   See, to me this strip doesn’t seem to say ‘abusive’ to me. It’s more like… “Southern U.S. Step-dad.”

     What he’s doing to her is emotional abuse – he’s deliberately trying to undermine any scrap of self esteem she might have, for little or no (or crappy) reason. Just basically going out of his way to make her feel like shit.

     A later strip does reveal he once hit her, too. I’m guessing that event happened before this one, chronologically speaking.
