XP user here. I like to master one tool and use it until it becomes totally unusable, in the process becoming a total expert on its capabilities. I suck at any other Windows usage, but I can fix almost any XP problem that emerges.
you had to start the religious wars? lol, i believe all computers suck! we do far too much accommodating to their needs for the amount of return we get.
What gets me is that Apple/Mac has always tried to market itself as products for the true individualist. You know, the hip young rebel instead of the corporate tool in a business suit. But their software is so fucking proprietary that at this point if you want to really individualise, build your own programs, they are the WORST to use.
(And not just because of their track record for removing your program from their single, official marketplace and then selling their own version without paying you anything.)
Vista worked perfectly on my computer… never a problem, no slowdowns, no nothing. W7 is still better though. It’s user experience is polished compared to Vista. But technically, no problems. Guess I lucked out.
Not that it matters. Ubuntu kicks both their asses.

Finally someone besides me that thinks Ubuntu is AWESOME.

I’m a windows user, but I still enjoy some of the mac/pc/linux commercial spoofs.

Actually, I think it might have been an Ubuntu script that appeared for a bit, not the actual OS layout, which was changed around a bit. Still Ubuntu.

Also: John Hodgeman is awesome.

Improving on Vista isn’t exactly a feat.
My windows XP has never failed me, but yeah macs just suck
I’ve never got the BSOD until after installing win7. I don’t know what to think..
i love how out of all the comics david has ever done, few, if any other comics have had this much discussion on them.
never underestimate the power of nerd brand elitism.
I want a team-up with Friggin’ John Hodgman and Jane Freaking Goodall.
That would rock.
Personally, I’m getting the MacBook Wheel:

john hodgman is a mac user.
A Mac is a PC too, this is a conversation between two PC’s. They must both suck.

I lol’d, then lol’d harder at the comments. I run Ubuntu on a Device Label Ravage as my emergency OS. xD
I’m a windows user.
I hate Macs (the tech is good, but I hate Apple as a company)
I hate Win 7
WINDOWS XP FOREVER!
Ha ha, they’re gonna stop supporting your baby in 2014, sucker. Upgrade or die.
you had to start the religious wars? lol, i believe all computers suck! we do far too much accommodating to their needs for the amount of return we get.
You believe all computers suck.
You typed this belief on a computer.
I’d make fun of you but really, what’s the point? I doubt you’d understand any of it.
Woohoo John Hodgeman! I got my copies of his books signed, he did it with the hobo sign for it-is-time-for-the-hobos-to-rise-up-and-take-over-America.
