I saw Star Trek the weekend it came out. It was awesome. Prolly explains why I hated Transformers so much; I was let down with expectations of more action-y scenes not involving a character named Witwicky.
I saw Star Trek the night it came out, and a week after it came out… and right before they took it out of theaters… Then when the DVD camoe out I watched that 20 times… in 17 days…
I have to disagree with Leslie here. Setting the flick in an alternate universe was the best thing they could’ve done. Sure, they’re shelving the old continuity for a while, but it’s still going to be around in extended universe products and it’s not like there was going to be another Trek series anytime soon anyway.
On the other hand, if they had set it in the mainline universe, either there would’ve been 10,000x more complaining because things got changed or the writers would’ve been horribly stifled.
I liked the new Trek movie, and it actually made me want to go back and take a closer look at the series, which I hadn’t been an uber-fanboy about before. (I’m still not an uber-fanboy about it, at least not on the level I am about, say, ’70s sitcoms or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or MST3K or the works of Bryan Fuller, but I do enjoy it immensely.)
What I object about, aside from the godsdamned lack of military anything (I have yet to meet a Trekker whose a veteran who doesn’t want to smack whichever writer made “not even a graduated cadet/ensign” a fugging captain), is the complete lack of Trek feel- no exploration, no peace is king, no understanding- whoot, let’s blow shit up!
Fun movie, but without the basis of the show/verse, it felt much more like an action movie with a Star Trek skin. (Hoping the second can be as awesome, with some actual Trek feel in it)
I look at it this way–the Trek movie wasn’t about the essence of the Federation and what it does, what kind of feel it creates. It was about Kirk and Spock, and how they grow as people. To have them develop in the way they did, there needs to be a larger threat, an obstacle to overcome big enough to get Kirk to come into his own and Spock to put aside his usual BS. Mere exploration and peacekeeping isn’t good for that sort of thing. It’s about getting the characters to the point where those are reasonable goals for them.
In short, if the Federation was the focus, it’d be more of an issue, but it’s not.
(Also, isn’t Captain a high rank in the Navy? Which the Fed is based on? Remember hearing that somewhere.)
saw thevmovie on dvd, threw dvd away, threw dvd player away.had to pay library for dvd and buy buddy abnew dvd player. It was worth.it though, cux starbtrek sucked so bad.
Thank you Ethan for pointing out reboots are common. Reboots like Battlestar Galactica, Godzilla, Batman, Mortal Kombat, Ninja Turtles, Planet of the Apes 2011, and Dumbing of Age are awesome.
So how did Robin not know that Transformers has a million different continuities but she knew enough about Maid Airazor vs. G1 Megs?
Ethan rants constantly. It seems very plausible to me that Robin would pick up a few details, but not necessarily listen enough to have a real understanding of the franchise.
What the hell is wrong with the reboot?
There was that massive time travel plot, which the entire film revolved around, JUST to fit it into the continuity.
They could easily have made it a complete reboot, that isn’t tied into any prior fiction, but then they would have pissed off a LOT more people.
But I guess Leslie didn’t know that, did she?

Not to mention action-y scenes that you can actually interpret.
Yeah, imagine they killed off Uluru in a blink-or-miss it scene and no one says anything.
Uluru played by Aya Rock in the reboot?
Airazor in the Japaese dub.
Airazor being dubbed male wouldn’t bother Ethan.
I appreciate the continued presence of Rock Band in their house.

Timeline, not universe {/geek off}

There appears to be an unusually plump tush in that last panel, chap.
My thoughts, exactly.

So, no one is going to comment on the sweet ass on the last panel? This must be my destiny.
… Only if your density… er… destiny… was to be three months late!
