Mike would much rather gloat over someone's suffering than simply kill them. From the second cell of the comic, I think it can be assumed that Mike did all of that just to make Ethan spill his bowl of something. In Mike's dream, I think Ethan is just so upset that he spilled his bowl's contents (and probably hurting quite a lot, too) that he just lies, amidst the burning wreckage, mourning his overturned bowl.
